Lt. Cmdr Shinobu Miyake: Is always very justified when she strikes her
    commanding officer.

Communications officer Ran:  Has the best stocked wardrobe on the warship.

Marines Megane, Chibi, Perm and Kakugari: Unlikely to fulfill their dreams
    of glory under Captain Ataru.

Doctor Cherry:  Says Buddhist prayers while performing triage.

Ships's nurse Sakura: Which is more out of character for an android
    assassin?   Being a shinto priestess or falling for her target?

Pilot Tobimaro Mizonokouji: Hates girls, so he has to put up with
Shutaro's twin little sisters, pilot trainees.

Other members of the United Planets Space Patrol:

Admiral Onsen-Mark:  Always in hot water because of Ataru's
irresponsibility.

The Oni Empire:

Empress Lum: promoted to the throne after her father's mysterious death.

Captain Rei: Is keeping a close eye on Ataru, but his reports leave much
to be desired.

I can't do this.  The power of a fusion is leveraging the differences
between the series to show their similarities.  That doesn't work if there
isn't any differences.
