Chapter 10- Arrangements to be made
Jude sat at a dimly lit table, he didn't know how he had got there, or
where he was. Some small part of his mind told him this was a dream, but
he didn't pay too much attention to it.
He looked at the table and blinked as it was suddenly covered with odd
sheets of paper and colored maps. Dice of all shapes and sizes were in
piles at a few places along the table. He looked up from the dice to see
that each pile had a person attached to it. He couldn't make out any faces
though.
Some dim part of his mind matched this scene up with a memory of a past
role-playing game session. He mildly cursed that same dim part of his mind
that didn't remember enough to tell him who he played with or what they
looked like.
Someone from behind him placed a sheet of paper in front of him. He
looked at it and saw that it was a character sheet for some game he
couldn't recall the name to. The person behind him said, "Okay, here's
your sheet, everyone else has been playing for a while so you'll have to
hurry your character creation a bit.
"First," the voice said, "You'll need a name."
Although he hadn't noticed it before a radio seemed to be playing music in
the background. "Hey Jude" was playing, and he had always liked the
Beatles so why not? He penciled in "Jude" as his first name.
"That's it?" the voice asked, "Just Jude?"
His originality run out already, Jude merely wrote "Smith" as his last name.
"Jude Smith," the voice, who Jude decided to term as well, the voice,
spoke once more, "You are aware that almost everyone else will have either
Japanese names or be named after common bathroom toiletries don't you?"
"Yeah," Jude said, "So what, he'll stick out more that way."
"That's your choice I guess, I don't think it'll clash too much with
everyone else's characters."
Jude looked up at everyone around the table and saw almost everyone he had
met so far. Ryoga was to his right and Ranma to his left. Akane, Nabiki,
and Kasumi all sat to Ranma's left. Ukyo, Shampoo, Soun, and Genma were
all seated to Ryoga's right. In between Genma and Kasumi there was an
empty chair, Jude figured that would be where the owner of the voice would
be speaking when the game was on.
"Alright, since everyone else has been going for a while we need to have a
way to toss you into the middle of everything to see what happens. There's
a few ways to do that really, you can be related to someone, although with
a name like yours that doesn't fit too well."
"Nah," Jude said, "How about something else?"
"Well, there's also the old fiancee bit, in the same vein as this is the
revenge bit. Either you're engaged to someone or you want to kill them,
how about those?"
"Hmm, I don't know, those have been done already haven't they? Seems like
everyone at this table has used one of those to hop in haven't they?"
"True, anything else is up to you really, what do you think?"
Five minutes and a car accident later Jude was in the game.
"Why do I have amnesia again?" he asked.
"What was the question again?" the voice replied.
Jude thought for a moment, "Weird, I forgot, I think I asked why I didn't
have any skills selected."
"Ah, those'll come later, when we want we can make up some of the more
mundane ones, also your character will have an extended period of time with
Ryoga before getting into the real game, so you'll have some basic skills
out of that as well."
Jude nodded, that sounded reasonable to him, "So what's next on the
role-playing schedule?"
The voice didn't reply for a moment. The sound of paper flipping could be
heard from across the table. Jude looked up to see that someone was
sitting at the seat between Genma and Kasumi, although he couldn't really
make out who it was.
"Ah, it looks to be a desert encounter," the person at the end of the
table said, "You and Ryoga come across someone in the desert who's dying of
thirst, what do you do?"
Jude and Ryoga played out the scenario and were rewarded for their good
Samaritan act with rather nifty magic rings.
"So what does this mean in game terms?" Jude asked.
"See that box marked Languages (Spoken/Written)' on your character sheet?"
Jude and Ryoga nodded, "Yeah? What about it?" Jude asked.
"Just write All Languages' in there, it'll simplify things in the long run."
Jude and Ryoga did as they were told. "So now what O great and
illustrious master of ceremonies?" Jude queried.
The sound of more pages being flipped carried across the table. The voice
gave an evil chuckle and spoke one word, "Jusenkyo."
