   You may be correct in what you say. I'm not familiar enough with
Evangelion to express an opinion on how Asuka would react to Ranma,
especially the Ranma in this story. My point is just that I don't
see any reason, in the story, for Ranma to have any interest at all
in Asuka - the only possible explanation I could come up with is
that she unconsciously reminds him of Akane, and I just can't see
it on the basis of what we've seen so far.

Well, while it *DOES* look like the author is attempting to setup a
Ranma-Asuka relationship, so far there is nothing in it beyond
fighting.  Even in the early stage of the Ranma-Akane setup
some non-hostile emotions were shown.  Here the author could 
simply be trying to mislead people and there could be
nothing but animosity between Ranma and Asuka.

   Let me ask those of you who are Ranma fans - even if you're not
a proponent of the Ranma-Akane relationship, do you agree that the
reason Ranma cares for Akane is NOT because of those times she acts
like Asuka in this story, but because of the times she doesn't?

Agreed.

If the author does intend to pair Ranma and Asuka, he needs to 
put something besides bickering into the equation.  A blatant lack
so far.
