Seraphim's Judgment
Part 9e:
Shinji's Angels

Written (and completely botched) by
Christian Clark

"COWARD!" Tabris yelled, creating an impressing depression in the
valley with his immense power.

He was certain Nefesh was here. The chance to exert revenge on the
traitor was so close. Yet, when Tabris did come to the site from which
the wail originated, he found the wail gone and Nefesh nowhere to be
found. Once more the coward eluded his fate and Tabris was beyond
agitated.

"COME OUT TRAITOR!" Tabris screamed again and with a fierce wave of his
hand, several tons of ground, rocks, and trees were instantly moved
several hundred yards to the north.

As the sound of UN Hoverships started to reach his ears, Tabris decided
it would be best to wait until later to kill the traitor. It appeared
that Nefesh's false lead and his resulting rage had alerted the humans
to his presence. He was too close to Adam to ruin it all now.

Just as easily for a human to breath, he flew between the trees and
began to dissolve into a form that the humans wouldn't be able to spot
him in. He would find Nefesh another day and make him pay!

In the depths of NERV, workers went all over the blue EVA, taking
plates off, only to put in newer additions to the EVAs circuitry.

Ritsuko, with a pad in hand, checked off item after item on her list.
If things went along accordingly, they could upgrade all the other EVAs
in the process. She looked to her right to see nearly twenty-five feet
of synthetic white hair that would be an experimental upgrade.

"What's this?" Maya asked walking up to her commander with a report
meant for Fuyutsuki.

"It's an experimental upgrade. We're planning to remove the coolant
inside Unit 00 and install this as a replacement coolant. This way, we
can expand the amount of battery life the EVAs have by putting in more
of the internal bats." Ritsuko said, without turning to her visitor.

"But... what about the hair itself? Won't it easily tear or fall off?"
Maya asked, wondering the intelligence of it.

"Not this hair. It's been specifically modified with special fibers to
make it almost as hard as iron." She said with a smirk at her own
prowess.

"Well... just as long as it's not the dummy plugs." Maya said turning.

"If it eases your pitiful heart any, I've decided to discontinue the
dummy plugs and am systematically destroying any information I've
learned about them." She said with a bit of a frown.

Maya blinked, although Ritsuko was rather dedicated to the Dummy Plugs,
something must have happened to her to change her mind. "Maybe it's true
and you're not the cold-hearted raunch everyone thinks you are."

Ritsuko snorted and sat down to her computer, "I could care less about
what people think about me."

Maya took a single last look at Ritsuko before going back through the
door. "...sempai... I wish I could help... if you'd let me..."

The doors closed and Maya shook her head while walking to Fuyutsuki's
office.

*************************************************

"Is that so? So, the UN wants us to actually do something else other
than fighting angels. I thought as much. Understood." Fuyutsuki said
before putting down the telephone.

"What was that about sir?" Shigeru asked typing at his console.

"Apparently, the UN wants us to help quell some uprising in Iraq. Some
madman's son is following in the footsteps of dear old dad and
condemning the rest of the world for being devil worshipers or something
like that." He said with evident boredom.

"So, why are they asking us to do it?"

"Because this madman has enough nukes to take out the rest of the human
race... or so he says. It's also rumored that he has an EVA unit of his
own."

This caused Shigeru to blink. "But aren't EVAs supposed to be
sanctioned by the UN alone?"

"Well, maybe someone was lying. Either way, the EVAs will be dispatched
just to make those guys at the UN happy."

"Has Commander Ikari heard of this?"

"Yes he has, in fact, he was the one who just told it to me. Inform the
school to let out all the working Children out at once and tell them to
report to NERV at once."

*************************************************

During lunch at school, Shinji noticed that a few people had been
walking towards the sounds of what sounded like a viola. So, putting
down his lunch, he walked to the source of the music.

To his surprise, it was Kaworu playing his viola. With his eyes closed,
he played it with such mastery and precision that only made the music
sound all the better.

Only when the song finished, Kaworu opened his eyes and the audience of
several kids clapped their approval. Shinji was among them, much to
Kaworu's delight.

"Kaworu-san... that was... that was amazing." Shinji said with awe.

"It is not much I am afraid. But I enjoy it." Kaworu said modestly.

"But where did that piece come from? I don't recall ever hearing it
anywhere." Shinji asked as they walked back to the place where Shinji
left his lunch.

