Part One: Commanding Presence

Misato looked from the new commander, to Fuyutsuki, and asked, "Are
you serious?"
The professor looked sternly at her, "Yes, he is the new commander,
and you should show the respect he deserves."
She opened her mouth, but before sound could leave it, Tylor waved
a hand in the air and said, "Now, now... let's not fight. We just met
one another."
Misato closed her mouth and looked at Tylor, taking in his ruffled
appearance and lazy grin. She began to massage her temples and wished
she had a beer. She sighed deeply and looked back to the man sitting
atop the most powerful calculator in history. "Okay, commander, but
what are you going to do about Shinji?" She had picked him up the day
before, and found she liked him.
Tylor blinked, "Gendou's son is here?"
"Yes, sir, he is... and he doesn't know about his father yet."
Tylor turned and looked at Fuyutsuki, who simply nodded his head.
He turned back to Misato and smiled reasuringly. "I'll make sure he's
okay."
Misato, for her part, wasn't entirely convinced, and stared at
Tylor for a moment before answering, "Thank you, sir."
Tylor's smile grew enormously, and he hopped down from Melchior.
Straightening his coat, causing his smiley face pin to shake about, he
looked about at the crew of NERV one last time and headed toward the
door leading to the commander's office. Almost as an afterthought, he
looked up to Fuyutsuki and yelled, "Send Shinji my office, please!"
Receiving a nod in reply, Tylor walked through the door, and let it
slam loudly behind him.
Murmurs instantly shot through the Terminal as everything from
comments to outright rumors began and spread. Fuyutsuki stared down at
the cacaphonic reaction for a moment, then ordered everyone back to
their positions. He sighed and closed his eyes as everyone did as told.
He had only ever met Tylor once, and he would not have placed him as the
leader type.
     "Are you okay, sir?"
He jumped slightly and looked to Maya, who had come to stand behind
him. "I thought I said to return to your post." he barked.
Maya flinched slightly, but glared back at him after a moment.
"You look as though you need some... comforting, sir."
Fuyutsuki blinked, then his defenses collapsed. He smiled at the
young technician and nodded, "Perhaps you are right." His look turned
curious, "So, what do you suggest?"
She blushed and turned away. "I... I don't know."
His eyes widened and he found his jaw hanging open. He may have
been the oldest person in NERV proper, but that didn't make him too old.
He decided to take the plunge. "What are you doing tonight, Ibuki?"

Tylor sat at in the middle of the largest and most dreary office he
had ever set foot in. He stared at the giant Sephiroth adorning the
ceiling and span around in the chair behind the desk, which also happend
to be the only piece of furniture in the room. What in the world was
Gendou thinking when he made this monstrosity?
The door opened behind him with the sound of a shotgun, making his
heart skip a beat. He slowly peeked over the back of the chair at what
made the sound. It was Misato, and with her was Shinji. He span about
in the chair and smiled hugely. "Ah! Misato, I see you brought Shinji.
How appropriate!"
Misato blinked and asked, "Why exactly is that, sir?"
Tylor shrugged, "I don't know... just seems right." The lazy grin
reappeared mystically on his face as if just for her benefit. She
didn't like it, reminded her of someone she had been trying to forget
for a long time.
He turned his gaze down to the brown hared boy who was looking
about the office as if it were Satin's conference room. His smile
turned more genuine and he said, "Welcome to NERV, Shinji."
Shinji stared at Tylor for a moment, then answered, "Hi... I
thought I was supposed to meet father."
The smile fell away from Tylor's face. He studied Shinji in return
a bit before continuing, "I'm Commander Justy Ueki Tylor, the new head
officer of NERV."
Shinji looked confused, "What happened to father?"
"Well, Shinji, your father is dead. He was found to have commited
seppuku in his quarters last week." Tylor said in almost a whisper, but
the room echoed it to the point where it sounded like a yell.
Shinji stood emotionless for a moment, unsure of how to react.
Part of him wanted to scream, part of him wanted to cry, and an almost
frighteningly large part of him wanted to get down and party. Such was
the internal conflict that he could simply stand there staring at Tylor.
The commander blinked, finding no reaction in Shinji. He looked up
at Misato questioningly. Receiving a shrug in response, he looked back
to the boy. "Shinji, are you okay?"
Shinji inhaled deeply and focused on Tylor once more. "Yeah... I
think so. It's just a bit of a shock is all."
Tylor nodded as sagely as possible. "That's to be expected." He
stopped and looked worridly at the child, "Shinji, your father was a
great man, I hope you can understand that."
Shinji opened his mouth, as if to say something, but he was
interrupted by a siren. The intercom came to life and announced the
detection of an unknown object moving toward Tokyo-3.
Misato's looked urgent, "It could be an Angel, sir!"
Tylor blinked, "An Angel?" He rose from the chair and patted
himself off. He looked up and smiled, "I've never seen one of those
before." Then, he added, "Excepting, of course, the one who brought
Shinji here."
He walked calmly past a blushing Misato, and a confused Shinji. He
turned about at stared at the two. "Care to join me?" He opened the
door and waved a hand toward it.
Misato coughed and nodded curtly. She grabbed Shinji by the arm
and lead him out of the office, turning her nose up slightly as she
passed the commander.
Tylor grabbed both doors while looking back into the office. Then
he slammed them shut with a grin.