Reactions were mixed between the two players. Jude felt a nagging sense
of doom as he knew his game would get quite a bit more complicated after a
trip to the cursed springs of Jusenkyo. Ryoga, on the other hand, was
already cursed, so he had less to lose and more to gain from the trip then
Jude did.
After they both ended up cursed Jude grumbled to himself. "I can't
believe I rolled a frigging 1 on a check to walk to somewhere to go to the
bathroom. Sheesh, talk about bad luck."
The voice spoke up at this point, "Actually, you would have fallen unless
you got a 20, Jusenkyo's magic has some very strict rules."
Jude had the feeling that the owner of the voice was just making that up
and had wanted him cursed to begin with but said nothing. Talking back to
these type people often leads to situations growing worse, he could hear it
now, "Well, looky here, these guys come buy and splash you with water from
a magic bucket, you're stuck in your cursed form now. Plus they want to
marry you! Have fun!" This was followed by maniacal laughter and great
hardship.
"At least I don't turn into a pig anymore," Ryoga said, "Do you know how
many skill checks it takes to heat water with hooves? And don't get me
started on being Lunch' in every country I went to either."
"I suppose you're right," Jude said, "But why do we both look like Ranma?
I thought Nyannichuan was supposed to turn you into a female version of
yourself?"
"Trust me on this one," the voice said, "I've got a plan, besides, three
"Pig-tailed girls" leads to more fun then just one in my book."
"So how should we change our stats to show the different form?" Jude asked.
"Well, lower your strength a couple points, but raise your dexterity and
charisma a few points as well."
"So we're slightly weaker, faster, and good-looking?"
"You got it. These are a helluva lot easier then figuring out the stats
for a "Yak-crane-eel" something or other that they have listed in this
book, believe me."
"Okay," Jude said as he finished writing in his changed stats in brackets
by his normal ones, "What's next? I want to get going you know."
"Well, I had planned on having you role-play the Bakusai Tenketsu
training, along with some other martial arts stuff, but we can do those in
a flashback," the puppet master across the table replied.
"Bakusai Tenketsu?" Jude asked, "How'd my character learn that?"
"Well, a few reasons, Cologne did say it was "the simplest of techniques"
for one. Also Ryoga has a high teaching skill. I've got a few other
reasons tossed in there as well, but those can wait to be revealed later."
"Okay," Jude said, "So how skilled am I from Ryoga's teaching and whatever
other reasons you decide to pull on us?"
"Well, we'll take it on a case-by-case basis for the most part. Just
accept that you can't kick anyone's ass in a second like some of the other
characters and we'll go from there, it'll be a while before you have to
worry too much about your actual skill levels I think."
With that the voice proceeded to lead Ryoga and Jude through their first
day and a half in Nerima, basically where they met most of the other
characters and set up some basis of Character Knowledge' for Jude so his
character would actually know what was being referred to most of the time.
The dream flickered and then Jude was somewhere else. He shook his head
as the images of the gaming session faded from his mind and he looked
around himself.
He saw a sign saying "Welcome to Jusenkyo" and wondered how he had got
back here from the Dojo.
Suddenly someone was behind him, "It's time to wake up," the person said.
With that they shoved Jude headfirst into a nearby spring.
Jude's mind fled back to that fateful night in China. He felt the water
rush around his body, then he felt his head hit into a rock. He watched
his vision grow dim even as his body tingled with the curse's change. His
consciousness slowly slipped away.
***
Jude-chan awoke with a start, the nightmare already fading from her mind.
All that she could piece together was that it ended with her starting to
drown in Nyannichuan on that night weeks ago.
A look at her watch told her it was still quite early in the morning. She
thought about going back to sleep but the memory of her dream dissuaded
her. She looked around for her journal and picked it up.
It brought back all the memories of the previous day. This morning was a
good one for her, she could actually remember everything that had happened
before. She read on regardless of that, habit and caution driving her on.
It wouldn't do to forget something she didn't know she forgot.
After finishing the entry she had made last night she noticed Ryoga was
awake. "Good morning," she said.
"Good morning yourself," Ryoga replied, he looked at her for a moment and
then said, "Didn't you change before you went to sleep?"