"It was something I made up myself, but it was not easy. To create
something that would grab the attention of a few has said that I have
done a good job. Yet, I know I can do better."

Sitting down, Shinji said after taking a long look his fellow
classmate. "Somehow... I know you can do that. I don't know why, but
it's just that I get this feeling... something completely new."

A forced cough made them turn to see Touji and Rei standing there,
although they were throwing dispassionate looks towards Kaworu. Rei
spoke up, "NERV has called all four of us. There is an emergency. We
must be going."

So, packing up what was left of his lunch, Shinji ran with the others
as he saw Kaworu run to get the case for his instrument. "Kaworu-san!
Aren't you coming?"

"Yes, but I will be right behind you all. Do not wait up for me." He
called back. So, not wanting to worry about him just yet, he continued
with the First and Fourth Children to NERV.

***************************************

Dressed in their own plug suits, the four children stood in front of
the map of the area they were to be fighting at.

"What you see is the base the madman has. It's been fortified against
land attacks, long range missiles, sir strikes, and what not." Misato
said, gesturing to the map in front of them all.

"Then, what good will the EVAs do against his fortifications?" Touji
asked.

"The EVAs are fast and quick enough to dodge the missiles and ships
that he has defending the compound. Yet, there are rumors he has an EVA
of his own. Your orders are to infiltrate the facility, permanently
disable the nuclear missiles, and capture the leader."

"What if the leader offers resistance? Should we attack to defend
ourselves?" Kaworu asked.

Misato turned to the Fifth Child, "Only if it comes to the very worst."
Then she turned to the other children. "Shinji, your job will be to take
out the missiles. Kaworu, you'll take care of the land mine field
located about the facility. Touji, you delay the forces of the lunatic
while Rei subdues the leader and brings him in. Attack only if
necessary."

All the Children nodded and went to the bays of their respective EVAs as
the transport jets loaded the EVAs.

On the elevator, Kaworu turned to Shinji.

	"Shinji-kun?"

	"Hai?"

"Are you scared about this mission?"

"Sort of... but I got used to it after the sixth mission I went
through."

"Really? Then you must be used to the thought of killing."

	"What?"

"The Angels you have faced before were living too, were they not?"

"Well... I guess so. But if we didn't kill them, they'd kill us."

"The law of nature I surmise... kill or be killed. Am I right?"

	"Yes."

"Sad, yet true. Too bad not all species can be as advanced as us."
Kaworu said, laced with sarcasm.

"But we're no different. We kill each other and that makes us no
different than them."

Kaworu smiled and said, "Do you want to continue this after the
mission?"

Shinji blinked, "As in continue talking about this?"

He nodded, "Yes. But more the reason of spending the night."

Once more, Shinji blinked. He remembered Uncle Kyo and Aunt Yuki's kids
often spent the night at friends' house once in a while with friends. He
never really knew what it was like to spend the night at a friend's
house.

"I... I don't see why not. But I think I need to ask Misato-san first."
He said apprehensively.

"That is good. After all, I would enjoy the company." He said turning
back to the front, watching the EVAs.

*************************************************

It had been a literal standoff between the UN forces and the
helicopters. With every attempt to advance by the UN forces, it always
ended up with a few ships blowing up and a repeat of the leader's
announcement.

"The world must be purged of the great Satan! Man is trying to become
God when he is not! I will carry out God's will and purge this world of
the Great Satan and the demons made with the hands of man!"

Meanwhile above, four children overheard his announcement.

"This guy's really lost it!" Touji said on the radio to the others.

"That's really a matter of opinion, Touji-kun. Maybe he's doing the
right thing and we are all simply over reacting." Kaworu said simply.

"But what about all the innocent people that'll die?" Touji screamed
back.

"All I said was that what he is doing COULD be right. With as much
religious text as I have read, I highly doubt God would want one of his
own to kill of the rest of them just because He's displeased. He has His
own reasons for doing things... things that we as humans cannot begin to
comprehend." Kaworu retorted, which therefore silenced the Fourth Child.

Then Rei face appeared beside Kaworu's on the screen of Shinji's EVA,
"We are here to stop the leader. Nothing more. We are beginning the
operation."

One by one, the EVAs were dropped from the transport planes. Each one
in a landing strip made for each one. Rei's landed on the northern
section of the attack force, Shinji and Kaworu landed on the western,
and Touji landed on the southern end. Each EVA landed, had its based
U-Cord to the backs of the EVAs and the attack began.

