Inparticular, is cremation common? and would it be completely unheard of
for a girl to be buried/cremated in her weddin kimono?

Cremation, I believe, is common.

Don't know if the girl would really be cremated in a wedding kimono, but I
had it happen in my 'fic, so... ^_^;;;