Jude-chan looked embarrassed and said, "Well, I did... I just... well...
I walked into the koi pond last night on the way back from the house,
that's all."
Ryoga nodded, "You did that the night before too didn't you?"
"Well, yeah, but it's not my fault the damned thing is right in the path,
I swear it moves just so I walk into it sometimes," Jude-chan frowned a
moment and then remembered what she had been thinking last night.
"Say, Ryoga," she said.
"Yes?"
"What do you think of going to school? I know you didn't before because
of your sense of direction, but what about now?"
"My sense of direction still gets me lost all the time Jude, I'd still
miss more school then I went to anyway."
"Oh come on, I'll be your sense of direction then, I promise you won't get
lost as much as you think you would."
"I guess you're right about that, but why do you want to go to school
anyway?"
"Well, for one thing, it'd be something to do, for another you need school
to get anywhere later in life."
"I guess, but it's been so long, I don't know how well I'd do going back
to school."
Jude-chan saw that Ryoga still wasn't convinced so she pulled out her
trump card. "Akane will be there," she said.
"A-akane?" Ryoga asked, he smiled and started to stare off into space.
"And you could see her all day if you were in the same school she was in,"
Jude-chan added. She noted that Ryoga was fully in his own world at the
moment.
Ryoga's mind filled with thoughts of being near Akane each and every day
at school and his feet lifted even farther off their mental ground.
Jude-chan decided that Ryoga needed to come back down to earth and thought
of just the thing to do it, "Also," she said, "You could protect her from
Ranma as well, to make sure he doesn't hurt her feelings or anything, you
know?"
The mention of Ranma was enough to cut through Ryoga's blissful imaginings
and he blinked to clear his head. "Alright Jude, that sounds like a good
idea, when do we start?"
"How about today?" Jude-chan replied.
"Okay, I guess better sooner then later huh Jude?"
"Yeah, and speaking of things better done sooner then later, if we enroll
in school we'll need a place to stay as well, any ideas?"
Ryoga thought about that for a while before speaking, "Well, my house is
too far away from here to make staying there and going to school here a
good idea, especially since the longer it is I have to go the more likely
it will be that I get lost. I don't know of anywhere in Nerima besides
here to stay really."
"So you think we should ask Mr. Tendo if we can stay longer then?"
Ryoga nodded, "It seems to be the best place that I can think of at the
moment."
"Hmm, well, it's the only place that comes to mind for me as well,
although that's not saying much," Jude-chan remarked, "We should probably
offer to pay rent as well, it sounds like Ranma and his father are hard on
their budget."
"Yeah, those two seem to have bottomless stomachs," Ryoga said, "And
paying rent would help, we've still got some money left over from the work
we did whenever we stopped long enough to actually do any."
Jude-chan smiled and said, "I hope they don't mind that it's in so many
different currencies."
"I think Nabiki should be able to handle it," Ryoga said.
Jude-chan looked down at herself and then said, "Well, I'm off to get some
hot water, we could probably talk to Mr. Tendo about staying at the same
time, if he's up that is."
Ryoga agreed and the two went out to see what the day would bring.
***
Later that morning Ranma, Akane, Nabiki, Ryoga, and Jude were walking
toward Furinkan High. The request for housing had been reviewed by the
Tendo household and had been tentatively agreed upon. Each of the members
of said household had varying reactions toward the thought of Ryoga and
Jude as guests for an extended stay.
Akane was happy, she liked Ryoga because she thought he was one of the few
people that could be counted on to be a friend and not have any romantic
inclinations toward her or Ranma like the rest of the people that started
showing up when Ranma had arrived. Sure he wanted to kill Ranma
occasionally but, then again, so did she, she was sure that things would
work themselves out. As to Jude, well, he seemed a nice enough fellow, and
the fact that he seemed neutral in the whole fiancee-rival area was also a
bonus.
Ranma had mixed feelings about the arrangements. On the one hand that
meant he had to put up with Ryoga more often then he usually had to before.
On the other, his best sparring partner was close at hand and he could get
better in the arts. He also figured that having Ryoga around as a human
was much better then having him around as P-chan.
