This is a new one on me.  Making it a hypothetical situation makes the
tense plural?

No, it makes the mood subjunctive (as in "If I were you").  On the other
hand, not too many people these days have even HEARD of the subjunctive.
Use it correctly?  Give us a break ... personally I learned all about
subjunctives in Latin class, and have been steadily forgetting them ever
since...
