Oops.  I mistaked the B-25 for the B-17.  My memory must be going.  :) 

Well, I'm not sure about using your brand new heavy strategic bomber as
a transport plane, It's simply not equipped for the job. 

Well, the XX Bomber command (India-China) did use freighter B-29s to
transport supplies (gas, bomes, toilet paper, etc) to their Chinese bases. 
C-26 Curtiss Commandos were also used to haul them (2/3 of supplies).  The
pilots called it "flying over the hump."  A LOT of them died.

Japanese mainland were steadily stepped up, mainly form bases in the
Marianas and on Guam, with forces of up to 450 and 500 Superfortresses

Yep.  Commander LeMay boasted that he'll bomb Japan "back to the stone
ages."