Nabiki was quite happy. Not only did she now have three potential models
for her picture taking activities but they were paying rent! If only she
could get the Saotomes to pay as well she thought, then the money would
really pour in.
Kasumi was resigned to the fact that she would have to heat up twice as
many kettles of hot water but other then that she was glad to have more
people to look after. She would have to cook a little more then she
usually did but with Ranma and his father around she was already quite used
to cooking large amounts of food.
Soun and Genma had been reluctant to agree at first. Soun because his
house might not take the extra people and Genma because the two boys were
setting the bad precedent of actually paying rent. They almost didn't when
Genma thought of something. Since Jude hadn't been able to get any hot
water before asking about staying longer he was still a she. Genma noticed
this and an idea came to mind.
He took Soun aside and said, "Look, those two are cursed like Ranma right?"
Soun nodded, "Yes Saotome they are, that means my hot water heater will
have even more stress when they stay here."
"Listen to me for a moment Tendo, what do they turn into?"
"Well, young girls, you know that Saotome."
"Ah, yes Tendo, but they turn into _pretty_ young girls don't they?"
"Saotome, you shouldn't think of your son that way, it's, just not right."
"Never mind that Tendo, think, who does think of Ranma that way?"
"Ah," Soun said, his eyes lit up as he saw where his old friend was
leading, "The master is quite fond of Ranma's female form isn't he?"
"Yes he is Tendo, and with two more people that turn into the exact same
form, why, he won't have any time to bother us at all."
"That's a wonderful idea Saotome," Soun said, he clapped his friend on the
back and they both went back to where the two were standing.
"Very well," Soun had said, "You two can stay, talk to Nabiki about how
much you should pay and we'll clear out a guest room for you two to sleep."
That brings us back to the here and now where the two girls and three
guys, who happen to turn into girls when they get splashed with cold water,
were walking to the Furinkan high school grounds.
Ranma was walking on top of the fence with Akane walking beside him on the
ground. Nabiki was negotiating rent with Jude while he kept an eye on Ryoga.
Nabiki stopped talking for a moment and seemed to listen for something.
Jude listened as well and could hear the faint sound of a bell ringing. It
was a small bell, much like the kind that could be found on a bicycle. It
was coming closer every moment.
Nabiki quietly stepped away from being directly behind Ranma and Jude
followed her. Soon he was amazed to see Shampoo somehow leap her bike off
the ground and land, perfectly balanced, upon Ranma and the fence he was
walking upon.
"Nihao Ranma!" she said, "You go on date with Shampoo today yes?"
Ranma mumbled something unintelligible, which was perfectly reasonable
since he had his face planted into a fence at the time.
Shampoo hopped off Ranma and landed on the sidewalk. When Ranma fell off
the fence she promptly glomped onto him saying, "Well Ranma? You want go
on date with Shampoo or not?"
Akane started to glow with anger for a moment and began to advance toward
Ranma, then she stopped and calmed down. She looked to Ryoga and said,
"Come on Ryoga, I'll take you to school while Ranma goes on his _date_."
Ryoga, who had been almost ready to attack Ranma on his own for acting
like this in front of Akane, quickly agreed and happily walked off with
Akane to the school.
Nabiki began to leave as well, "Are you coming Jude?" she asked. She
wanted to continue negotiating rent but she also wanted to get to the
school to contact her agents and find out anything she needed to know
before the day began.
"Uh, no," Jude said, "Actually I kind of have to talk to Shampoo about
something that happened yesterday, but I'll catch up in a bit, okay?"
Nabiki wondered what it was that needed to be discussed between Shampoo
and Jude but she knew that she would find out sooner or later so she left
for the school.
Shampoo, seeing that Akane wouldn't interrupt her, increased her hold on
Ranma happily. Ranma, who was now beginning to have trouble breathing,
managed to extricate himself after a while.
"I have to get to school Shampoo," he said, he didn't particularly want to
go to school but he also didn't want to give her any ideas. Before she
could say anything he was gone down the road to school.