"Unit 02, beginning Hellfire spread." Kaworu said. With that, the plates
on the Unit's shoulders opened up and several smaller missiles flew up
and exploded, sending massive heat to the ground, blowing up the mines
underneath the ground. Based on the missile of the same name, it
increased the heat several times to the point where the mines blew up.
Leaving a clear path to the facility.

"Unit 01, overlaying missile location with overhead map and beginning
search." Shinji said, letting the screen on the map to his right light
up with the locations of the missiles.

Units 01 began a rapid sprint through over the barren desert.

"Unit 03, beginning attack. Spreading AT Field." Touji said as he
jumped over exploding mines, pulled out his prog sword, and into the
swarm of VTOL craft that attacked him.

"Unit 00, beginning search." Rei said, switching the camera on the blue
EVA to infrared. Of the several buildings in the facility, there were
hardly any; save for what might have been the repair crew.

{...more than what you know... freak...} Tabris' words said as she
looked though the first building. She looked about to see that no one
had said anything.

{...construct of another...} the memories said again. Rei blinked,
shook her head, and continued the search.

{In fact... I'm more human than you are...} it said again. She blinked
again and held her head. Something was wrong. That was when it came to
her. Tabris was doing this. He was refreshing the memories in her mind
about her verbal beating.

	{What do you want Tabris?!}

	{I'm simply letting you know what it's like to really be one of us.}

	{Stay out of my head! You have no right to do this to me!}

{The rules of humanity do not apply to one much greater than their
own... freak.}

"REI! In front of you!" Touji screamed, throwing Rei out of her mental
argument. She looked up to see a brown and white EVA reach for and grab
her neck. By the time she started to bring her arms up to defend, it was
too late.

As she felt the pressure on her neck increase, she overheard Misato
scream out orders to the others.

"Touji, Kaworu, change in orders. Stop that other EVA! MOVE IT!"

But Rei knew better. This EVA was made much better than hers was and
before the others would get there, she would be dead.

	{Oh dear Rei...} Tabris taunted. {Why be killed... when you can kill!}
With that, his presence reached into the darker side of her angel genes.

	{Imouto! Imouto! Don't listen to him! IMOUTO!!} Kooriichi's voice
screamed before everything went dark for Rei. When she awoke again, she
looked up to the enemy EVA and screamed.

The dangling arms of Unit 00 suddenly came to life, tore off the hands
of the Iraqi EVA, and pushed it away.

Inside her plug, Rei took the controls, commanded the EVA to move
forward, and screamed at the top of her lungs. As the blue EVA tackled
its foe, Rei's face contorted with rage as she forced her EVA to tear
off the other's right arm.

Looking down at the center of the EVA's near prone body, she saw
Kaworu/Tabris' face.

{...freak...} the word said over and over.

She screamed and started to punch the head of the other EVA in.
Imagining it to be Kaworu. When she felt it was enough, her right hand
reached down, grabbed the head, and tore it off, sending the artificial
blood everywhere.

Even then, Rei's animalistic charge had yet to qualm itself.

	{...freak...} Tabris said again.

She punched through the chest of the EVA, sending more blood
everywhere.

	{...freak...}

Tearing through the armor plates, she searched through the bloody
remains of the EVA for what she wanted most. The Entry Plug.

	{...freak...}

At last, she found the plug trying to get out. As she lifted up the
body, the entry plug did eject. Yet got no farther as Unit 00's fist
clamped its fingers around it.

	{...freak...}

Looking through the infrared, she saw the person inside. In her mind,
it was Kaworu. Her eyes narrowed at the thought of killing him. She
would kill him. Make him pay. The thought quickly transmitted into
actions as she brought more pressure on the plug.

	{...freak...}

The words of Misato were ignored as Rei commanded her EVA to crush the
plug with both hands.

She breathed quickly and felt the dark presence of Tabris leave her.

{Doesn't it feel good, dear Rei? To crush the life out of someone lesser
than you and end their life.} Tabris seethed.

{SILENCE TABRIS!! STAY AWAY FROM HER! YOU HAVE TAINTED HER ENOUGH!
BEGONE!!} Kooriichi's voice interceded and forced Tabris' mind away.

Rei looked forward to see the crushed plug in her hands. Upon closer
observation, she saw an arm poking out from the wreckage, covered with
dripping blood. Looking down, she noticed that her hands were covered
with blood as well.

