Neon Apocalypse Evangelion
Prologue - The End of the World

(Revision 1.4)

This is the first fic I have ever written, so please be gentle with all
questions,
comments, and snide remarks.

C&C and MST requested. Please send all email to:

*There are several spoilers ahead for those that haven't seen all the
episodes of Eva and the
movies (or are like me and don't have the willpower to wait and have
read the scripts so you
know how things end.) Don't read on if you have willpower!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inspired by NEON GENESIS EVANGELION created by Hideaki Anno and Gainax.

Most characters designed by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Kaela and the
personality for EVA-04,
Stephanie, are mine.)

I ask that all concerned that own these copyrights do not sue me as I am
poor enough as it is.
Trying to scrape through school on what Radio Shack pays really sucks.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The young girl looked around her. She was about 5'7" tall, had long
brunette hair,
bright gray eyes, and looked about 17 years old. She was standing in
front of an old, stone
catholic church that had been built before the second impact. She was
wearing a black, hooded
cassock that was tied shut with a white cord over her jeans and a button
up shirt. She had a
well toned body that came from regular workouts. Most would consider
her attractive if not
gorgeous.
She looked on in horror as the rest of humanity had their souls torn
from their bodies
and into Lilith.
"No," she screamed hearing Lilith's suductive call, "I refuse to give
my soul to this
demon."
With that she ran into the church and kneeled at the altar. She then
began to pray,
asking God to stop the tragedy that was happening around her.
She wished her brother was still alive. He would know what to do. He
always knew how
to set things right. He had risen her as his own and had taken care of
her when mother would
not. He had dried her tears and comforted her when she was sad and
scared away the monsters
when she was afraid. Right now she really needed him to do the latter
for her.
He was gone though and all she could do was put her faith in God that
this would end
and all would be right again as her brother taught her. It was then
that she heard the voice.
"Kaela, open your eyes your eyes and look up," a quiet, soothing voice
said. A voice
that calmed her and lessened her fear; a voice she recognized.
"Joseph," she said looking up with hopeful, tear filled eyes.
	"Yes," he replied.
	"But, how.....".
"How is not important, why is though. The Lord is pleased with your
faith and has
decided to reward you for it. He has decided to grant you a request."
"What kind of request, this sounds like a wish and you always said
wishes were to be
avoided, especially in rpgs."
Joseph laughed, "I know I said that but it's all right just this once,
OK."
"I don't know, I'm just scared and don't know what to do, I-I oh
Joseph," and with that
she flung herself into his arms. The tears began to fall from her eyes
as all the emotions she'd
kept hidden since he had died two weeks ago were let loose.
"There there my little Joan, it's all right, I'm here," he whispered
reassuringly while
stroking her hair. "I can't tell you what choice to make or even give
advice; I can only take
your request and relay it. Just remember what I taught you. Focus
yourself and look within you
and you will make the right choice, but no matter what you choose
remember that I love you and
you'll always be my precious little Joan."
She sat there, held in his arms, thinking about what she should do.
She wanted to take
the easy way out, just have him take her with him and give up on
everything else. She wanted
forget humanity and the world around her.
"I want to go with you and leave all this madness behind, but that's
not the right choice.
You taught me to love, and to forgive, and to care for all. I can't
take the easy way and be
with you, I'm sorry Joseph," se cried. "I need to stop this, to help
people as I know is right,
but why me? Why do I get this chance an not someone else, what did I do
to deserve this?"
"You have faith, a faith that has not wavered once. You have lived up
to the name of
the saint I named you after, my Joan of Arc, and I am proud of you," he
said. "The Lord is
pleased with you because of this."
"But what can I do, I'm not a priest or anything else important like
you."
"Follow," he said leading her out of the church.
When she stepped out the door the sight she saw frightened her as she
hadn't been before.
There were bodies everywhere. Everyone she knew lay out in the streets
with their souls torn from
them. The sky had turned amber yet she couldn't see the sun or clouds.
This wouldn't have been
quite as bad if it hadn't been for a silver demon that looked like the
one that had stolen
humanity's souls kneeling in front of the church. It was looking right
into her eyes; she
couldn't run or scream and felt more helpless than a field mouse being
chased by a hawk.
"Do not worry Kaela, she will not hurt you," Joseph said with a smile.
"But isn't this the demon that took everyone?" she asked him fearfully.
"No, this is an Evangelion. An artificial lifeform created by man from
the succubus
Lilith. She was brought here from Nevada by the Archangel Asha to help
you."
	"But why did this happen?"
"You've heard of Nerv, right," she nodded. "Well their purpose was not
to fight angels
but to carry out the human instrumentality project, the premature
evolution of man. This is the
result, a world covered in primordial ooze. The Lord is not pleased and
has chosen you and this
Evangelion to stop it."
	"But how...."
"You will know when the time comes, " he said. "You remember the oath
you took when you
became an altar sever, the oath that I told you was the old oath from
before Nicea. Well it
carries over to humanity now," he stated drawing the katana he wore.
"Do you understand and
accept this Michaela A. Kirschner?" he asked as he held out the weapon
toward her.
"Yes, I do," she stated resolutely as she drew her palm across the
blade adding a second
scar to her palm.
"Then you are ready sister, except for this," and he kissed her
forehead. He then wiped
the blade of his sword, sheathed it, and handed it to her. "This is for
luck, remember me when
you reach the past." He then bowed to her and disappeared from view.
She looked at the sword in her hands with her tearful eyes and then
slid it into her belt.
She tried to remember everything she knew about Nerv and what they did
but only drew a blank.
<Oh well, now what am I supposed to do?> she thought.
<We can leave when you get in, Kaela,> she heard in her mind. As she
looked around
she saw the hand of EVA-04 move beside her and its entry plug eject out
the back.
<It spoke to me, but how...,> she thought. "You can talk?" she asked
it.
