Nihao!
Actually, it's now called Journal of the Ages: Ranma, but I wanted to make sure that people knew what I was writing about. (Sigh) You put tons of work into a fic and you get a few people saying it's good, you come up with something out of the blue, not even sure what you want to do with it, and everyone tells you to finish it or else. (Sorry, mini-rant) Thanks to everyone who did tell me to work on this, I hope it was worth waiting for, of course, this is just the first chapter. C&C of course is always welcomed.

Journal of the Ages: Ranma
Chapter 1
The world remained the same, the same sunset, smells and sounds, but there was a different cast to it than it had ever had before. Ranma leaned back against the roof of the Tendo Dojo, his thoughts racing. He sat, considering the events that had happened in his life. The trip to Jusenkyo, the girls and guys chasing him, everything. He thought about how it could all be something that was meant to be, even his feelings for Akane; he came to one conclusion.
No way, he said out loud, Forget it, there just aint no way that any of its true.
The letter lay in a crumpled ball next to him; Ranma had crushed it after reading it. He snorted, Always been a Ranma, its too corny.
Still who ever wrote the letter knew what had happened to him. 'Was there any way to check?' Ranma wondered.
I guess I could ask Nabiki, he said, then he shuttered at the thought of just what that information would cost him. No, he was on his own for this one. What to do, what to do? he mused.
He picked up the book again, his mother had said that they hadnt been able to open the book for years, it opened at his touch, easily, like a book should. It was a Western style book, reading from left to right. Ranmas eyes fell to the first page, he started to swear, the book was in English.
I guess I should have paid more attention to Hinako-sensei, he muttered. He thought about taking the book to Akane, since she was pretty good at reading English. However, he didn't. For some reason he didnt, for some reason he really didnt want anyone else to know about this until he was done. It looked like he would have to go do some research to read it, a fate worse than Akanes cooking.
Ah man! he said again. The book tingled in his hands, the same tingle Ranma felt every time his curse was activated. The words squirmed on the page, reforming into Kana.
Greetings Saotome Ranma,
I look at your life with wonder, of all of us; your life is one of the most interesting and intriguing. Many of us have lived dull lives compared to what you have gone, and have yet to go through. Even from this far back I can feel your anger, your skill, and your worry. The anger comes from not being in control, the skill, well we were all the best in whatever it was we did, and your worry comes from not wanting anything to hurt those you care for, even those you call your enemies. In this book you will find the stories of all who have gone on before you, perhaps it will answer your questions, like the one you will ask now, why me?
The letter you got explained some things, but not all. I know that the one question on your mind is just who I am, and how did the book switch from English to Japanese. I can answer some of the questions, the book can answer most of them, but only you can answer all of them. Dont scowl at me boy, I am not thy father, wisdom comes to us all, but Im beginning to wonder about him. By the way, your desire to know, a desire that rivals your ability at the art comes from me. But thats not too surprising, considering who I am. Well then, let us start as all things are started, at the beginning.
The book glowed, the letters reaching off of the page, with a cry, Ranma tried to drop the book, tried to do anything, but he was unable to move. A voice sounded within the vault of his mind.
Dont worry boy, consider this your own personal movie. You dont even have to borrow money from Nabiki to see it. The voice laughed with glee at its statement.
Just great, Ranma muttered, A mysterious voice with a sense of humor.
The voice just laughed harder.
The first life:
The babe came into the world as all babes do, complaining about it.
Got a good set of lungs he has MiLady, the midwife said.
The woman who had struggled to bring him into the world smiled a weary smile, Yes he does doesnt he?
And what shall he be called MiLady?
That is for his father to decide, the gentlewoman reminded her.
Of course MiLady, but it might be a while before the Lord is able to do so, the midwife said with some glee.
The lady looked over to where the Lord of the manner was currently passed out on the floor, Oh my! she exclaimed. She thought about it for a few seconds, I think Ranma will do, she said at last.
Ranma MiLady? What does it mean?
