I feel compelled to answer these publically.

Nope.  Taro is out for himself.  He won't prey on anybody, but he won't
help anybody either without sufficient reward to himself.  His main 

goal in

life
is to get Happosai to change his name.  He'll pratically do anything to
achieve it.

  Then explain to me why he rescues not one, but two++ girls in trouble 
while he's travelling (and where its revealed that Taro's afraid to give 
each girl his name, this was the second Taro story, btw). 

How in the world could he possibly stay
around a girl long enough for her to figure out his name? (ideas
welcome; I already have my own idea, but I want to know if there's a
better way).

Just have him and Ranma meet.  Ranma always uses his last name.

  That's what I had in mind, but the trick is, to keep this girl with 
Taro long enough for Ranma to come around. Given how the girls he meet 
always ask his name, which causes him to run off, how can this be done? 
  I'm pretty sure 'Pantyhose' is NOT his last name, considering how none 
of the Chinese characters have last names given in the stories. 

He is highly
independent and would rather die than to feel in debt to anyone.

  Gotcha. Heh, ideas are already churning as how to use this tidbit....
