Humminah, Humminah, Humminah

The figure in front of the family shrine was not chanting a traditional
prayer. The sounds he made were more like the noise a lecherous man would
speak when looking on a pretty girl. After a few minutes he started
talking.

"I'm sorry mother, it's been a long time since I talked to you. I still
miss you, do you know that? I have been very lonely since you left."

"I remember when I was a little child and the others would make fun of me,
you were always there to give me a hug and a kiss. I always loved your
smell. You always smelled of the kitchen or of soap or of whatever else you
had been doing when I came in."

*********************

It was a typical village. A group of boys, looking to be from seven to ten
years old, surrounded a younger boy. His name was Shiro. He looked four
years old. He was actually five.

The leader of the gang moved forward and shoved Shiro down to the ground.

"Shiro, you are a little half-breed dwarf. Ha, Ha, Ha!"

"Why did you do that? I didn't do anything to you!" Shiro began crying as
he picked himself up.

"I did it because I wanted to!" The bully said with a grin.

As he saw the other boys moving forward. Shiro began running to his home.
The other boys, though older and stronger, could not keep up with him.

Realizing that they had lost him, they yelled at him as he got away.

"Run back to your momma, you dwarf!"

"Yeah, Don't let us catch you again, or you're going to get it!"

"You're not even Japanese! We'll get you! That's a promise, you litlle
mouse!"

"Ha, ha, ha"

"Mom!!" He cried as he ran into his home. "They picked on me again and
called me a half-breed and a dwarf! What's a dwarf?"

As his mother picked him up she said soothingly "Hush my baby. Don't let
them hurt you. Remember that when someone calls you a name, they are only
jealous of you." [Those little animals! If I ever catch them, I'll tear
them apart. How dare they taunt him!]

Minako-gozen looked at her little boy. She was a handsome tall woman. She
had long brown hair and green eyes. She liked to have it tied by a bow and
flipped over one shoulder. She carried him to the family room and sat down
with him. She began rocking the little boy and singing his favorite
"crying" song. It was just a hummed melody that slowly repeated itself. It
was magic to the little boy. It always made him feel better whenever he was
hurt or crying. Slowly, his tears dried. As he sat in his mother's lap, he
hugged her. He loved the feel of her kimono against his face. He loved her
smell. He looked up into her face and saw her warm brown eyes smiling sadly
into his. He was the luckiest boy in the world. His mommy loved him and he
knew it! "Thanks, Mommy I'm OK now!"

"Shiro-san, please go play with your brothers. Your sisters and I must see
to dinner." She smiled at him.

She patted him and watched him run off. She then began thinking sadly, [I
hope all of your hurts are as easy to fix as this, Shiro. Unless you start
growing again, I fear that your life will be difficult.] He had been a
perfect baby. He was precious, inquisitive and energetic. He always wanted
to be doing whatever his brothers or father were doing. He had grown just
like all of her other children until his fourth birthday. From that point
on, it seemed as if the Kami had cursed him to not grow any taller. She
knew that the other children in the village were going to be cruel to him
and that she could not help him. He would have to learn to stand on his
own. Yet, she knew that he was a sensitive boy. He took after his father
in that. His father was able to lose himself in his books and poetry. When
she was a little girl in China, she never would have guessed that she would
marry a Japanese samurai who preferred words to swords. She was her
husband's opposite in that respect. Where he had his head in his books, she
kept her feet firmly on the ground. How else could you take care of your
children, home and husband? She decided to talk to the other mothers and
ask them to tell their children to not pick on her littlest one. Shaking
her head and sighing, she stood up and made her way to the kitchen.

After leaving his mother's lap, Shiro ran to his father's dojo. Inside, he
found his father, Hikozabe Asai, training his brothers in the samurai arts.
His favorite and oldest brother Ichiro was fourteen years old. He was
almost ready to be a man. The second son was named Jiro. He was eleven.
Saburo was 6. Their father had begun training them all when they turned
five.

