Historians Note: This takes place after the events chronicled in Here Comes Jurai and Tenchi the Movie: Tenchi Muyo! In Love.
The Now:
Ever have a bad day? I mean a really bad day? One of those days that makes you wish that it was all a dream? Or how about a day that makes you sure that its all just a nightmare? You think that what had happened was you ate something you really shouldn't have and you'll wake up any second none the worse for the wear. Or one that is really bad, one that makes you wish it were a nightmare, and what is worse you know that it isn't. Ryoko was having one of those days right now, but she knew, no matter how hard she wished, no matter how much Washu might twist space and time it was no nightmare.
And that was a nightmare in itself.
The swords hummed with the energy that was being poured into them. The air was tortured with the sounds and smells of the battle. The burnt walls, the melted plastic, and the reek of blood. Ryoko noted that it didn't matter what species you were, blood smelled the same. She also noted, as she stood in pools of it, that Jurain and human blood were the same color. The same color as hers as well for that matter.
Funny how you notice things like this.
It was also rather ironic, she thought, that both she and Ayeka not only had the same color of blood, but would die together as well.
Ryoko spared a quick glance over to where the corpse of the first princess of Jurai had fallen. 'Neither one of us got him,' she thought sadly, 'And now because of our folly all of us pay the price.'
She spared one last look at her friends, or what was left of them. A hundred memories ran through her head. Memories of a better time.
Mihoshi, an annoyance to be sure, but still, there was something about her. All of them thought that Mihoshi was an airhead, a no brainer, but with the top part of her skull sliced off, Ryoko could see that she did have a brain, or at least what was left of it, most having been splattered on the wall. The girl's blind luck didn't save her this time.
Kiyone, one of the most honorable people that she ever knew. Honor didn't mean much when you have a 5-foot section of a support beam sticking through your chest.
Yosho, of everyone, Ryoko just could not actually believe that he was dead. All that training and power that he had, the control, the wisdom. He should still be alive, not riddled with the exploded remains of his tree.
Sasami, Ryoko blocked the sight out, she just couldn't think about the young girl. Never given a chance to grow up, not even Tsunami was able to help her, for the first time since the accident, Sasami had been alone. And now she was dead, the light gone from her eyes. Killed by
Ayeka, her enemy until now. They should have worked together, been friends. It was Ayeka's shield that saved Ryoko's life for a few minutes longer. But at the cost of hers.
Washu, her mother, a mother she had never known. All powerful she seemed. And yet, Ryoko finally knew just how much Washu had loved her, and how the being separated pained her. More, perhaps, than the gash that ran from head to navel, splitting the genius in twain.
A shriek, cut off in the middle tore the air. Something, a bloody something was tossed at her. Ryoko caught it automatically. It took her a few minutes to realize just what it was. A foot, a paw actually. The blood covered most of it, but she could still make out what might have been brown and white fur. Then she knew, by a sudden empty spot in her very soul, that Ryo-Ohki was no more.
"I heard that those are good luck," her killer said, "I think you'll need it."
Ryoko looked at the being in front of her, "Go to hell," she said.
It smiled, "I think not. After all, doesn't the name 'Tenchi' mean heaven and earth?"
"You are not Tenchi!" Ryoko screamed at the think in front of her, the thing wearing the body and the face of her beloved.
"Oh but I am," it said smiling, "After all, only Tenchi could do this." He held out his hand and formed the Light Hawk Sword, and slowly, taking great pleasure in it, ran Ryoko through.
Before:
Tenchi awoke gasping, drenched in sweat. His sheets damp and plastered to his body. The dream, that horrible, dream. Tenchi was not sure which one was worse, seeing his friends killed like that, or the unholy joy he took in seeing them killed.
"I must be reading too many of those horror stories," he said to himself.
"Tenchi-nichan!" Sasami's cheerful voice came from outside his door, "Breakfast is ready!"
