To some extent; DnR wouldn't be as popular as it is if it hadn't been
one of the first continuations out there, IMO. OTOH, these works
wouldn't have caught on if they hadn't had something going for them, no

True enough... but I have noticed a mild bit of "elitism" when it comes
to new authors striking out on the ML. The old-schoolers get a lot more
C&C and attention than anyone else, whereas a lot of newer stuff goes
completely ignored.
Maybe... but I made a big splash with my first 'fic, so I think it's more likely
a case of "practice makes perfect". Older writers will be more practiced,
because they've been at it longer, but that doesn't prevent a newbie starting
with a popular story. It's just not very likely.
I also notice some elitist sentiments (mild sometimes, others not)
regarding folks who are familiar with the manga version of a given series
as opposed to the anime. There's a certain amount of looking-down-the-
nose at the ones who know it from anime... especially for Ranma 1/2, but
that's really another story entirely.
Well, RT had no input into the anime and therefore any non-manga-based
anime episodes are really doujinshi... which means a form of fanfic, except
they got paid for it. The Ranma 1/2 manga is the pure, undiluted canon.
There are other series where the manga postdates the anime. For example,
the primary creative force for Evangelion was in the *anime*; the manga is an
*adoption* of the story line by a different author. I find the manga more enjoyable,
but that's just me. Canon for Eva is the anime.
Then there are series like Sailor Moon, where the primary creator worked on
the manga but it was done simultaneously with the anime, and Tenchi Muyou,
which has (AFAIK, at last count) 5 somewhat-incompatible universes, one of
which is the manga.
Someone said that Ranma 1/2 anime is less expensive than the manga... rubbish,
I say. 38 volume of tankouban at Y600 each isn't an awful lot... particularly when
the Ranma 1/2 LD box set goes for Y260,000 last time I saw it advertised. Of
course, it helps if you can speak Japanese.... :-)
(BTW, the previous paragraph is at least *somewhat* a joke... for the humour
impaired.)