"REI! WAKE UP!" Misato screamed. The blood on her hands was gone. But
the person in the plug was still there. She was still in Iraq and the
pilot of an EVA that nearly killed her was right there.

"I... I have killed." She whispered to herself.

*************************************************

The report came to Gendou's desk a few hours later. The pilot inside
the EVA was the leader himself. His condition was perceived as fatal and
was later pronounced dead once he was gotten to an infirmary.

Putting the report on his desk, he took off his glasses, and rubbed his
eyes. Everything was not going as well as he had planned. Could he
really have gone too far by mixing the genes of Yui and Adam.

All that mattered now was that the madman was stopped, the missiles
were disabled, and the rest of the leader's men were arrested.

Yet... how come he started to feel less and less inclined to continue
the HCP?

*************************************************

The night after the mission, both Misato and Shinji walked back into
the apartment in a rather strong silence.

Asuka and Penpen saw them both walk into the apartment and was about to
greet them when she saw their rather pensive looks.

"Hey guys... uh, what's wrong?" She asked holding the penguin. They
told her what happened, and her grip on the penguin gently slipped.
"Wonder girl... killed... someone?"

"Yes... her orders were to just capture the leader of this terrorist
group, but for some reason... she just lost it and killed the guy. We
don't even know why."

Asuka sat back down on the floor, almost as if she remained in shock.
{Geez... if Wonder Girl just let go when she slapped me... would I still
be alive?}

At that time, the telephone rang, since Misato was too busy with her
own thoughts to bother with recent events, Shinji ran to get it.

	"Moshi moshi."

	"Konban wa Shinji-kun."

	"Oh, evening Kaworu-san."

"Are you well? You seem to have been shaken since the mission ended."

	"Well... no. Not really."

"That's understandable. Do you still wish to go along with the idea of
a sleep over? I can understand with everything and all."

Shinji thought of what he saw and heard earlier. He heard Rei,
screaming as if she was possessed. Tearing apart the other EVA as if she
had gone berserk, just like he did with the fourth angel. He did not
bother to hide it. He was afraid of her. He needed someone to talk to
and confide in.

"No. It's alright. I'll ask Misato about it tonight and tell you
tomorrow at school."

"Thank you Shinji. You have no idea how good it feels to be able to
talk to someone you can trust." Kaworu said with a sigh of relief.

Shinji smiled at the fact that he knew there was someone he could trust
and could trust him back.

At Kaworu's apartment, the boy smiled and put the telephone down. With
that done, he started to frown.

	{Tabris... how could you?!}

	{Easily.}

	{The pilot was no older than we were! He was just a boy!}

{Yes... he 'was' a boy. A boy, following the diluted footsteps of those
fool that came before him. Like his predecessor. Following a fool's
dream. His death was meant to happen.}

	{And you used Rei to do it! I can not believe you!}

{I am sorry if I displease you Kaworu, but he was willing to destroy
the world for his fool's dream. We are too close to Adam to let some
self absorbed ape, get in our way. Besides... it is not our hands that
are stained with blood.}

	{Quite the opposite. You are the one who prodded Rei into killing.}

	{She allowed herself to be driven to that end. She too is guilty.}

	{That still gives you no reason to think you are blameless!}

	{I never said I was. I was simply ensuring our path to Adam is clear.}

	{At the cost of life of the innocent?}

{None of these humans know innocence. They have not gone what we have
in order just to find a way home. These humans already have the way, yet
most of the simply disregard it. It is no big loss if He looses one that
perverts His ideals to some ridiculous extreme. Good night!}

{Tabris! TABRIS!} Like before, it was of no use as Tabris' mind went
dormant once more.

Kaworu wanted to scream. He would never prod another into committing
such a sin. Even Rei. Yet, the deed has been done and the only thing
they could do was hope that God would be forgiving.

*************************************************

The next morning, Rei found herself very cold. Even as the first few
rays of light went through the window and touched her, she felt no
warmer.

She had killed. In cold-blood no less. She had allowed Tabris to
control her and kill a boy no older than she was. She could see blood on
her hands appear and vanish at random on her hands.

She felt cold. Yet, this was not like the cold one feels when one
touches ice. A cold tears at the very heart of one's soul.

She wanted to be away from the cold. She wanted to be warm, not cold.
She wanted to be with others, not alone. She wanted to see others, not
be alone. She wanted to hear others, not the silence. She wanted to
speak with others, no speak in silence. She wanted to be with Shinji,
not alone.

