Chapter 2: I hate this place, but...
"Ohayho, Shinji! Time to get up!" called Misato from behind Shinji's
'Lovely Suite'.
After some decision making and contemplating on both their parts. Misato
chose to allow Shinji to move in with her again. 'Besides,' she reasoned,
'her place needed cleaning up any how.'
Shinji didn't really care either way. He still held small amounts of
resentment towards Misato for brinning him back in the first place.
Fortunatly for him and her, he couldn't hold a grudge on her for very long.
'It wasn't her fault the Angel's returned.' he thought, and if he was
living with her, he wouldn't be lonely. He still hated that feeling.
When Shinji arrived the place was just as bad as when he had first come to
live there. Perhaps it was worse. It seemed that after Shinji had left,
Misato just said 'Hell with it' and let everything go. Truth be told that
was what she really did. That and drink herself under the table quite a
few nights after his leaving.
Shinji didn't mind though. It felt sort of nice to repeat that part
again. He wasn't too pleased, however, when Misato had once again given
just about all of the chores to him.
Shinji rolled over in his bed. He didn't want to have to get up so early
today. He just wanted to lie there, just lie there and be left with his
thoughts.
"Shinji, get up!" Misato called in a sing-song voice.
"Come on Lazy Bones! Don't make me come in there and get up out of bed
my-self." she yelled playfully, and knocked on the wooden door frame.
Shinji let out a sigh and got out of bed and stretched. Between a yawn he
managed to say, "Alright, I'm up. Just give me a few minutes to get
dressed."
"Need any help?" asked a giggling Misato from behind the door.
"No!" Shinji shouted back. Blushing heavily.
Misato giggled some more and began to walk down the hallway, thinking,
'That boy takes everything so seriously.' She stopped walking and looked
back. 'Still, I'm glad he's back.' she thought, a peaceful smile on her face.

**************
Shinji walked down the short hallway of the apartment. He stopped and
looked at the closed door of what was once Asuka's room.
By sudden curiosity he opened the door. Inside there was nothing. The
walls were bare as was the floor. No furniture, only a a bare bed and a
few empty boxes that had been left over from some time or another.
Shinji sighed. He didn't know what he was looking for in that empty room.
Perhaps it was for Asuka, for her to see him looking in at her
unharmfully, and then to see her throw a sudden fit by being disturbed by
him. But, there was nothing in that room. Nothing. It was empty and lonely.
Casting his eyes around the place again he then let out another sigh and
closed the door.
Shinji sat down to breakfast with Misato. He feared what she had made
that morning.
Luckily enough for him it was just toast. It not being burnt was a plus
for him.
Misato sat down across from him smiling. Shinji sat and nibbled on his
food. Not that hungry. Looking up to face Misato he tried to find
something to say.
Again he was lucky, for Misato had started the conversation. With good
news too,
"We've managed to reach Asuka in Germany."
"Really?" Shinji was happy for that news. "Will she be coming back?"
"Yep. It won't be for a few weeks now. There are some things that we
need to make sure of and tie up some loose ends... well you know how it is."
Shinji beamed. Asuka was coming back. Shinji was confused, why was he
happy about her coming back. All she did was blame him for everything, nag
at him, and argue with whatever he said. But Asuka was some one who
understood him. She was alone, just as he was. She just had a different
way of dealing with it.
"Listen, we've got to go." said Misato, interrupting Shinji's train of
thought. "You can take that with you if you like." she said pointing to
the barely touched breakfast in front of him.
"No thanks." he said politely.
Misato simply shrugged and stood up. Shinji followed her example.
The two of them put the dishes in the sink, deciding to do them later when
they got back.
"Ready?"
Shinji only nodded.

**************
Misato and Shinji rode the floating pad upwards inside the Nerv building.
When they reached the top they met up with Ritsuko.
Shinji had only seen Ritsuko once since his return and that was only for a
brief moment. She had been busy at the time trying to over see that Unit
01 was ready for operation.
"Morning Ritsuko!" said Misato smiling.
"Good morning Misato, Shinji." Ritsuko responded.
"Morning." Shinji muttered.
"Are you ready to go?" asked Ritsuko. Shinji looked up at Misato
quizically, he was didn't know what was going on. Misato gave him a
reasuring smile, then nodded towards Ritsuko.
Ritsuko nodded back and motioned with her left hand for the two to follow her.
After going down what seemed like endless corridors, Shinji tried
desperately to memorize the turns and passes that they were going through,
but he was unsucessful, the trio finally came to a large door.
