Good point; I overlooked that. But I think it can be easily
explained: If he was using telepathy, and someone noticed (remember,
the entire house is full of Espers), that would give away his game; so
he can't use it. In fact, that helps explain why he's so nervous,
too. He's used to relying on telepathy, and now he has to do without
it.
But he did exactly this (use telepathy) at the wedding and that
room was also full of ESPers.
At the weding he was only using it on Madoka, and none of the other
Espers were looking for it being used so they missed it. However if he uses
Telepathy to stay aware of the mood of the croud, some of the other Espers
would probably be able to sense the telepathy even without looking because it
would be directed at them. This would make them suspicious and they'd quickly
realise that Kazuya was the source.
