I recently received a rather...how can I put it mildly?...vividly
prosaic reply to the recent posting of "Sailormoon Flash". I am
normally the first, or one of the first, to get on anyone's case
about making a public post of a private response, but I felt the need
to make an exception in this case. I'm withholding the name of the
individual who wrote this, and will not under any circumstances
divulge that name to the curious. I'm not doing this to ridicule, or
to be rude. I'm not even going to interject comments from my reply to
this message. 

The reason I'm posting this rather lengthy message is to make a
point. Comments and criticism are always welcome to any post of a
fanfic on this list (unless I presume too much of some authors), but
people, please keep in mind that fanfic authors want comments that
are relevant to how they can improve a fic, corrections they need to
make, scenes they could expand, change, or remove, and general
fic-related business as that, aside from the odd spam thread which
pops up on the list. 

The following commentary belongs in a thesis on Sailormoon, or at
least in a commentary on a *serious* fanfic, not in a reply to a fic
which is, more or less, intended to be ecchi humor. To be perfectly
frank, anyone who puts this much overanalysis into an 11KB chapter of
a fic such as Sailormoon Flash probably needs to turn off their
computer a little more frequently...

In short, I don't think this is what most of us have in mind when
they ask for C&C:

A most <ahem> unusual crossover. Fusion, I believe the term is. I
suppose a
true understanding of such things will come in time, yes? But that is
not
why I am writing.

Being the die-hard Science Guy that I am, I try and rationalize
everything
which comes my way, even if it is somewhat odd. Now, I realize that
the
Senshi have changed drastically because of a blueprint set down in
some
other series that must be followed, albeit occasionally loosely, but
the
ever-present rational part of my brain began coming up with a
different
explanation.

My own theory on the Sailor Scouts' transformation involves a
space-folded
mediation between their bodies now and their bodies at the time of
the
Silver Millenium. In other words, they gain the knowledge that their
earlier
forms had, having been trained in enchantment and elemental control.
The
fusion is a narrowly focused time length away, which accounts for the
positive correlation between time and increased mystical power on the
part
of the Senshi.

Now...

Over the past century, the average onset of Terran puberty has slowly
but
relatively surely moved up in years. While extrapolation beyond the
fall of
the Silver Millennium is perhaps irrelevant, it can be reasonably
postulated
that the Senshi's temporally displaced counterparts are only now
undergoing
puberty in the time of the Silver Millennium. The abrupt change in
powers
follows an abrupt change in body chemistry.

Further...

The Dread Space Pirate Bailesu has given us a picture of the Senshi's
earlier counterparts as <ahem> rather forward young women. It is not
unreasonable to assume that this mindset will endure through the
absorption
of skills by the present-day Senshi, explaining the rather
flirtatious (some
might say shameless) behavior all five are currently displaying to
one
extent or another.

In addition...

The focus of the Silver Millenium counterparts' training can be
postulated
to change with the "coming of age". Instead of the earlier and mostly
theoretical elemental manipulation they were taught, they are now
learning
to apply their elemental powers to a more practical use. This shift
can be
symbolized by the exchange of the henshin pen/wand, which was hardly
integral to life in spite of its necessity, for the choker, which is
permanent and nigh-unremovable. The shift also accounts for the
new-found
ability to manipulate appearance on the part of all Senshi, where it
was
previously confined to Sailor Moon, albeit with magical aid.

Furthermore...

The new elemental powers can also be seen as a manifestation of the
shift in
training. Outfits are more reflective, perhaps, of the personality of
the
Senshi's Silver Millenium counterparts, where before they were rather
like a
uniform. The elemental body double can be seen, potentially, as a
further
manifestation of the inner personality. [Author's note: No matter how
it may
remind one of the Soul Body from Mega Man X4.] Elemental weapons,
where
there were none before, also signify this rather momentous change,
and the
weapons seem to be tailored for their specific elements. Ice is
molecularly
dense, and forms in needlelike crystals, hence the production of a
stabbing
rapier. Fire, on the other hand, is much less easily contained and
controlled, though it does tend to spread in a constant line, making
a whip
a rational construct.

Finally...

I realize you perhaps didn't want it explained, but I feel this will
assuage
my inner scientist long enough for me to write fiction for a while.