*********************

Hikozabe Asai was a mountain of a man. He stood six foot three inches tall
when the average Japanese man was barely five feet. Saying that he was
physically imposing would be an understatement. When people saw him coming,
they usually emptied the entire lane. He was also lithe and strong. He
wore his black hair in a ponytail that reached to his shoulderblades. His
eyes were brown and thoughtful. He was classically handsome, yet traces of
harshness marred his looks. He prided himself on many things. He was proud
of winning his wife during a campaign in China. He was proud of his height.
He was proud of his first three sons and how they were growing up to be as
big and strong as he was. They were going to be a formidable family once
again. The only regret in his life had been that he had been unable to
bring his branch of the Asai family into prominance. He knew that with his
training, his sons would be able to fulfill that dream. With Shiro,
Hikozabe felt anguish. Shiro seemed destined to be a dwarf. Who had ever
heard of a dwarf martial artist? The only dwarves Hikozabe had ever seen
were freaks or clowns. The Asai's would not have a freak or clown in their
family. If Shiro couldn't be a samurai, then he wouldn't consider him a
son.

Ichiro, the oldest at fourteen, looked like a young version of his father.
He excelled at the martial arts. He had inherited his mother's quickness.
Using it, he usually beat his father when sparring now. Whether he won or
lost his fights, Ichiro would always laugh and take his opponents hand. He
was happy and jovial. The other children of the village always liked to be
around him. For some reason that Shiro didn't know, the girls of the
village, especially, liked to be around him. Shiro loved Ichiro and wanted
to be just like him.

Jiro was unusual in that he had green eyes. He was also the most
intelligent of Shiro's three older brothers. When Jiro sparred, he always
held back and made the other person show their style. When he knew how they
fought, he would find their weakness and exploit it mercilessly. When asked
why he took out his partners as viciously as he did, Jiro would just say
that he didn't like to fight and wanted to end it as quickly as he could.

Saburo and Shiro didn't get along. Saburo was fourteen months older than
Shiro and already more than a full head taller than Shiro. Instead of being
close brothers, they tended to compete with each other over everything.
Saburo looked like a miniature version of his father. Shiro was still
jealous over the fact that Saburo was training under their father.

*********************

Shiro didn't know why his father refused to train him. He started the
others when they were five. Why couldn't he begin training? His father
would always look at him and say that he wasn't tall enough, yet.

Since his father wouldn't train him, Shiro would stand just outside the dojo
and copy what his brothers were doing. Unnoticed by his father, Shiro was
able to master each kata after seeing it once. Ichiro did notice and
started helping his little brother. Ichiro was impressed with how well his
brother learned. He was also surprised with how quick his little brother's
reflexes were. They were even faster than his! After their last training
session, Ichiro had told Shiro that he wanted their father to see how good
he was. Shiro was beyond excited. More than anything else, Shiro wanted
his father's approval.

When Ichiro saw Shiro standing in the entrance of the dojo, he said,
"Father, I think you should see something. Shiro has been training for
several months and I think he's ready for your training. Please, watch
him!" Shiro then smiled encouragingly to Shiro and motioned him into the
dojo. [Shiro, I've done what I can for you. Good luck, brother!]

Shiro looked at his father. [Please, father. Let me show you what I've
learned.] His father looked at him and grunted his approval to enter the
dojo. Shiro began beaming. He quickly bowed to his father and entered the
dojo. [Thank you, father! I won't fail you. Thank you, Ichiro!]

Shiro walked to the center of the dojo. His father stood directly in front
of him. His brother, Ichiro, was to his left. His other two brothers sat
against the wall on his right. The door was behind him. He came to
attention. He was very nervous.

Slowly at first, he began going through all of the katas he had learned.
The more he did the less nervous he was. As he confidence rose, his speed
increased. As he finished his last kata, he was moving faster than even
Ichiro could through his positions. Finally, he stopped. He was a little
out of breath. He looked at Ichiro. Ichiro was beaming in pride for him.
[I did good!] He looked at Jiro and Saburo. They both looked surprised and
shocked. [Surprised you, brothers!]
Finally, hesitatingly, he looked at his father. His father stood
emotionlessly. He was neither smiling nor frowning. Shiro again came to
attention waiting for his father's word.

"Shiro, you did fair. You are still too short to be effective as a fighter.
The ability to run through a kata is good. How would you do against an
opponent who is bigger and stronger?" His father thought for a moment, than
said, "Saburo, spar with your brother."

"Hai!" Saburo said.