Shampoo frowned that Ranma had once again denied her and was about to go
back to work when someone spoke up, "Shampoo?" a voice said.
She turned to see Jude standing behind her, "Oh, is you," she said, "What
you want?"
"Well, I was wondering if your great-grandmother was still pushing this
engagement thing, or if she had changed her mind or anything."
"Great-grandmother still say we to marry if Shampoo no marry Ranma,"
Shampoo replied. She remembered her great-grandmother stating this very
clearly when she had talked to her earlier in the morning.
"Well, is there any way to cancel it? I mean, if there's a law that says
we have to marry isn't there one that can say we can't?"
Shampoo thought about it for a moment, "There might be, Shampoo look when
get back to caf, till then we ignore engagement yes?"
Jude nodded and said, "Okay, I'll stop by after school and see what you've
found out then."
"Shampoo see you then," Shampoo replied. She hopped back on her bike and
sped off into the distance at high speed.
Jude looked to see that no one was around and decided to hurry the rest of
the way toward school.
***
Akane and Ryoga waited at the gates of the school for everyone else to
arrive. Akane had grumbled about "Waiting for that jerk Ranma," and Ryoga
had agreed, but then he had pointed out that Nabiki and Jude were behind
them as well.
Surprisingly enough, it was Ranma who reached them first. He had ran the
entire distance to catch up to them and passed Nabiki a block away from the
school. He had seen Akane leave with Ryoga and he didn't want them to be
alone for any period of time.
"Where's Jude?" Ryoga asked as Ranma arrived.
Ranma blinked, he had thought that Jude had left with everyone else. "Uh,
I dunno," he said, "I guess he's back with Shampoo or somethin'."
Just then Nabiki arrived, "If you're looking for Jude he said something
about needing to talk to Shampoo about something so I imagine that that
would be where he was now."
"Did he say what he wanted to talk to her about?" Akane asked, she was
wary of anything that had to do with Shampoo.
"Probably about the engagement," Ryoga said before he could stop himself.
"WHAT?" everyone asked as one.
They listened in surprise as Ryoga sheepishly related the tale of how Jude
had come to be engaged to Shampoo on his first day in Nerima.
Their reactions were, to put it lightly, mixed. Akane felt sorry for him,
she knew that unwanted engagements only served to complicate a person's
life. Nabiki began to think of ways that she could perhaps profit from this
information and also thought that perhaps it might lead to a way to lessen
the complications for her sister if Shampoo was married to someone other
then Ranma. Ranma, on the other hand, thought that the whole situation was
quite hilarious. He sympathized with Jude but he was still glad to see it
happening to someone else. It would be better, he thought, if it was Ryoga
that had his life messed up, but to see someone other then him have things
get stranger was almost always a good change for him.
Ranma was about to say something to that affect when Jude arrived.
When Jude saw everyone odd expressions and Ryoga's somewhat sheepish look
he wondered what had just happened.
"What's up?" he asked.
Akane and Ranma started to answer but Nabiki beat them to it, "We were
just thinking that you and Shampoo would make a cute couple Jude,
congratulations on your engagement."
Jude paused for a moment and then said, "Ah, I see, well, it's not like it
was my idea or anything, it was that old, whatever she is, that thought it
up, Shampoo and I had nothing to do with it."
"Of course you didn't," Nabiki replied. She looked to her watch and then
headed into the school yard saying, "Well, I must be off, I've some
business to do before school starts."
Ranma spoke up then, "Well Jude," he said, "I feel for ya, I really do,
but it is good to see something like this happen to someone that ain't me
for a change, that's for sure."
"Come on Ranma," Akane said, "We'll be late for school if we stay out here
much longer." With that the two followed the same path Nabiki had just taken.
"Well Ryoga," Jude said, "I guess we should head in there as well, do you
know anything about what's involved in registering for school in these parts?"
"Well, we should just go to the main office and talk to someone there, I'm
sure it won't be that much trouble," Ryoga replied.
They were about to enter the school yard when they heard many voices cry
out, "RANMA, HOW DARE YOU MARRY AKANE?!?" They were, needless to say,
quite surprised.