<I can talk to you and only you for we are now bonded. Anywhere you
are, no matter how
far or what time of day, I will hear you. All you have to do is think
what you want to say to
me.>
	"Like telepathy, righ...."
	<Use your mind!> it shouted.
"Ouch, you...," she said, but stopped when the Eva's stare seemed to
intensify. <I mean,
you didn't have to shout so loud,> she thought back at it.
<Good, we will practice this later. Now I will introduce myself, I am
the Production
Model Evangelion Unit-04,> Eva-04 said in a voice that Kaela had now
decided was both young
and female.
Kaela began to climb up the Eva's arm to its entry plug. The Eva was
crouched over
to allow her easy access to the ejected plug. <So, where are we going
anyway Eva-four,> she
thought to the Eva. To herself, <I really hate that name, I'll need to
come up with something
better.>
<We will be going back in time to just after the death of the 17th
Angel, I think that
is what Uriel said,> replied the Eva.
Kaela then reached the plug and stopped. It looked sort of like a
cockpit. It had
two hand grips, various screens and sensors, and a seat, but that's not
what stopped her. What
stopped her was the body of an attractive 14-year old girl wearing a
white, skin-tight body suit
trimmed in silver and a pair of weird hair bretts.
Kaela shakily reached over to feel her pulse, there wasn't one and her
skin was cold.
She jerked her hand back and gasped. <Oh God, she's dead,> she thought
to herself. <Why didn't
you warn me?> she asked the Eva angrily.
<Sorry, it actually did not cross my mind to warn you,> she said. <Now
get her body out
of there and put on its plug suit,> said the Eva impatiently.
"What, you want me to put on her clothes, don't you have any respect
for the dead you
sick bitch!" Kaela screamed, furious at Eva-04.
<Calm down Kaela, the suit and the headset are necessary for a human to
interface
with an Evangelion,> she said calmly.
Kaela wanted to argue but didn't because she realized the Eva probably
knew what it
was talking about, unlike her at this moment. She then began to pull
out the body onto the
Eva's shoulder. She was lighter than Kaela thought and it didn't take
her too long. As she
removed the plug suit from the girl the way Eva-04 instructed her to,
she couldn't help but
admire the girl. <She's beautiful,> thought Kaela while her eyes traced
her curves. <What a
waste,> she thought. <Too bad she's dead, I wouldn't have
minded......stop that,> she told
herself reproachfully. <You don't have time for those kind of thoughts,
besides she's dead.>
Had Kaela been paying more attention she would have realized that the
neural headset
had just fallen off the Eva.
<Kaela, pay attention,> said the Eva reproachfully.
"What," she said looking toward the plug.
<You dropped the headset on the ground,> said the Eva. <You also
forgot to think your
thoughts to me, quit talking and go get that headset.>
Kaela climbed down muttering about the evils of EVAs in general and
hers in particular.
<Oh frag, it's broke,> she said as reached what was left of the
headset.
<We will just have to try to interface without it then. Please come
back up Kaela
and get in the plug suit.>
"OK," she said with a grin.
<Please use your mind Kaela. You need to get in the practice now
because where we
are going you cannot let anyone know we talk telepathically,> said the
Eva.
<Why not, and can we get you a real name?> asked Kaela as she started
back up.
<To answer you in order, because it will be to our advantage if they do
not know this,>
answered the Eva. <As for your other question, is not EVA-04
sufficient?>
<No, it isn't,> Kaela said as she reached the top again. <It will be
easier for me
if you had a name and not a callsign.>
<Well, just come up with whatever you think is best,> EVA-04 said as
Kaela began to
strip and put on the plug suit.
Kaela smiled. <How about Snowball,> she announced with a giggle.
<Your pathetic attempt at humor has not impressed me little one.>
Kaela the got a serious look on her face as she looked down at the
girl's body.
<What was her name?>
<It was Stephanie, is that what you want to call me Kaela?>.
<Yes,> she replied as she pressed the button on the plug suit's left
wrist.
<OK, then my name is Stephanie,> the Eva said in a voice that struck
Kaela as odd,
but she couldn't put her finger on why.
	<What do I do with this headset?>
	<Bring it,> replied Stephanie.
<OK,> Kaela said as she tossed in her clothes, sword, and finally
headset as she
climbed in.
< Kaela, I am going to close the plug now. After I do this I will fill
it with LCL.
This is an oxygen rich liquid that will allow you to breathe easier and
to interface better with
me.>
<Understood,> Kaela said bracing herself for the worst. She struggled
a bit when the
LCL first submerged her but eventually relaxed into it. <I think I'm
going to be sick,> was her
only thought.
Stephanie laughed. <You are fine, just relax. Now we are going to go
over the start
sequence. Just repeat what I tell you and it will be fine.>
They then ran through the startup finishing with Kaela setting the
voice interface
for Latin.
	<Why Latin?> asked Stephanie.
<My brother and I used to talk in Latin all the time around the house.
It's like a
second language to me. I figured since you're the closest thing to
family I have left we could
do the same thing when piloting.>
<I'm honored. Amazingly enough, our interface is working fine without
the headset.
Probably because we can talk telepathically. Are you ready to try
piloting?>
	<Roger.>
<OK Kaela, just follow my instructions. First picture in your mind
what you want to
do and move the correct control stick to do it, OK.>
	<Roger,> she replied nervously.
<Now, move your hand up and pull Stephanie's body off our shoulder
Pilot Kirschner.>
	<Understood.>
The Eva's left hand began to move up to its shoulder. At first shakily
and then a
little more easily as it finally reached the body and put it in its
hand.
<Very good, now where is the nearest cemetery?>
<About ten blocks north, why?> asked Kaela.
<Take us there,> was all Stephanie said.
	<Roger.>
After almost falling several times and 20 minutes later EVA-04 reached
the cemetery.
	<Now what?> asked Kaela.
	<Bury her,> was EVA-04's reply.
<Good, it's the least I can do for her after doing something as
sacrilegious as taking
the clothes of her corpses back,> she said in a relieved tone.
After burying Stephanie and saying a short eulogy for her, Kaela went
over a the
Eva's controls a few more times. She also practiced with the
progressive knife and progressive
sword that the Eva was equipped with.
<Are we ready to go now Kaela?>
"Yes, I am ready Snowball," she said smiling
<Your sense of humor is pathetic,> replied Stephanie in an annoyed
tone. She then
turned her thoughts upward. <We are ready Asha.>
With that, Evangelion Unit-04 and its Pilot disappeared into a Sea of
Dirac.

