Okay, since I've been writing alot of gargoyle fanfics, I thought it might
be a good idea to put my thoughts as to the origin of the gargoyles.

Fact: The gargoyles have existed for a long time.  Probably several
thousand years.

Fact: At one point, the gargoyle race was broken up, and was forced to
separated into several smaller clans that were spread over the entire world.

Fact: The human race has existed for a long time. (duh! :)

Fact: We have legends of an advanced race of ancient humans who were forced
to separate into smaller tribes and were spread over the globe (Atlantis)

Hypothesis:

The gargoyles were created by Atlantian sorcerers as a guardian race for
their empire.  The need to protect humans was magically/genetically
programmed into them.  (Of course, just like any self-willed creature,
directives can be overcome. (ie. I think Demona has successfully supressed
her instinctive need to protect humans.))  When Atlantis was destroyed, the
various gargoyle clans travelled witht the human tribes to all points of
the earth.

Makes sense if you think about it.