It is from a foreign tongue, it means wild horse, the lady explained.
The midwife listened to the babe for a second, It fits him MiLady, it fits him.
Then Ranma it shall be.
Later:
YOUVE WHAT?!!!!!!!!!
Ranma, that is no way to talk to your father, his mother chided him gently.
But what about my studies? I have no time for this. Ranma declared.
His father scowled at him, Boy, you will obey me in this. You can continue your studies there. Im told that Lord Kevin has a fine library and his mage is a good one.
But, but, I Im so close, I can feel it father, Ranma protested.
The old lord snorted, Son, you are perhaps the strongest mage that anyone has seen in a long time. But, you do still serve your family. You will therefore travel to Lord Kevins manor and marry his daughter Akane.
Ranmas shoulders slumped, As my father commands, he said half-heartedly.
His mother smiled at him. Ranma was the only child that the two had been able to have. He was about as stubborn as a bull and had the manners of one as well. Only one thing saved him. As his father had said, Ranma was the strongest mage that anyone had seen. The magic flowed through him as water flowed in a river. What some mages took days to do he did with barely a nod of his head. It seemed sometimes to her that she could even see the magic as it coursed through her sons body, lighting him up with a faint aura. She was glad that the Romans had stopped at the wall. It was said that others like Ranma had been taken from their families and given to the Church. They were never seen again.
Ranma, look at it as a training challenge, she said.
Huh?
The Lady sighed, her son was intelligent than most and wiser by far than his father was, but sometimes he seemed a little slow on the uptake. You will be traveling across the country, surely there would be something for you to use your skills on, she said.
Ranma nodded slowly, considering the idea.
Not only that, his father said, But I had heard that Akane was herself a mage of some standing. You would be wise to consider the benefits of such a union.
Ranma sighed, It shall be as you say. He looked wryly at his mother, I might indeed be a stubborn as a bull mother, but even I see the advantage to this.
The Lady paled a bit, I thought that thought reading was something that took days to make the bond.
Ranma shrugged, I just seem to have this knack for it.
His father grinned at him, Thats my boy!
The rest of the family just groaned.
Ranma approached the castle of Lord Kevin with some care. The Lord was said to employ a few warriors that rivaled what the High King himself had. He expected no trouble, but it made no harm to be ready.
A split second of warning was all that was given to him. But a split second was all that he needed to throw up his shield and ground him self before the lightning hit. It crawled along his barrier trying to find a way in. Ranma grinned; he had been deflecting bolts like this when he was but a lad.
And where do you think you are going commoner? the voice came from behind him.
He spun, behind him stood someone wrapped in a dark cloak.
Commoner? Ranma said, his voice low and dangerous, I am no commoner.
The cloaked person laughed, And I say you are! My word is law here.
Ranma sent a few probes out, carefully, as not to alert the mage in front of him. He was surprised. This was a master level mage, powerful certainly, but not the adept level he was. A bit more probing reveled that the mage in front of him was also a girl. He relaxed a bit; this could be fun.
And I say, you are an uncute tomboy, he said with some spite.
The girl tossed back the hood of her cloak, her eyes flashed fire, And how did you know that I am a woman knave? she demanded.
Hmmm, I might want to take back that uncute part, Ranma thought then spoke, Oh its just a little knack I have.
The girl smiled like a cat with a canary, Then let us try this knack, she said and launched fire at him.
Ranma just brushed it from the air. He frowned just a bit, Doesnt she know that she has no hope of winning? he thought.
The girl stood there, Well? she asked, Arent you going to strike back?
Ranma shrugged, Why should I?
The girl ground her teeth together and sent a blast of cold. Ranma again just deflected it without even thinking about it. This seemed to make her angrier. The attacks started to come faster and faster with more power behind them.
Man, shes really going all out, Ranma thought. He had some respect for her, some of the blows on a lesser mage would have fried the mage. Ranma didnt even feel the effects through his shields.