Shiro faced Saburo and they both waited for the signal from their father.
At the signal, Saburo charged Ichiro expecting to easily beat the smaller
boy. Ichiro knowing how much stronger his brother was, ducked under
Saburo's punches and used a leg sweep to take down his brother. He then
jumped onto Saburo's back and held him on the ground.

"STOP!" His father yelled.

Shiro stood away from his brother and bowed to his father. He was happy.
He had shown that he knew the katas and was able to defeat his brother
easily. [Surely, father will train me now!]

He looked at his father. He expected his father to be proud and happy for
him. Instead, his father was angry. [What did I do wrong?]

"Shiro, go to the house. You are not ready to train in my dojo. You have
learned some skills, but are still too small to be a fighter. To be a
mighty warrior, you must be tall and strong. I don't think you ever will
be." His father said coldly. "In fact, I think it would be better for you
to grow up and be a priest or clerk of some kind."

Shiro stood in shock. Not only did his father not accept him, he sent him
to the house. As his heart broke in agony, Shiro tried not to cry.
Sniffling, he turned from his father and walked out of the dojo to the
house. Before he left, he looked at Ichiro. Ichiro had tears in his eyes.

As he left, he heard his father berating Saburo for losing to someone as
small as Shiro.

*********************

That evening after she had put the children to bed, Minako-gozen talked to
Hikozabe. "Our baby has a problem, dear. He is being picked on more and
more by the other children. Maybe it is time to start his training." She
said worriedly.

"I have heard about his problems. Did you know that Ichiro had been
training him the last few months? I didn't. He brought Shiro into the dojo
today to show off what he had learned. He did well. He even beat Saburo.
What can I do? He is too small to be a samurai. What kind of respect would
a dwarf be able to get? Our son is a disgrace. I think we should send him
off to a monastery so that no one will know he is mine." he said.

She couldn't believe what her husband had just told her. Angrily, she
began, "You will never say that to me again! He is OUR son and I will NOT
let him be sent away. Do you understand me?"

"Yes. Just don't expect me to love him as I do his brothers and sisters who
are normal." Hikozabe said with venom.

"Ohhhhh, I do not believe I am hearing this from you! Do you not love your
own son?" Minako was in a fury.

"When my son is a curse sent to me by the Kami? No." He said flatly.

"Very well, dear, I will take care of him." She said in a cold hiss.

"Very well. Good night" He said. He then got up and went to their
bedroom.

A little boy who should not have been awake, felt his heart shatter.
...
His father didn't love him.
...
His father didn't even like him.
...
A little boy who should not have been awake, cried.

*********************

The next morning, he and his mother began a new game. It was weird. She
told him that he had to learn to fail, before he could learn to win. He did
not know what that meant. He did know that his mother loved him and she was
spending time with him. What more did he need to know?

All he had to do to win was to walk across a log. That was easy. His
mother then suspeneded the log by ropes. That was harder. He did it.
Minako then let his sisters try to knock him off with sticks. He learned
what failing was. It was being hit by your sister with a stick! It hurt!
By the time he was six, he was able to run back and forth on the log while
it and his sisters swung away.

As time went by, the game got harder and harder. After he learned to fail,
they played tag. All he had to do was to tag his mother. It was harder
than he expected. She kept dodging and moving in ways that he never
expected. She was a gentle and patient teacher. After every game, she sat
down and talked to him about how he could have tagged her and what he could
do the next day. He wanted to be the best for his Mommy. As he became
better at the game, fewer of the village children could get away with
beating him up or taunting him. However, he always felt set apart from the
other children. They always looked down on him because he was so much
smaller than everyone else.

His father never really said much to him. Occasionally, his father would
ask him if he had grown any. When told no, his father would frown and turn
away. This hurt Shiro. All he wanted waas his father to be proud of him.

*********************

When Shiro was seven years old, there was a plague in the village. Shiro,
two of his sisters and his mother all came down with it. It was a terrible
disease. The doctor told Hikozabe that he had to keep plenty of fluids in
them or that they would die. Seeing this as a chance to rid himself of an
embarrassment, Hikozabe saw to it that his daughters and wife had the proper
amount of water. He ordered that Shiro noty be given any water. He
actually thought that the plague had been sent by the Kami to allow him to
rid his family of his shame.

