The Ring DOES react to heat; it just takes a lot more than for a ordinary
ring. When it was cut from Saurons hand, Isildur noted that it was hot to the
touch.

Well, exactly. Lina's fireball is pretty hot (it melts iron) so it would
probably heat the Ring sufficiently to give Gourry an "Oowie."

Gandalf specifically said that "There is no smith's forge in this Shire
that could change it at all.  Not even the anvils and furnaces of the
Dwarves could do that."

Melting iron, in other words, doesn't mean beans.  To heat up the One Ring,
that would have to be SOME fireball.
