Earth Angel
"We all have an angel... sometimes you just have to look in unlikely
places."

He looked out the window at the slowly setting sun, watching with a
new eye the colors that played across the landscape. *It's hard to
imagine this place held so much life once.* he thought to himself, *Only
sixteen years ago...*
His thought were interrupted by a krinkle of plastic from his
bedside. He turned his head to see a face he now took for granted.
"So, the Class Rep has returned to the fallen hero." He grinned as she
sat in the chair placed next to him for visitors.
She smiled back at him, a much warmer and caring gesture. "How are
you feeling today?"
He looked down at his less than complete form and back at her.
"Pretty well considering."
"How much longer until they take you in to put them on?" Her brow
furrowed slightly.
He knew she didn't like to talk about the cybernetic implants he
would be receiving, but he forced himself to smile for her benefit.
"They say tomorrow... so you probably won't be able to come in."
Her face became one of concern once again. "Don't talk like that.
I'll be here... otherwise..." She looked away from him, "Otherwise,
you'll be alone."
He frowned, "You don't have to be here... I don't want you missing
school for just me."
She turned back to him angry, making him shut his mouth with a
snap. "I will be here!" she repeated with such finality and
determination that he thought she would sooner die than not meet him as
he exited the operating room.
He blinked, then regained his composure. "Sure, whatever." he said
with a wave of his hand. "Just don't complain to me when sensei chews
you out."
She laughed, her cheerful demeanor falling easily back into place.
"That robot? I swear he's some sort of android NERV is testing."
His laughed answered hers, "Yeah, along with Rei."
Both their laughter rang through the otherwise quiet room. He
stopped after a moment and listened to her continue. He watched as her
cheeks grew slightly red from her exertion. He had seen her face many
times, but never truly looked at it. *She is cute when she laughs.* was
his silent opinion.
Finally she died down to a giggle which he found even more
appealing for some reason, then ceased. She wiped a tear from her eye
and opened them again. He noticed the blush grow deeper as she noticed
him staring at her.
He pulled his gaze reluctantly away from hers and coughed lightly.
"Well, it's about time for you to go, isn't it?"
She glanced at her watch and her look became one of disappointment.
"Yeah, it is." She stood up and said, "I'll be here tomorrow, so expect
me to grill you when you get out of surgery."
He grinned and saluted, "Hai, Class Rep... I'll give you all the
details."
She smiled lightly and turned to leave.
"Hikari." He grinned lightly as he saw her jump.
She glanced back at him, "Suzuhara?"
"It's Touji." He looked out the window once again, "And thanks."
As the sun fell completely below the horizon he heard the rustle of
plastic that announced her departure. He sighed contentedly and closed
his eyes for the night.