The two walked in to see Ranma and Akane making fierce denials that they
had ever or will ever be married while somehow also managing to look
resigned as if they had already done this many times in the past. They
were surrounded by what looked to be almost all their classmates, all
clamoring for more information and generally being a nuisance of themselves.
Some of the more intelligent students made their way to Nabiki where they
could get accurate information, albeit, for a price.
It was with great caution that Jude and Ryoga made their way through the
crowds to the school building itself. Neither of them were really used to
being in crowds, much of their wanderings had been in unpopulated areas.
They met Ukyo at the door, she was frowning at the circus around Ranma and
Akane and muttering something about, "It better not be true," when the two
greeted her.
"Hi Ukyo," Ryoga said.
Jude seconded Ryoga's hello and added, "How've you been since yesterday?"
"Hello Ryoga, Jude, what are you two doing here?" she asked as she turned
her attention away from the fiasco going on in the school-grounds.
*We're on a mission from God,* Jude replied. Noting Ukyo's blank look he
decided that she hadn't seen "The Blues Brothers" and made yet another
mental note to cut down on obscure references. "Actually, we're here to
enroll in school, gotta start sometime eh?"
Ukyo's blank look cleared up and she smiled, "I guess I'll see you two
around then huh? Maybe you'll end up in class with Ranma-honey and I."
"Akane too," Ryoga added.
"Yeah," Ukyo repeated blankly, "Akane too, mustn't forget her." She
didn't like to be reminded that Ranma had other fiancees then her, even if
it was one she was able to get along with most of the time like Akane.
Seeing Ukyo's mood darken Jude changed the subject, "Well, we'd best get
going if we're going to enroll, where's the main office or whatever it's
called so we can get it over with Ukyo?"
Ukyo gave them directions just as another voice could be heard from outside.
"Saotome, I shall not stand thy marriage to the beauteous Akane Tendo!
Release her and the pigtailed goddess to me lest I be forced to smite thee!"
Jude looked back briefly to see a guy in an outfit straight out of an old
samurai movie waving a wooden sword around and quoting Shakespeare.
Thinking that it would be best to have only believed six impossible things
before noon instead of seven he quickly ignored what was going on and made
his way toward where Ukyo had said the office was.
"A mission from god'?" Ryoga asked Jude as they made their way around the
corner.
Jude shrugged, "It was from a movie, and it just seemed the thing to say
at the time."
"I've noticed you do that a lot, say odd things like that I mean."
"Well, is it my fault my only clear memories are from books, movies, TV,
and a few other things?" Jude replied, "Besides, if they knew what I was
talking about it would be funny."
Ryoga gave Jude a doubting look as if to say, "Even if they did know what
it was it wouldn't be funny."
Jude noticed the look and said, "Well, they'd still react better then
being confused right?"
Just then they reached the main office of the school and entered.
"Uh, Ryoga, I was leading wasn't I?" Jude asked.
"Yeah, you were Jude, why do you ask?"
"Because, if we're in the office, why are there palm trees and a beach?"
--------------
Well, there it was, any comments that you can possibly think of are wanted
and appreciated.
I've also got a few areas that I'm wondering about so here they are.
1) As always tell me if you think I've ventured too far into inexplicable
OOC-ness, I think I've got a decent handle on the characters but I may be
wrong.
2) Tell me what you thought about the dream sequence, I'm knocking around
the idea of tossing in quite a few of these, some odd, some funny, and some
that actually contribute to the plot.
3) There is no third thing! (Actually I was wondering what you thought
about the obscure (and not so obscure) references I've tossed in here and
there throughout the fic. A beatles song, a stephen king novel, lord of
the rings, star wars, the blues brothers, and monty python, there may be a
few that i missed, but anyway, do they disrupt anything? Do they add to
the story? What do you think?)
That's all that I can think of at the moment. Chapter 11 is being worked
on now, but it has a ways to go before it'll be ready. I'm planning on
covering most of the first day of school, if not all of it. So it may be
out in two weeks or a week or more, sometime before chapter 12 at least.