"I'll be right there Sasami-chan," Tenchi said.
Tenchi got up and dressed, still trying to shake off the effects of the nightmare. At breakfast, even Mihoshi noticed that Tenchi seemed out of sorts.
"Tenchi-nichan, what's wrong?" Sasami asked, concern in her voice.
"Oh it's nothing, I just didn't sleep well," Tenchi replied.
Sasami obviously wanted to ask more questions, but was stalled by the arrival of the most wanted space pirate, and the first princess of Jurai. Ayeka and Ryoko came down stairs fighting, as usual, as to whom would sit next to Tenchi.
"Now listen here you royal pain, Tenchi's mine!" Ryoko declared.
"Humph, Lord Tenchi does not want to have anything to do with such common street trash like you," Ayeka said, her nose two feet in the air.
Both women glomped on Tenchi, each demanding that he tell the other to go away.
"Shut"
Mihoshi tried to intervene between the two, only making things worse as Ayeka and Ryoko turned on her.
"UP!!!!" Tenchi roared, "Just shut up, I have had enough of the two of you to last a lifetime."
Ryoko and Ayeka paused, shock written clearly on their faces. Even Ryo-Ohki stopped eating to myaii questionably at Tenchi.
"Tenchi?" Ryoko started hesitantly.
"Just, I'm going to the fields now." With that, Tenchi spun around and left the house.
Behind him, the sounds of battle started again. Behind him, Sasami looked on with worry. Behind him, was the light, ahead, darkness.
Tenchi awoke from the nightmare again. He could still feel the faltering beat of Ryoko's heart as it shuttered down the length of his sword. He could also feel the joy he had in it, the desire to tear her corpse into ribbons. It had been three days since his temper tantrum at breakfast. The rest of the household had walked around on tip toes after that. He sighed, perhaps it would be best if he had a few days away from everyone. Come to think of it, his grandfather had wanted to talk with him.
Tenchi packed his bag quietly; the last thing he wanted was to have to deal with the others. Knowing them, most, if not all, would decide to tag along, the more the merrier after all. A slight sound behind him announced Ryoko's entrance into his room.
"Tenchi, where are you going?" she asked.
Tenchi sighed, he opened his mouth to explain that he was leaving for a few days, but that's not what came out.
"Away from you," he said.
Behind him, he felt Ryoko stiffen.
"Tenchi," she whispered softly, sadly.
He turned to her, trying to repair the damage, but she was already gone. He sighed, it looked like he would have to wait a bit to go, this needed to be taken care of first.
'Why?' asked a voice, 'Let the bitch go, she's no use.'
Tenchi shrugged, Ryoko would come to him sooner or later, why should he strain himself for her? For any of them? Picking up his bag, Tenchi left the house, heading up to his grandfather's shrine. Deep within him, he felt something cry out, but it was probably just the snack that Ayeka made him eat last night.
Tenchi screamed as he came awake. The nightmare found him even on the holy ground of the Masaki Shrine. He could still smell the blood, still hear the screams, and still remember the sound of his laughter as he killed his friends, his family.
"Tenchi, what's wrong?" Yosho asked.
"It's nothing Grandfather, just a nightmare," Tenchi replied. For a moment, just a moment, he saw the riddled body of his grandfather. Tenchi shook his head, trying to clear the memory of it.
Yosho looked at Tenchi with concern, "Perhaps after practices, you should visit Washu," he said, "If it's a bug, she'll know how to fix it."
"I'm ok Grandfather, really, I'm just not sleeping well" Tenchi said.
"Perhaps, but then it might be wise to"
"I said I was ok!" Tenchi shouted. Yosho actually backed up a step. He narrowed his eyes.
"I guess you are right after all, sleep well Tenchi." With that, Yosho left the room.
The next day three concerned people met where reality was twisted to the delight of a 20,000-year-old mind with a 12-year-olds sense of humor.
Yosho, calmly sipping tea started, "Tenchi is not Tenchi," he said.