With a scream of rage, the girl sent a huge power bolt at him. Ranma whistled, that had some power in it. It might have actually gotten through his shields if Ranma hadnt dispelled it with a gesture.
The girl stood there glaring at him, daring him to do something. He judged the bolt carefully, and sent it off. Has he had hopped, it completely destroyed her shields and there was just enough power left to dump her on the muddy ground. She made a squishy sound when she landed.
Whats going on here? Whats the fuss? an older voice said.
Ranma turned to face a middle aged man, his hair and beard streaked with white, charging up to him with 50 mounted warriors. Ranma searched for the right word, ah yes, that was it, knights. This must be Lord Kevin then.
Lord Kevin, he said bowing slightly, I was just being entertained by your mage.
Lord Kevin frowned slightly, Mage? My mage is in the keep. He looked to where the mud-splattered girl was rising. Akane, he sighed.
Thats Akane? Ranma asked incredulously.
Looking pained, Lord Kevin nodded, Yes, she is my daughter.
Ranma went over and held out a hand, Im Ranma, son of Lord Richard of Merlin, sorry bout that.
************************************************************************
'History,' Ranma thought to himself, 'Has a way of repeating.' He grimaced and plugged his ears as Akane's shout bounced off the rafters of Lord Kevin's keep.
"YOU'VE DONE WHAT?!!" she screamed.
'She doesn't need magic,' Ranma thought, 'All she has to do is just scream at a person.'
Akane whirled, her eyes flashing fire. She picked Ranma up by the front of his shirt. "And just what did you mean by that?" she demanded.
Ranma blinked a few times, "How? How did you know my thoughts? I didn't feel any magic and you shouldn't have been able to get through my shield."
Lord Kevin sighed, "Akane seems to be a thought senser as well as a mage. It makes life around here interesting."
Akane looked back at him, "Daaaaad!" she said warningly.
Lord Kevin paled a bit.
Ranma thought something at Akane who blushed bright red. He grinned, "So that's how you do it," he said.
Akane dropped Ranma in shock, "I can't read you anymore, there's no way you could be blocking me."
"As I said, I seem to have a knack," Ranma said.
If looks could kill, Ranma would have been a pincushion as Akane glared daggers at him.
Before another costly fight could get underway (They were after all in the keep) Lord Kevin banged his cup down on the table. The two mages looked at him.
"Now then, in agreement with your father, Ranma, you are to be engaged to my daughter Akane. The wedding will take place one month from now," he declared formally.
"What?!! I don't want to marry this pervert," Akane screamed, Lord Kevin winced.
"Now just who are you calling a pervert?" Ranma demanded, as angry as Akane.
"Well you," she stopped and blushed again, "You, that thought."
Ranma caught on, "Oh THAT thought, don't worry, I would never do that with an uncute, unsexy, tomboy like you."
Akane transitioned from the red of embarrassment to the red of anger, "Why you.. you..," her magical powers flared to life, and she glowed a bright blue. "R-R-Ranma YOU JERK!!!"
Ranma felt the spell being cast; his own shields came to life. He watched in shock then as the heavy blunt object that Akane had summoned went through his shields like they weren't even there. It continued and Ranma was able to make out that it was a heavy mallet before it smashed into his face.
With a final yell of "Pervert!" Akane dispelled her mallet and stormed off. Lord Kevin looked at the twitching form of Ranma. "I should have warned about that, but then, you did have that coming."
"She is just so uncute," Ranma complained before passing out.
A month had past and things had not gotten any better. Lord Kevin had to keep the two separated to keep them from blowing holes in his walls. The last blow up had come when Akane had tried to cook Ranma a meal.
"I think the pig slop would taste better than this," Ranma had said. The fight blew the roof off of the great hall of the keep. The left over meal had been given to the pigs; they refused to eat it.
************************************************************************
"Lord Ranma!" the page yelled.
Ranma looked up from the book he was reading. There was some fascinating information in it. Now if he could just figure out how he had created it and sent it not only back, but also forward in time as well.
