This is a story I wrote a little while ago just for fun. It was
previously posted to the LoGH (Legend of the Galactic Heroes; Ginga
Eiyuu Densetsu) ML, but I've since done a little editing and thought it
might be fun to post it here. It's also on my webpage along with a
(IMHO) cute composite picture I created. It's a little short as fanfics
go. I may or may not continue it later depending on personal interest,
other projects, and RL allowing (I haven't had time to think in the past
2 weeks!). Apologies in advance for my pathetic attempts at Romanji.
Enjoy!

Flight of the Valkyries
by Jennifer Califf
The battle was going exactly as planned. Reinhart von Lohengram's forces
numbered more than twice that of the enemy and it was just a matter of
time before total victory was his. He smiled at his best friend and
confidant Seigfried Kircheis.
"It's going well, isn't it, Kircheis?"
"It would seem so, Lord Reinhart." Reinhart turned his attention back to
the battle at hand.
"Still, there's no need to take unnecessary chances. Prepare to launch
the Valkyries."
Meanwhile on the flagship of the Alliance 13th fleet, Yang Wenli had
anticipated Reinhart's next move. He sat cross-legged and absentmindedly
played with his beret.
"He's launching the Valkyries." Yang stood up and put his beret back on
his head.
"It's time to test our secret weapon." Yang made a face at Fredericka,
"Remind me again who's great idea this was?"
Fredericka Greenhill, his adjutant, referred to her notes. "Admiral
Sitolet was the one who gave us the order, but I believe the idea
originated from the Secretary of Defense."
"Job Trunhit, huh? Well that would explain it. I suppose I could have
opposed it more strongly, but I think there may actually be some merit
to it. If it works it could end the war peacefully." Yang sighed. Just
then a member of the bridge crew called out.
"Your Excellency! Sound Force reports they are ready to begin the
operation."
"This is it." Yang pointed toward the enemy fleet. "Launch the
Valkyries!" Suddenly there was an eerie silence and every face turned
toward Yang in confusion. One spoke up.
"Don't you mean the Spartanians?"
"No, launch the Valkyries. Have the rest of the fleet pull back and let
them do their job." Silently Yang thought to himself, *I'm counting on
you, Fire Bomber!*
On the flagship Brunhilde, Reinhart leaned forward in his seat suddenly
aware that the Rebel fleet before him was behaving unexpectedly. They
had begun to withdraw at an alarming rate, and he wondered what had
caused this shift. Certainly he had been winning, and he eventually
expected the Rebel fleet to withdraw. However, he wasn't expecting the
Rebel fleet to just run away. Wasn't Yang Wenli commanding this fleet?
Reinhart expected more from his adversary.
"What is he doing? There must be some reason for this," Reinhart thought
aloud. "Kircheis, what do you think?"
"I don't know either. Perhaps we should withdraw ourselves? Or does he
want us to follow him?"
"I don't like having other people dictate the course of the battle to
me. We'll maintain our current position, but monitor the Rebel fleet
carefully. Keep all channels open."
"Your Excellency! Several small craft are approaching from the enemy
fleet at a very high velocity." Reinhart's eyes widened.
"Intercept them. Use the Valkyries!"
"Your Excellency, they're dodging all our efforts to stop them! They're
executing some incredible maneuvers!"
"Don't give me excuses!"
"Your Excellency! We've lost communication with parts of the fleet. The
small craft are emitting a powerful audio signal on all channels! It's
some kind of message!"
"Put it through!" Suddenly booming music swept through the Brunhilde's
speakers and communication system.
#HEY EVERYBODY!! Hikari o mezase!
#Odorouze! DANCIN' ON THE PLANET DANCE!
Reinhart and Kircheis both covered their ears in pain and horror.
"My God! Kircheis, do you know what this is?!"
"Lord Reinhart, I can't hear a word you're saying!"
"IT'S ROCK AND ROLL! Never in a thousand years would I have dreamt that
the Rebels would stoop so low!"
"What did you say?!"
"NEVER MIND! SOMEONE TURN THAT OFF!"
"WE ALREADY DID! THEY'RE USING AN EXTERNAL SYSTEM TO FEED THE MUSIC
INTO THE SHIP!"
"DAMN!" Reinhart looked around the ship and realized how vulnerable they
were. They couldn't fight like this.
#NO MORE WASTIN' LOVE! Ai o mudani suruna!
#Omae dake o darekaga mitsumeteruhazu!
"HAVE THE FLEET WITHDRAW! WITHDRAW IMMEDIATELY!! USE A VISUAL CODE!"
#HEY EVERYBODY!! Kokoro no mamani!
As the Imperial fleet began to withdraw the singing momentarily stopped
and the voice of the singer could be clearly heard over the beat of the
drums and the electric guitar.
"NO! WAIT!! YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO MY SONG!"
Back on the Alliance flagship, the crew watched in shock and wonder. At
first the Imperial attack had continued unabated, but in a matter of
minutes all return fire had ceased and obvious confusion reigned in the
Imperial fleet. Yang removed his beret.
"It's working. Unbelievable."
"Is this the power of rock and roll?" Fredericka stared in amazement.
They watched in silence until the Imperial fleet finally began to
withdraw. Spontaneous cheers went up from the crew. Yang smiled and
relaxed.
"That's enough. Contact Fire Bomber and tell them to return to the fleet
immediately. This battle is over."
In the cockpit of his Valkyrie, Nekki Basara watched the Imperial fleet
withdraw. He'd received the order to return to the fleet, but he
couldn't stand not being able to finish. He continued to play his
guitar.
"If they would just listen to the entire song!"
Frustrated, he finally turned back to the fleet. There would be another
chance.
