Well, why not have *two* FFML mailing lists?  Divvy 
up the messages: one ML solely for fanfics and one 
for messages/C&C/MST/ideas/spamfics, or some other 
way of separating the message types.  For those who 
only want to read fics, it would reduce the size 
needed, plus reduce the weeding out of the stuff you 
want from what you don't.  (There are times when I'd 
like to stop getting messages altogether, and just 
get fanfics; I'm sure a few people would echo that 
sentiment.)  Anybody got a different/better way to 
handle it?

Ideas of this kind were tossed around a year ago, and the general
consensus was that splitting the list would be more trouble than it
would be worth. As White Wolf said, it would defeat the purpose of the
list if we didn't have discussion of fics on the same list as the fics
themselves.

Frankly, I think Damon is worried unnecessarily. Apart from "adfic
challenges" and such, the volume of fics isn't likely to get high enough
to cause any problem by itself. If we get more writers joining up, the
likely effect is going to be that writers will slow down and produce
fewer fics of higher quality, because it's the best way to get noticed.
Also, readers will tend to specialize more -- which is something that's
already happening. For example, there are some of us who only read Ranma
fics, and others who don't read Ranma fics.