"Lord Ranma! I have been sent to inform you that the Lord of Merlin and his lady have entered the keep," the page said, "Your lady mother requests a word with you."
"And of course it is most unwise to keep one's mother waiting right?" Ranma finished for the startled page who had been thinking exactly that. He grinned, "Don't worry, I happen to agree with you. I have a feeling that no matter how powerful I'll get, my mother will still be able to bend me to her will."
"I am glad to hear of that my son," came a voice from the doorway.
Ranma rose and bowed to her, "Mother, how was your journey?"
"Fair, the summer has been mild this year. Your father is already excited at the idea of a full harvest."
Ranma laughed, "That's because he manages to eat most of it."
The lady gave Ranma a disapproving frown, but a fleeting glimpse of a grin let Ranma know that his mother agreed with him. Then her face grew stern, "Now stop trying to change the topic Ranma. I know you know why I am here."
Ranma sighed ruefully, "See what I mean?" he said to the page who was trying to fade into the woodwork.
The lady turned to the page, "Please bring the Lady Akane," she said.
"Yes mi'Lady," the page said, bowed, and then left.
The lady sat in the chair that Ranma had vacated, composing her dress as she began, "Now Ranma, what is this I hear of you and Lady Akane not getting along?"
"It's not like I start any of the fights," Ranma protested, "I just say something and then she blows up."
The lady allowed herself a small smile, "Yes, I had heard of the last fight, the one that removed the roof off of the great hall."
Ranma had the grace to look sheepish. "She's always over reacting to every little thing I say," he went on, "I think father needs to think about finding another way to unite out lands."
"Ranma, your father and Lord Kevin are old friends, right now we can find them drinking ale, playing chess, and talking of old wars and even older times."
In the great hall of the keep, the lords Kevin and Richard both sneezed while drinking ale, playing chess, and reminding each other on how great that one serving wench was in some forgotten inn.
The lady continued, "This marriage was a promise that they both made to each other, there is no chance that either one would let stubborn offspring stand in their way."
Ranma sighed, "Then I'm stuck with her?"
The lady nodded.
"And just who wants to be stuck with a pervert like you anyway Ranma?" a new voice challenged him.
Ranma just rolled his eyes, "Mother, this is the Lady Akane," he said introducing the angry person in the doorway.
Akane curtseyed to the lady, but her angry eyes never left Ranma.
The lady sighed; she had her work cut out for her. This one was even more stubborn than her son was.
"I am not!" Akane yelled.
"I should have warned you mother, Akane can read thoughts, it's a form of mind magic, not mage craft," Ranma said.
The lady grew a little red, "Am I the only one who cannot read the thoughts of others?" she demanded exasperated. "You," she said pointing at Ranma, "Out! Go find your father and tell him I want to speak with him and Lord Kevin when I am done. You," she said pointing to Akane, "Sit!"
"But!" Ranma and Akane said together.
"No buts," said the lady with steel in her voice, "Move!"
They moved.
It had been two weeks after the arrival of Ranma's parents; the guests had all arrived, including the High King himself.
Ranma lay back on his bed, it was well after midnight and he had given up on sleep. The bedclothes were twisted and the sheets soaked with sweat.
'Tomorrow,' Ranma thought, 'Tomorrow is when I take Akane to wife.' He still wasn't sure just how he felt about this. He definitely didn't know about how Akane felt about this.
Akane had emerged from that first talk with his mother furious. She had gone out and the hills surrounding the keep still bore the scars of her anger. That had gone on for a week. Then the pattern started to change. One day Ranma had seen Akane leaving his mother's room with a strange look in her eyes. His mother wouldn't talk about it and the look in HER eyes suggested that Ranma would be wise not to try and read her thoughts.
Yesterday, Akane had emerged from the room blushing. She looked rather cute when she did that Ranma decided. His mother had called him into her room and told him point blank that the wedding would go on as planned.
That night Akane sat next to Ranma and, well, Ranma was still confused over it. She just looked at him. That's all she did the entire night.