Sasami looked at him with some annoyance, "That much is clear, why must you state the obvious?"
"Because my dear Tsunami, all old men must have their fun."
Washu sighed, "Do you two mind? Lord Tenchi is not himself, now why, and how did it happen?"
"Tenchi-nichan was complaining of bad dreams," Sasami said, "He never told me what they were about."
Yosho nodded, "Last night he had the same nightmare. This morning, he came close to killing me at practices."
"I've looked through Ryoko's memories as well, Tenchi told her off the other day, she's been in a state of depression ever since then," Washu added, "But that still does not answer the question of why is he acting this way, and who's controlling him?"
"Washu-chan, if you wanted to know, why didn't you just ask?"
Ryoko, Mihoshi, Ayeka, and Kiyone had gathered in the living room to talk, the subject seemed to be Tenchi.
Kiyone frowned, "And he just blew up? No reason at all?" she asked.
Ryoko nodded, "It just wasn't like my Tenchi."
"Hold it Ryoko! Since when has Lord Tenchi been yours?" Ayeka yelled, leaping to her feet.
Kiyone sighed, 'Here we go again,' she thought. She opened her mouth then stopped.
A rumbling could be heard. It was low, like the sound of an avalanche from a long ways away. It was coming from the doorway to Washu's lab.
"Now what is she up too?" Ryoko asked in disgust.
The rumbling increased, now it started to sound like someone was ripping the pipes out of the walls.
"Ano Kiyone?"
Kiyone sighed, "Yes Mihoshi?"
"Why is the door glowing like that?"
"Huh?" Kiyone took a closer look at the door leading to Washu's lab; it was indeed glowing. "Clear out now!" Kiyone yelled.
The other three looked at her blankly. Following the laws of physics, the door bulged, the exploded. Shards of the wooden door shot out at break neck speeds. Most bounced off of the shields thrown up by Ayeka and Ryoko. The rest shot through whatever was in their way, walls, windows, furniture, and people. Nobuyuki came home for the last time. Of course it is hard to go to work with a large shard of wood embedded in your forehead.
Inside the darkened lab, something moved. Mihoshi and Kiyone drew their guns, Ayeka summoned her battle armor and Ryoko formed her sword. Nothing moved, nothing made a sound.
"Hey Washu!" Ryoko called out.
No answer was heard.
"Mom!" she tried again.
Still, nothing moved, no answer came.
Ryoko looked at Ayeka and Kiyone, "Any ideas?" she asked.
In the doorway, Washu appeared.
"Miss Washu, what did you do? Lord Tenchi's father has been killed!" Ayeka said.
Washu made no answer.
"Hey Mom, what's going on?"
Washu turned to look at her daughter. Ryoko was surprised to see tears in her eyes. Then slowly, like someone unzipped her, she split in half.
"What the hell?" Ryoko shouted.
"Funny you should put it that way."
It moved with the speed of darkness, a dark ball that grabbed them. It ate them, it shut out the light.
When Ryoko awoke, she awoke to screaming. Looking up, she saw someone slowly slicing the top of Mihoshi's head off. An animal scream of rage sounded out behind her, turning, she saw Kiyone, her face drawn back with hate, changing her partner's killer.
The killer turned, dropping Mihoshi's body, it's blood seeping into the floor like thick red paint. Ryoko refused to remember how many times she had done that to people. Time seemed to slow down, she noted that Yosho was dead, along with Washu. Kiyone, still insane with hate charged the person who killed Mihoshi. That person dropped her, and started to turn. Mihoshi's blood splattered everywhere. She didn't look good as a red head one part of Ryoko's brain said. The murderer finished his turn, the blue beam of his sword coming into view. Ryoko's heart constricted, "No," she whispered.
Tenchi calmly picked up a support beam and shoved it through the charging Kiyone's chest. Kiyone faltered, and stared at the beam sticking out of her body. As soon as Tenchi let go, the weight dragged her forward, dropping her to her knees.