*Author's notes:
I haven't seen either of the Evangelion movies, so please excuse my
lack of Third
Impact knowledge. Here's a few things that might help picture what's
goning on in this fic and
answer a few questions.

1: The church Kaela is standing in front of is St. Joseph's Cathedral in
Columbus, Ohio.
For those of you that haven't seen it, it's impressive, trust me.

2: The plug suit that Eva-04 previous pilot was wearing looks like
Rei's. The only exception
is that all the places Rei's suit is blue or orange, this one is silver.

3: From what I've been told, Evangelion Unit-04 looks like a silver
version of Eva-03. The
snowball joke is from when I thought it was white. I haven't thought of
a different nickname
for Kaela to use yet.

4: The way Eva-04 is crouched over is identical to the way Eva-00 and
Eva-02 are in episode
16 of the series. Their is enough room there for Kaela to strip
Stephanie's corpse I think.

5: Yes, Asha is an Archangel for those of you who think there is only
four. If you count all
of the Archangels and Archdemons that are named in every religion
derived from Jewduism, there
are actually nine (that I know of at least). Asha is the Archangel of
truth. I know this
is dumb to point out, but I had several friends argue this point with me
after reading this.
It lasted several hours and I actually enjoyed proving my point to them.
Please don't argue
this with me via e-mail. Once is enough.

6: The start sequence that Eva-04 has Kaela go through is identical to
the one Asuka says in
episode 8 (I'm pretty sure 8 is 'Asuka Strikes').

7: For those of you I have confused with the name change, yes Kaela
started out with the name
Michaela. Due to coincidence, I'll use the short form most of the time.

I would like to thank the Jusenkyo Guide and Brent for their C&C. I
appreciated it and hope
I answered all your questions.

I'd also like to thank Shachihoko for his feedback. Sorry about the