Ranma swore and got himself a glass of water. He sat down on the bed and started talking to himself.
"Ok, let's just think about this and try to make sense of it. She's a violent tomboy, who can read thoughts, is stronger than a bull, and can pull that damn hammer from where ever it is she gets it from."
Ranma still hadn't found where it was that Akane pulled that mallet, nor had he found a way to block it.
"She's a master class mage, I'd say that she is one of the most powerful masters that I've run across. If only she'd get the idea that adepts don't just batter things down she'd be adept class easily. She's cute, and I wonder just what is under all that cloth and wait a minute, where'd that thought come from?"
Ranma sighed, "Great, now I'm living in a bard's tale. If she expects me to sing to her by moonlight she's got another thing coming," he grumbled. "Still Oh hell."
He turned over and punched his pillow a couple of times, "I KNOW my mother had something to do with this. Why'd I have to fall in love with that tomboy anyway?"
Ranma leaned over and grabbed the book he had been reading. It had appeared in his baggage on his trip from his home. It was a simple black book. Most of it did not even have writing on it. Actually, only the first few pages did, though the book grew everyday. Then there was that note. He found it on the page that he turned to today.
Ranma,
You need to marry her, trust me.
Ranma.
Ranma had sent a few probes at the book. It glowed with mage sight. Not only that, but it was his magic. Somehow he had sent the book back in time to himself, and forward in time as well. There was also a spell on it that had started recording his life from when he opened it. Ranma had cast a spell to extend it back to his birth. Whatever it was he was doing, it seemed important enough have all the facts there. He just wished he knew what it was he was doing.
"Time magics always give me a headache." he complained.
Ranma and Akane were married that day in the great hall. The High King blessed their union, lords Kevin and Richard carried on, and Ranma's mother just smiled mysteriously.
At one point during the ceremony, Ranma asked Akane about that. Akane blushed bright red and told him he'd find out about it later.
Later that night, he finally did.
************************************************************************
The letter had arrived by one of the king's own heralds.
To Lord-Adept Ranma, son of Lord Richard of Merlin, adept mage and his Lady Akane, daughter of Lord Kevin of Glastonbury, master mage.
From Pendragon, High King of all Britain
Greetings Ranma and Akane,
I trust that this letter finds you and yours well. I would not have called upon thee if my need were not so great. Ranma, I believe that you had met my son, Uthur, at your wedding. He is the crown prince and I fear soon to be the next High King. Ranma, you and your wife are known for your wisdom and power. I'm asking you, no, I beg you to come to the high court to guide my son. I am afraid that without your guidance, all that I have worked for will not survive. You see I am dying. Please come at once or I fear what the future may hold.
Wordlessly, Ranma handed the letter to Akane. They had been married for ten years now, ten years of love, struggles, laughter, and food poisoning. (Akane still hadn't learned how to cook)
After a few seconds, Akane handed the letter back to Ranma. "We have to go," she said.
Ranma nodded. After the Romans had left, the High King had worked hard to bring Britain together under one throne and had brought peace to the isle. It was an uneasy peace, one that could break apart at any time, but peace.
Ranma summoned the herald, "Tell the King that my wife and I are on our way and will arrive at the court soon."
The man nodded and left.
Ranma turned back to his wife; "We must see to the provisions and the lands while" he broke off.
"Ranma?" Akane asked, half worried. Then she stopped to as she felt it. Magic, powerful magic. A life's work, a master spell being completed. As Ranma's eyes grew wide, she recognized the telltale signature of the magic. It was her husband's.
Ranma leapt up, racing for the room where he and Akane slept. Akane was right on his heels. As he entered the room, he had to cover his eyes, for the book that was beside the bed, the book that was slowly writing down his life, was glowing incandescently.
Ranma slowly reached out and picked up the book, at his touch, the glow dimmed and was gone. He opened it up and a single sheet of paper fell out of the pages. Akane knelt to pick it up. The note was addressed to, and sealed by Ranma, Lord of Merlin.
Ranma slowly broke the seal and started to read.
