Well, one of the most twisted SI's I've ever read was Dojo Raider, by Lara
Bartram.  As for why most SI's are written by males, isn't it really just
representative of the demographics?  I mean, even though it is quickly
changing, the net is still more a male pastime than a female one.  Same with
anime fandom.  So the fact that there are more male fic authors in general
is not a big surprise, and should lead logically to more SI's being written
by males than females, ... at least until fandom and netdom demographics
finish evening up, if they ever truly do.

On a related and contradictory note, I submitted a script to Paramount once,
and was invited out to a meeting with Ron Moore, the (then) producer of Star
Trek: DS9.  I spent some time with him one evening and have a standing
invitation to go back.  I learned a lot about writing for Star Trek that
evening.  Here is one interesting fact regarding "self-insertions" in a
non-anime genre:  Fully 90% of all manuscripts submitted to Pocket Books for
Star Trek novels (which, as one female friend of mine puts it, are
essentially "fanfiction gone pro") 1) are written by females, 2) have a
female guest star who 3) invariably graduated at the top of her class and/or
is the youngest person ever to attain/obtain some notable
accomplishment/reward/distinction, 4) immediately hits it off with the crew,
5) wins the hearts and minds of the main cast, 6) saves the day for everyone
in the end, and usually has 7) an affair along the way with the author's
favorite male character.  These stories have been labled, "Mary Janes," and
are immediately and unceremoniously dropped into the wastebasket.

So, in this case, the situation is more than simply reversed, it is reversed
and amplified.
The question, therefore, isn't "Why are SI's all done by by males?" but
rather, "Why are most of the female SI's about Star Trek, not anime?"  It
also puts the lie to this unenlightened and baldly chauvanistic statement
from an earlier response:

"'Cuz guys are morons.  You all think that you know so much better
than any woman, and if YOU were there things would go OK.  On top
of that, you all have the hots for those unreal anime chicks."