Tenchi smiled, "Now that is the proper position for you," he said.
"No," Ryoko repeated again.
Tenchi turned to her, "Awake are you? Good, perhaps you can stop the brat from screaming while I tend to her sister." He tossed a bleeding, broken, bundle at her.
It was Sasami.
Sasami clung to Ryoko, it took a few minutes to make out what she was screaming about.
"I can't feel her!"
"Shhhh," Ryoko said, wrapping her arms around the little girl, "Can't feel who?"
"Tsunami, I can't feel Tsunami. I I I'm alone!" Sasami said in anguish.
More screaming was heard. Ryoko looked up to see Ten that thing pumping into Ayeka, but it wasn't him, it was Tenchi-ken, the sword. From Ayeka's screams, Ryoko guessed that it was on a bit.
In her arms, Sasami gave a shutter. Looking down at her, Ryoko saw blood spill out of her mouth. The light dimmed and went out in her eyes. Her last words, "I'm so alone!"
With a scream that was one part rage and one part defiance, Ryoko hurled an energy spear at the thing. A Light Hawk Wing blocked the spear.
The thing turned to her, "I was saving you for last, but if you're going to be a nuisance" it said and launched an energy blast of its own. Ryoko said good bye.
It was deflected off of a Jurai shield.
It looked back at Ayeka, "So, interfering with my fun ne?" It rammed Tenchi-ken to the hilt inside Ayeka. She didn't even get a chance to scream as its blue beam shot through her. It jerked the sword up through her body, she fell dead at its feet.
Inside the Now.
Tenchi cringed in horror as he ripped Ayeka apart. Chained to a wall inside his own mind, Tenchi could only look on as his friends, his family was killed using his body. He cringed again has he heard himself laugh at the pain and suffering he caused.
"Enjoying the show Prince of Jurai?" The being asked. It was small, and hard to make out. Sometimes it looked like KAIN, sometimes, a demented version of Washu. But it was his captor.
"No?" It said, "Well I'm sure you will. I have big plans you for you kid, but first we'll play a game, its called global genocide. I want you to kill, personally, everyone on this planet.
Tenchi winced at that, then screamed in anger has it used his body to tear Ryo-Ohki apart like one would a chicken. He strained against his bonds, but they held fast.
"Naughty naughty Tenchi, I'm playing now, you can play latter."
Tenchi looked out of his eyes, he started fighting against his chains even more as the thing made him run Ryoko through with the Light Hawk Sword.
"No!!!!" he screamed and tore the chains from the bindings. The thing turned.
As it had for Ryoko, time seemed to slow down. The thing turned and sighed. Tenchi, enraged and insane with anger, summoned the Light Hawk Sword.
"I guess we can't play then," as it said that Tenchi brought the sword down upon it, "I do hope you enjoyed the nightmare Prince of Jurai."
Tenchi felt a wild hope, a nightmare, it was all just another nightmare. As the thing dissolved away, Tenchi felt himself slam back into his body.
The Now:
Tenchi awoke. Breathing a sigh of relief, he opened his eyes.
"T Tenchi?" Ryoko called in a weak voice. Tenchi's eyes snapped open. Ryoko was impaled on his sword.
"Tenchi, is that really you?" Ryoko called out again.
Tenchi caught her and lowered her down gently. He cradled her in his arms, trying not to think about what he did. "Yes Ryoko, it's really me."
Ryoko tried to smile, but the pain was too great, "Tenchi, I love you," she whispered, and passed on.
Tenchi heard another whisper, "I hope you enjoyed your nightmare last Prince of Jurai, because reality is much worse."
Have you ever had a bad day? I mean a really, really bad day? One so bad it makes you wish that it was a nightmare? Masaki Tenchi, last Prince of Jurai was having one of those days. He decided to end it.
End.
C&C is wanted.
