Open on blackness.
SYLIA (V.O.)
A mother should never outlive her
children ...
A shot of a nuclear blast erupting from the top of GENOM tower like a
volcanic eruption.
Quick cut to a rotating shot around SYLIA, wearing a long blue trenchcoat,
staring up at the statue of the Knight Sabers.
NARRATOR
A woman with questions about her own
conduct ...
Cut to SYLIA being handed a file from RAYE.
RAYE (V.O.)
We want a civillian to investigate
to see if the candidate actually
deserves the Medal.
SYLIA opens the file, and looks down at a black and white photo of NORIKO
TAKAYA.
NARRATOR
.... on a mission to examine that of
others ...
SYLIA looks up, shocked.
SYLIA
This is a child. <beat> You sent
*children* into *battle*?
RAYE looks at her with a neutral expression.
RAYE
We were younger than she was when we
started. And she *volunteered*.
Cut to a shot of the Gunbuster grappling with the an alien mothership.
There is a vast explosion.
Cut to the bridge of the Exelion, as all the blood runs out of ADMIRAL
TASHIRO's face.
ADMIRAL TASHIRO
My God what have we done ...
Cut to SYLIA staring up at the charred, melted, broken, yet still
magnificent hull of the Gunbuster, surrounded by scaffolding and workers on
gravitic platforms. There is a haunted look on her face.
NARRATOR
... and a determination to discover
the truth ...
Cut to SYLIA speaking a silent shot of SYLIA speaking with JUNG FREUD,
wearing a monk's robes, who does not meet her gaze.
Cut to SYLIA speaking with KOICHIRO OTA, who gazes back at her from behind
his thick glasses.
Cut to SYLIA, looking *very* angry, speaking to KAZUMI AMANO, who stares
forward without expression. (SYLIA is standing on her right side,
speaking directly into her ear.)
SYLIA
<whispered> I *will* find out what
happened up there, if I have to drag
her soul, *kicking* and *screaming*,
back to testify on her own behalf.
So *start* *talking*.
One of KAZUMI's eyes slowly turns to look at SYLIA.
NARRATOR
... no matter the consequences.
Shot of SYLIA fast-loading her DeLameter in the midst of an energy-beam
firefight.
Cut to SYLIA, sitting in a plain cell, being stared at (as though she were
food) by ELLEN RIPLEY, seated across from her.
RIPLEY
<cold> There are no heroes. There
are survivors and there are victims.
*They* understand this.
SYLIA
I choose not to.
Cut to SYLIA, kneeling in the grass of a cemetary on a cloudy day, tracing
the characters on a tombstone:
TAKAYA NORIKO
2929-2945
Cut to darkness. A medal falls in slow motion through the darkness.
MISA (V.O.)
What if it turns out that she wasn't
a hero? What then?
SYLIA (V.O.)
Then she'll be just one more victim.
Cut to black.