Ritsuko took out her security card and swiped it through the identification
slot. The red light turned off with an ignorant beep and a green light
switched on.
"Misato where are we going?" Shinji whispered. Misato was about to answer
when Ritsuko said, "Shinji. Welcome to Project E: Construction Lab 3."
Shinji was shocked, "Project E? You mean Evangelion Units? You're
building them?"
Ritsuko nodded with a slight air of pride, and Misato beamed.
The doors slid open. Shinji was the first to walk in. His breath got
caught in his throat as he viewed the enormous room the he now stood in.
"Amazing." he gasped, not even in his dreams had he ever thought of such a
large area in one building. NERV was filled with many secrets.
"It's, Unit 00'!" he cried out, as he saw the huge blue Eva towering over
him, suspended by cables and wall sockets. "I thought that it was
destroyed." she said, truning to face the two women.
"It was." said Misato simply. As if those two words cleared up everything.
Seeing Shinji's confused look, Ritsuko began to fill in the void, "After
Unit 00' was destoyed, we managed to scavange a few sizable bits and pieces
of it and began to remake it." She paused to look up at the blue Eva. "It
was a gamble for us to try and rebuild an Eva instead of making one from
scratch, which would understandably take considerably, much longer."
"But so far it looks like it was worth it. It's ready to be moved out of
here and ready for piloting." finished Misato.
"Piloting?" asked Shinji, taking his eyes off the Eva above him to face
Misato.
"Well of course. We can't let man kind's hope just sit here now can we."
she said.
"Who will pilot it?" asked Shinji. Misato looked at him as if her had
just done something that would be classified as strange or obserd, at that
very moment. "Who do you think?" she remarked smartly.
"You mean-"
"Ayanami Rei." Ritsuko stated flatly, interupting Shinji. Shinji smiled.
Misato grinned menahicly as she caught his broad smile.
"I'll bet that you're happy about that?" she chuckled, bending over and
elbowing him in the gut.
"That-that's not true! Not in that way!" he yelled, blushing. Misato
just smiled even more. Even Ritsuko had a slight grin on her face, as she
wrote some things down on a clip board.
Shinji desperately wanted to get the spotlight off of him immediately.
Then something caught his eye. Behind Unit '00', workers were busy
bustling around. Pointing he asked shakingly, "What are they working on?"
Misato and Ritsuko followed his pointed finger to see the workers. "Oh,
them. Misato, why don't you show Shinji the 'Twins'. I've got somethings
to take care of." and then she began walking away.
"The Twins?" Shinji looked up at Misato's smiling face.
"Come with me, and I'll show you."
Shinji followed Misato to one of the elevators. Going up, Shinji could
make out what looked to be two new Evangelion Units. Misato and he got off
and walked along a self supporting bridge that took them along side of Unit
'00'. Walking upon the bridge they could then come to see the front view
of the two newest Eva Units.
"Ikari Shinji, meet Evangelion Units 1.1 and 1.2." announced Misato as if
she was introducing Shinji to important guests. Shinji felt half obliged
to say hello to them.
Instead he decided to take a close awe inspiring inspection of the new
Units. He smiled as he silently said "The 'Twins'." to himself, for the
two Eva's were built almost exactly alike.
Both were white in colour with a few colour bands here and there. The head
shape and body design of the Evas looked very much like Eva Unit 01's.
With the exception that the limbs and body looked to be made for more agile
manovers, than for hand to hand combat. The head was not equipted with a
horn like Unit 01 was, instead near the back of the head were two long
horns, that pointed far backwards. The head did however, come with two eye
sockets and an amost grinning mouth, the 'chin' was not as long and jutted
out as Unit 01's was. The 'chin' for the new Evas were small and rounded.
The Evas themselves looked to be smaller than the first three Eva Units.
These new ones only came up to the original's 'shoulders'.
There were a few, very few ways that the two differed. The most obvious
difference was that Unit 1.1 had a few parts that were bright green in
colour, while Unit 1.2 had those same parts in a bright red colour.
The second slightly less obvious was the numbering located on their
forearms and other areas.
The third and last difference was small, but also quite noticable. On Unit
1.1's right eye socket, a bright green line, like a scratch ran over it,
that split into two at the bottom. Much like the ones on Unit 01's eyes.
Unit 1.2, had the same scratch going along it's left eye socket, and in
bright red.
Other than that, they were very much like the other Eva's.
"I thought that you didn't have enough time to make new Evas." he asked,
facing Misato.
