Hmm, there seems to be one thing that many of the authors with a bit more
seniority than the rest are missing.  I think what Razorclaw was trying
to say about the length of time a fic has been around is that when you
guys and gals started, the sheer volume of fics out there on the net was
a LOT less than it is now.  Obviously, that also means less followers of
fanfiction, but I don't think that makes too great of a difference. 
Since there was so little material out there, compared to now, people
were bound to be able to devote more time and attention on what was
coming out.  

This isn't to say that any of the work received undue attention;
Perry-san is right -- everyone had to start somewhere.  But what I'm
saying is that the older authors had a much less competition.  For me
personally, I find it very hard to keep up with all the fics that are
being posted daily.  If I'm lucky, I'll take an all-nighter trying to
keep up with everything, but more often than not, I just have to junk a
few to keep my mailbox from overflowing.  I guess this goes to your
point, Razorclaw, about recognition.  Yeah, I admit, I'm much more likely
to keep an author's work if I recognize and have read stories by this
particular author than to read something by someone I've never heard of. 
And usually the reason I'll go and look for an author is because he/she
has been mentioned by another author who's work I read or else someone
has a link to his/her homepage.  Again, name recognition.  This isn't
always the case, but often is.  

Anyway, sorry for adding to the spam, but I just thought I'd point that
out.  Ja, mata ne.