Minako, sick as she was, realized what was happening. She sacrificed her
water for her Shiro. When she knew that her children would live, Minako
died.

At the funeral pyre, Hikozabe, in an agony of self-loathing and grief told
Shiro, "You are the cause of Minako's death. You are not her son. You
never were her son. You have always been a leech on this family. From this
day on, you are not my son. You have no family. Leave now, Murderer!!!"

Shiro did not know what to feel. He had just lost his mother. Now, he was
thrown out of his home. The only feeling he had was of numbness. He slept
that night in the temple where his mother's funeral pyre had been.

The next morning he went to see the man who had been his father. Wanting to
have something of Minako's, he asked Hikozabe for a small treasure.

Hikozabe looked at him and snarled, "Now you come to me as a begger asking
for treasures? Wait here, I'll bring you a treasure."

Hikozabe went into his home. A little later, he brought out a pair of
Minako's panties. He then threw them at Shiro and said, "You always hid
behind your mother. Here is the only treasure of hers you are worthy of.
Leave my presence. I never want to see you again."

...

His beloved mother was dead. His father had disowned him. He sat down by
the back gate of what used to be his home. He was scared. He was in an
agony of grief. He then curled up into a fetal position and cried. Each
day, one of his sisters would bring him food and water. They would force
him to eat and drink it before leaving him. If they hadn't done this for
him, he would have died. He cried for a full week before he could stop. He
became a street beggar.

*********************

After several months, one of his mother's sisters came to find out what had
happened. Her name was Li Ming (Beautiful and Bright). She took him and
his sisters to China. When his father tried to stop her, Li Ming warned
him. He laughed in her face and went to his ready stance. Li Ming knocked
Hikozabe out before Shiro could see what had happened. During the trip to
China, she told them that their mother had been an Amazon warrior. Minako
had been defeated by Hikozabe. Afterwards, Minako left the tribe and
changed her name out of love. His mother's Chinese name had been Li Wei
(Beautiful Rose). She then asked why Shiro had not been living with the
rest of the family. Shiro merely shook his head no and cried. His sisters
told her the story. Upon hearing the story, Li Ming sat with Shiro and his
sisters.

She took him in her arms and spoke softly to him. "Shiro, I am sorry for
what that ... man ... did to you. What he did to you should not be done to
anyone. I promise you that I will never abandon you. I also promise that I
will not that happen to you again. I also want you to know that there are
many other members of our family in the village that will love you also."
She stopped and looked into his eyes to see if he understood.

Shiro looked back at her with empty eyes. He was to afraid of being hurt to
let anyone love him again. He moved out of her arms and sat next to her.
He sighed, "Yes, Aunt?"

Li Ming hurt from the pain she saw in Shiro. She looked at him and then to
his sisters. "I want to ask all of you a question." She paused to make
sure that she had their attention. "When we get to our village, I would
like to formally adopt you. You would become my son and daughters. I
promise to be the best mother I can be."

Shiro's sisters looked at each other and then embraced Li Ming. That was
all the answer she needed from them. She smiled at Shiro expectantly.

He hesitated. He began to cry, "Thank you, Aunt Li Ming. I cannot accept.
I have a mother. She may be dead, but she is my mother. I don't need
anyone else."

Li Ming cried bittersweet tears. She was happy to be able to adopt her
neices. She felt grief over the pain endured by one so little. She felt
fury at the one who had caused it.

Li Ming took them to the Amazon village. She told everyone but the elders
that Li Wei and Hikozabe had been killed. She told the elders the truth.

Shiro lived in the village until he was seventeen. Since he had no Chinese
name and his family name had been taken from him, the amazons decided to
called him Qi Li (to be one force). This was because he would not work or
play with anyone else. This caused him problems his first year with the
Amazons. The other children felt that he snubbed them. Actually, he was
afraid of getting hurt again. Being children, the others snubbed him and
made fun of him. The other boys were the meanest. They nick-named him
little pig. He was called little pig by the other children until he
defeated them all.

He found that he was a natural at all martial arts. While he was with the
Amazons, he learned all that they could teach. The two greatest things they
taught him were how to store things in weaponspace and how to use chi. The
only rule to using weaponspace was that every time you took a something out
of it, you had to return something. Over time, He became the best male
fighter of his generation. There was only one warrior who could beat him.
Her name was Cologne. Even so, she could only beat him every other time.