"Well these two have been sort of our underground project. We've always
been working on them, it's just that this year we began to think the
situation more throughly and that we need these new Evas."
Shinji smiled looking at these two new Eva's. "So who is to pilot them?"
he asked, not taking his eyes off the Evas.
"We haven't found out yet. The Marduke report is holding their votes.
Wouldn't it be neat if the next 'Children' were twins?" Misato laughed.
Her laughter stopped, when she noticed Shinji looking very serious and sad,
though he was still looking at the new Evas. "Shinji what's wrong?"
"If you don't have any pilots trained yet, then that means that two new
kids are going to be forced to pilot these stupid things, and go through
all of those horrid things that I went through. Being inexperienced, and
thrown into battle." He spun around roughly to face Misato, his eyes
watery and his voice harsh, "You people should have planned this whole
thing better! You should have already found the next 'Children' and
trained them to be ready for any situation!" he wiped his eyes, but they
filled up with tears again, "You should have been more prepared! How could
you be so irresponsible!" he yelled. All work had stopped and all were
focusing on him. He didn't care, he was angry, the memories that he had
desperately wanted to forget now alienated his mind.
Misato looked around at the audience focusing on them. She then reached
out a hand towards Shinji, wanting to calm him down, to tell him that it
was okay. But she couldn't do that, she wasn't his mother, and he didn't
want her caring touch at that moment. He angrily slapped her hand away and
walked hurridly towards the elevator. When it reached the bottom, he
stalked off and left the large room.
Misato held her slapped hand close to her cheast. When she realized that
all of the eyes of the workers had gone from Shinji leaving the room to
her, she cast a dangerous look to everyone. A look that told them to get
back to work or else.
And every one complied. Misato rested her hands on the railing of the
bridge. She stared at the new Evas. She frowned, "He's right, we aren't
prepared, but what can we do?" she muttered. The twin Evas stared back at
her, but they remained silent.
****************************************************************************
**************
Shinji walked down and along the many corridors of NERV. He had been
going for about an hour when he began to wish that he had not stormed off
the way he did, and that he had been nicer to Misato.
"Strange," he spoke to himself, "I seem to be getting a shorter temper
these days." he stopped walking, and thought about going back and
apologizing to Misato for his behavior. He truned around and realized with
waking horror, that he was lost.
While he had been storming away in a foul mood, Shinji had not payed
attention to where he was going. At the time he had no true destination,
only to get away. Now he didn't know if he had walked closer to the exit
of NERV or deeper into the massive building. He made a mental note to find
some one and ask to be shown the way out, even if it did sound stupid.
"If only Asuka could see me now." Shinji laughed to himself. Scratching
the back of his head. Mainly out of nervousness and the slight feeling of
fear that nagged at the back of his conscience.
So with reserved feelings of nervousness and slight fear, Shinji took off
down one of the corridors.
****************************************************************************
**************
Shinji had been walking for what seemed like hours. He was exhausted. He
leaned up against the wall of the corridor to rest for a minute or two.
"Doesn't this place have an exit?" he asked, but no one answered. Shinji
began to get frightened, he had not seen any one since he had started this
whole expedition for the way out.
"Alright one more door then I'm quiting."
Shinji got up and walked towards the automatic doors that were in front of
him.
The doors slide open, revealing a different kind of corridor. This one
did not have any doors along the way. The lighting was all in a dim red
colour. The floor and walls had metal grates around them. Like as if the
corridor was in a submarine of some sort.
Intrigued, Shinji felt a new sense of energy within him and began to walk.
As he did he looked around, this corridor seemed familiar somehow. As if
he had walked down it before.
Shinji stopped dead in his tracks when he began to hear footsteps coming
towards him. Shinji felt an overwhelming sense of joy within, some one to
take him out of here! But now he seemed reluctant, this red corridor
fasinated him in a strange way. Still he smiled and began to walk towards
the sounds of the footsteps.
All hope and joy that Shinji had felt when he first heard th1 steps, came
crumbling down. He stopped again. His mouth slightly ajar. Walking
towards him was Ikari Gendou. His father.
He seemed to have a slight smile on his face as he neared Shinji, perhaps
it was because the person walking next to him was Ayanami Rei. She was
dressed only in a simple white bath robe. Her face was still and
indifferent to all.
Commander Gendou smiled down at the frail, white skinned girl. He lead
her along with a strong, gentle hand at the nape of her back.