Ranma,
The problem with tampering with time is that you are never sure just what will happen. Time is never set in stone and there was a small chance that you would not be on the path you are now. The magic you felt is the book extending throughout all time. It will be a guide to the times ahead, and the reasons for what you need to do. Remember, no matter what, you need to be by the High Kings side, from Uthur will come a King to unite the isle and bring a short golden age. By that time you will know what to do.
Ranma, Lord of Merlin
Ranma started flipping through pages of the book, it was filled, all of it, cover to cover. He sat down slowly. After a few minutes, he looked at his wife. "We will leave at once," he said.
That started the relationship between Ranma and the throne of the High King. Through his and Akane's wisdom, Britain was able to maintain that peace. Then the High King, Uthur Pendragon died. The only son he had was lost and it seemed that the throne would fall. But at this time Ranma was busy with something else, for it was he who had spirited away Uthur's son until such time that he should come and claim his throne.
************************************************************************
Akane smiled sadly at her husband; "It is going to fade away like a summers dream Ranma."
"No," Ranma said, "The idea will live on, long after the place and the people crumble into dust."
"Have you talked with the Lady of Avalon?" she asked.
Ranma looked at his wife, his eyes full of love. Time had brought wisdom to her eyes and lines to her face, but there was till that look. A look that only he got there. A look he first saw that night after his mother had told him that he would marry her.
"I have, she has agreed to what we ask. She can see my reasons, but she demands a price."
"And what price is that my husband?" Akane asked.
Ranma sighed, while he loved his wife there were two things that had never changed from when he had first met her. One, she still couldn't cook. Not even the summoned meals were eatable. And two, she still had a bad temper.
"The Lady said that she would grant my request, as long as chance has a random shot in it," he said.
"And what is this random shot?" she asked with an arched brow.
"You won't be the only girl in my life. Actually, there will maybe quite a few."
"What?" it came out flat and cold. Ranma knew he was on thin ice.
"Well, she said that while having someone who was the best of the best in whatever it is they will do, she also wanted to make sure that chance could interrupt from time to time. As I said that my love for you will be a main factor, she felt that adding other women might have enough chance to satisfy her."
"How many?"
"Four, at least."
"At least? Ranma"
Ranma desperately held up his hands, "Wait! There shouldn't be a problem!"
"You"
"I'll send my love for only you, I mean he won't" 'To late,' Ranma thought.
"JERK!!!!!"
As Ranma lay on the ground in the broken bloody heap he was he muttered something, "Uncute tomboy."

Nerima: Present Day
'Some things never change, no matter how far in the past,' Ranma thought as the book fell back into his lap, closed, for now.
"Ranma!" Akane's voice called to him from the ground below. He stuck his head over the side to see her with her hands on her hips.
"Just how long are you going to be on the roof Ranma? It's already after dark," she asked.
Ranma looked around; indeed, full dark had already wrapped its black curtain around Nerima. He had been unaware of the passage of time while entrapped in the book.
"So why are you up there anyway?"
Ranma considered telling her about the book, about everything. 'No, not yet,' a voice whispered in his mind.
"Ahhh, ummmm, just thinking Akane," he tried lamely.
Akane smirked, "That's a first, did you strain your brain Ranma?"
Ranma leapt down from the roof, "And what do you know about it you tomboy? I'd bet if you'd try thinking you'd wouldn't kill people with that slop you call cooking!" he fired back, almost automatically.
"Why you," Akane started.
The sleeping town of Nerima was woken to the loud shout of "Ranma no baka!" and the sound of heavy mallet strikes. This was normal for Nerima so most went back to sleep.
As Ranma laid there, broken and bleeding, he though to himself, 'Yup, something's never change.'
End chapter one.
Yes, there will be a chapter two, but please, I will actually get it done faster if I know that people want to read it. Soooo send c&c, MST, whatever. Thanks again to my pre-readers Nick and Toby. They actually managed to get through the nightmare I call my spelling and grammar.