Over time, the other children began to respect him because of his martial
arts skills. No one ever thought that his height was a problem. If
anything, they thought more of him because he wasn't as big and strong as
most of the men or women. However, no one, not even Cologne could get him
to talk about himself. Whenever he was asked about Japan, he would act as
if the question had not been asked. He always seemed happy. He acted as if
nothing ever bothered him. Except at tournaments, he never had anything to
do with the men of the tribe. He only suffered the boys when he needed to.
With the women of the village, he was a shy, reserved child. They felt
sorry for him. He liked the village girls. They seemed to just accept him.
He liked that.

He made a shrine for his mother. Since all he had of her were here panties,
he made them the centerpiece of her shrine. He prayed there at least twice
a week. He would have long conversations with her. The only time he ever
talked about himself was when he prayed at his mother's shrine.

Li Ming tried many times over the years to break through his loneliness.
She never did.

*********************

Sometime during the year he was nine, Cologne took it upon erself to show
him the wonders that the Village held. She showed him a bracelet that held
three love pills in it. He was unimpressed. She showed him a family
heirloom. It was a hand-mirror. She called it the Nanban mirror. Whe he
asked what was so great about a mirror, Cologne told him of its use. She
told him that a tear shed upon its surface could send someone forward or
backwards in time. He didn't believe her.

"Prove it to me." he said.

Cologne was scared, "Okay, I will." She thought for a minute. She looked
at him and smiled. [I know what will make him happy!] She forced a tear
from her eye. As it hit the mirror, she said, "Take us to the day Li Wei
was defeated!" [He'll be so happy! He'll get to see how great a warrior his
mother was and how great his father was.]

"NO! I DON'T WANT..." Qi Li began to scream as the Mirror performed its
magic.

The mirror brought Cologne and Qi Li to the outskirts of the village.

"... TO GO THERE!", Qi Li finished. "Please, let's go back. I believe
you!"

Cologne laughed, "You challenged me and we will finish this challenge.
Don't you want to see your father and mother again? Especially on their day
of betrothal? It'll be so romantic."

They looked around. The village looked the same. However as they
approached the gate, they noticed that the guard looked like a young version
of an elder.

"You there, who are you and what do you want here?" The guard asked in a
bored tone.

Cologne answered, "We are Amazons. I am Cologne and this is Qi Li. We are
here to visit Li Wei and Li Ming. Could you direct us to their home?"

Awake now, the guard said, "I don't recognize you, but you are speaking
correctly for an Amazon." The guard then gave them directions.

Approaching the hut, they heard many noises inside. Cologne walked up and
knocked on the door.

When the door opened, Qi Li felt his heart stop. It was his mother! She
was so beautiful. She looked to be no older than eighteen. She had the
long brown hair he remembered. It was even tied and slung over her
shoulder. Her green piercing eyes settled on Cologne. She saw two nine
year old children nervously looking up at her. The boy looked as if he was
about to pass out.

Gruffly, she asked, "Yes, what is it?"

Cologne was startled. She never expected Qi Li's mother to be as tall or as
beautiful as this. She stammered, "L-Li Wei?"

"Yes, I have a fight I'm trying to get ready for. Now, what is it?"

"W-W-We heard about your fight and wanted to know if we could watch it?"

"Yes. It will be in the challenge arena at noon. Feel free to watch."
Smiling at the stricken boy, Li Wei continued, "Watch this fight well boy,
you might want to catch this one someday."

Cologne and Qi Li blushed as Li Wei went back inside.

Cologne and QI Li went to the challenge arena found a good place to watch
and waited. A little before noon, Li Wei entered the arena. She was
resplendent ih her chaleenge clothes. She wore a green silk blouse that
matched her eyes. There was a red stylized dragon on the blouse. It's tail
started by her right waist. It coiled up and around her three times. Its'
head started on her left shoulder and continued to her elbow. She wore
matching green silk pant with red fringe. Her slippers were also made of
red silk. Her weapon of choice was a Chinese Great Sword. She whirled it
up and around herself as if it were made of straw.