Shinji was filled with a mixture of emotions. He was morified that of all
the people working in NERV, his father was the only one he came across. He
was also filled with a mix of sadness, anger and jealously. Aimed mainly
at Rei. Although she looked more spaced and out of it than usual, his
father continued to smile at her.
Smile. At her.
It seemed to much for him to bear. He thought of his father as a cold and
unfeeling man. Yet he always appeared happy around Rei.
Shinji's mind began to wonder what his father's smile meant to Rei. Was
there was something more to it, something he just couldn't see.
Shinji's body began to grow stiff as his father neared. When at last his
father had seen him. Shinji felt frozen to the spot.
Gendou stopped with Rei when they approached Shinji. His face became cold
and hard again.
He regarded Shinji with little more recognition than one would give a small
stain, lying on the street.
Shinji could not bring himself to look at his father's face. His hand
reached out and grasped the metal grate on the wall. His fingers numbly
working their way in and out of the holes.
Indifferent Rei led her eyes from Shinji up towards Gendou's hard set
face. Her head leaned toward the right slightly as she stared up at him.
She blinked a number of times, then turned her head to look at Shinji. She
noticed how he did not look into his father's face, and noticed how his
finger's moved nervously. Yet her mind was blank to the two men.
Then something in Rei's mind clicked, or rather exploded. She found words
forming in her mind and her own voice giving them way to sound, "Hello
Shinji."
Although her voice was incredibly small and soft. They were spoken in a
light hearted, almost friendly tone. So very unlike Rei's usual monotonous
tone.
The two men were taken aback. Shinji looked at Rei, his eyes shimmering.
His mouth slightly parted, almost as if he were about to respond. But his
fear and confusion over ruled anything he would say. So he merely nodded
dumbly.
Gendou looked at Rei wide eyed. Almost losing his collected composure.
Yet, he quickly reasserted himself and placed a hand at Rei's back.
Together they resumed walking. Rei's face became blank again.
Shinji did not bother to stop them. He couldn't even if he had wanted.
He took his fingers out of the grating. He turned around to watch them go.
Rei turned her head and looked back at him. It was just a glance, and was
gone in a flash. Still Shinji felt his face heat up as it turned a slight
hue of red. He cursed him self for blushing. She just looked at him, he
thought. Still, Shinji's heart skipped a beat even as he thought about it.
'She called me by name.' he thought, his face reddened again. He then
told himself that it was just a fluke and that it meant nothing. Yet his
mind still lingered on it.
Shinji breathed out a long sigh. His eyes went wide as he heard a solid
'thump', coming from down the corridor that Rei and Gendou had just walked
down.
Curious, Shinji began to walk down the corridor. He paused momentarily as
he heard the same 'thump' sound. He was getting closer. He listened
again, and began to follow the steady 'thump' sounds. At first Shinji
thought that they could be the sounds of a machine banging up against
something. This thought was quickly erased, when the thumps came in two's
or three's and how they seemed to stretch out for long periods of time, in
some cases.
Shinji finally came to the source of the thumps. He stood in front of
another sliding door. He looked at it closely. His eyes suddenly went
wide. "It couldn't be." he gasped breathlessly.
Suddenly the doors slid open. Shinji took a startled step back, a stifled
gasp escaping his mouth.
Within the room was the Dummy Plug System.
End Chapter 2
Author's Notes:
Now what's a story without notes? Alright so it's still a story. Leave me
alone! I'm an overly depressed maniac, with too much time on her hands.
And I really should be doing my homework.
So, are you bored yet? Yeah, well so am I.
I'm doing my best to get you people interested in this story, so what do
you want from me?
It won't be like this for much longer. I hope. Hey, this is my first Eva
fanfic, so give me some slack here!
As usual I ask for many C&C on this Fanfic. I'm not writing any more until
I get some. Mind you if it's all bad, and people saying that I should
stop. I'll stop writing then too.
Now I haven't said any copy rite things yet so I'll only say this once.
Evangelion is not mine! As much as I'd love for it to be, it's not! All
of the characters and stuff is property of Gainax. I'm only borrowing them
for a while. So what if I don't return them.
However the story (As bad as it is) is mine. For those of you who are
stupid enough to take it from me, you shall be severely sorry.
The 'Twin' Evangelion Units 1.1 and 1.2 are mine. I created them. Alright
so I used the Evangelion Units to design them after. Who can blame me?!
Who? You? The reader? No way!
Also the character ---- is mine. You didn't really think that I'd give it
away now did you? Well I'll be sure to say it's mine in the next chapter.
_If_ there's a next chapter. Remember to e-mail me if you want it.
