Actually, whether the girl that drowned was young, or made Cologne
look like a toddler is academic. The springs are named in Chinese (or
Shampoo would have fallen into the Neko-nichuan, instead of the
Maonichuan), and Niang is an older word in Chinese that means the
feminine sex in general. It is not limited to young girls, or girls
'within the ages of N and M'. So, the spring is really the 'Spring
of Drowned (really old word for girl)'.
Perhaps the translation of 'young girl' is a fanfic convention? ^_^
I had a look at the kanji for 'nyan' used when writing 'Nyanniichuan'.
In Japanese it's the kanji for 'musume' - which is used to mean
'daughter' or 'young girl'.
So I guess it's not a fanfic convention but Viz's translation.