Qi Li was mesmerized. His mother was an amazing warrior. Cologne was
impressed also. She looked at Li Wei. She decided that when she grew up,
she wanted to look just like this woman on her challenge day.

At noon, there was a disturbance. A man rode in on a horse to the center of
the field. He wore a traditional Samurai's garb. He towered over the
people of the village. Several of the women looked at him and then shot
envious looks at Li Wei. Hikozabe looked neither to the left or the right.
He had eyes only for Li Wei.

"Do you accept my challenge, Li Wei?" He asked in a haughty voice.

Qi Li looked at the tableau not knowing what to feel.

"I accept any challenge." Li Wei said emotionlessly.

"Shall we begin?" Hikozabe asked.

"Yes." Li Wei said.

CRAACCK

Before anyone could react, Hikozabe had pulled a pistol from within his
garments and shot Li Wei. She was shot in her right leg. She went down in
a heap.

Hikozabe sauntered over to her. "Do you yield?" He asked smirking.

"Yes." Li Wei managed before passing out.

Qi Li could not believe it. Hikozabe had used a banned weapon. Guns had
been banned centuries before in Japan. His -father- had just used one to
defeat his mother.

"You honorless dog!" Wi Li yelled out in Japanese as he raced onto the
field. "You would use a banned weapon to gain a wife?"

"Who are you boy to challenge me and my honor?" Hikozabe looked at Qi Li in
anger.

"I know that samurai are not allowed to use that weapon. I challenge you!"
Qi Li continued.

Cologne was mortified. She thought she was going to give Qi Li a present.
Instead, they both found out that his mother had been beaten by a trick.

"I accept boy. To let you know who you face, I am Hikozabe Asai, a samurai.
Learn my name and fear it!" Hikozabe said to Qi Li.

"I am Qi Li and I am a warrior." Wi Li said as he attacked.

Qi Li remembered that his father always tried to take out attackers by using
his height and reach. Qi Li closed in so that he was inside of Hikozabe's
defense. He pummeled his father in the stomach. If Hikozabe had not been
in his armor, he would have been knowcked down by the attack by the little
boy. Instead, he knocked the boy out with the pommel of his sword.

Looking at Cologne as she rushed to Qi Li's side, Hikozabe snarled, "I
should have killed him, but I have no wish to kill someone on my wedding
day. Get him out of my sight."

Cologne pulled Qi Li away from the arena. She then hugged him as she cried
onto the mirror. "Take us home."

Qi Li and Cologne never talked about that day again.

*********************

When he had just turned seventeen, one of the village boys played a prank on
him. He stole the panties out of Qi Li's shrine. He thought they were
something Qi Li had stolen. He showed them to everyone and called Qi Li a
pervert. Qi Li exploded. It was the first time anyone in the village had
every seen him angry. It was a cold anger. He beat the offender to within
an inch of death. The boy could never run again. Because of the severity
of the beating, the village elders decided that Qi Li's punishment would be
for him to be a pariah for a year. The only one allowed to have anything to
do with him was Cologne. She was allowed contact because it was expected
that she would become his wife one day. Of course, she would lose her
marriage duel at a time of her choosing.

Qi Li didn't like his punishment. He felt wronged. He decided to change
his name again. Now he would be called Happosai. If they thought he was a
pervert, OK. A pervert he would be. He intentionally stole panties, bras
and other intimate things from every amazon in the tribe. He even stole
from the honored elders who had sentenced him. As it couldn't be proven
that he had stolen the items, the amazons let him be. It wasn't until
Cologne caught him with her Nanban mirror that he was banished. He then
ran away from the tribe, carrying all of his booty over his shoulder. He
wanted to flaunt his abilities in their faces.

He closed the shrine carefully. He wiped his eyes and said, "Goodbye
mother, I will talk to you soon. I am glad that you love me. I love you,
too."

Happosai then turned and lay down on his futon and went to sleep.

Nabiki, in her room, took off her earphones. She wiped her eyes, "I didn't
know that Happosai had any side other than being an old pervert."

She looked at her recording equipment. She took the cassette out of the
machine and set it aside. "Some things are too personal to sell." She
thought. "Dang, I must be getting soft."

The next installment will reflect on Happosai's early adulthood. Where did
he learn the rest of his techniques? When did he go back to Japan? Did he
ever see his father or brother's again?