Shinji. She felt warmth at the thought of him. The sight of his face
brought warmth. The joy in his voice brought warmth. The touch of his
hand brought warmth. He brought warmth. She wanted the warmth that
Shinji brought. The warmth that Shinji was.

She wanted to get to school. To see others. To see Shinji again. Yet,
there was more. What would he think about what she did before? Would be
act different? She hoped not.

*************************************************

At school, Shinji walked to his desk and as he stared at the sky
through the windows, he wondered how he would react to Rei. That was
when he realized he was sitting in her seat. The door opened and there
she was.

Rei paused at seeing Shinji in her seat. However, snapped out of it
when he quickly jumped out and into his usual seat. She looked to him
and felt that warmth that usually came with his presence vanish.

Turning forward, she walked to her seat, set down her books, and sat.
Unlike all the times before, she did not even bother to look at anything
or anyone. It was, as she feared. Shinji was scared of her. And because
of a mistake, her one chance of knowing what it was like to be like
everyone else, was lost.

*************************************************

At lunch, Shinji sat alone once more. Kaworu was kind enough to sit
beside him and eat his lunch beside him, but something was still nagging
at the base of Shinji's mind.

	"Shinji-kun."

	"Um, uh Hai?"

"You seem pensive. Are you all right?"

"Hai. I'm fine. It's just that last mission kinda shook me up."

"As did it me as well. Yet, there is nothing more we can do about it.
And we must move on, lest the past drags us down with it. Oh and did you
ever ask Misato-san about spending the night?"

Shinji's face suddenly brightened, "Oh yeah. I did and she said it was
fine. But I had to be back early the next morning."

Kaworu smiled and replied, "Well then, I certainly look forward to it."

Shinji nodded in agreement and then looked over to his right to see Rei
watching him, but then she left. He had no idea why she was doing this,
but somehow, he did not want to know.

Had Shinji known, he would have seen that Rei wanted to talk to him.
Yet, when she noticed that he was already with Kaworu, she turned and
ran when he saw her.

At that time, she began to feel moisture on her face coming from her
eyes. In addition, she was beginning to sniff and inhale more frequently
than usual. She wiped the moisture from her face and wondered the reason
how they came to be.

It was then she figured it was the hurt that she felt inside and even
then, she could not understand it. Why was she acting this way? Was it
the cold she felt earlier this morning, but only getting worse? She was
so confused. She wanted to know, to understand, but all sources of help
were gone.

*************************************************

That evening, Shinji and Kaworu both laid upon the ground in the
latter's apartment. Both the starlight and the moon giving them light.

"I should not be letting you do this." Kaworu said turning to his
companion on the floor. "It's like a guest becoming a sibling where you
treat them less than your friends."

Shinji laughed a bit and replied, "I don't mind it."

Kaworu smile slowly vanished when he asked, "On the phone, you
seemed... almost scared. What's wrong?"

Shinji then felt the apprehension rise once more, but sighed and
figured it was he who he wanted to confide in, "Well... it's just what
Rei did. I heard her scream over the radio... and it sounded so much
like me."

"You are scared because she is just about as capable as killing another
person as you are?" Kaworu said.

"In a way, yes. It's just that I don't know when I am going to snap and
do something like that. I'm scared."

Kaworu was silent. He knew the real reason why, yet he could not really
explain it to Shinji. It hurt Kaworu to talk with Shinji when he was
planning something that was going against what he wanted. It made him
feel no better than Tabris at times, but he could not help it. Kaworu
had no wish to hurt Shinji.

"Kaworu-san... you ok?" Shinji asked leaning close to his friend.

He blinked and nodded. "Sorry, it's just that I have been occupied much
recently. Now a days, I just seem to have a hard time trying to think
straight."

Shinji blinked and tilted his head a bit, "But you always seem to know
what you're doing."

"Sad to say Shinji-kun... but I'm just as human as you are, more than
capable of fault and error. To err is human, am I right?"

"Maybe... but not all the time."

"Of course. Yet, that's the wonderful thing about being human."

	"To err?" Shinji blinked.

Kaworu still smiled, "Yes. When we err, we see what did wrong and learn
from that. That in turn makes us wiser. If we did not err and were
perfect in every respect, life would not be worth living."

Shinji retorted. "Sometimes we don't get a chance to learn from out
mistakes."

Kaworu eyes narrowed, but the mischievous smile remained, "Well, that
makes the play of life all the more exciting, doesn't it? It provides
man with caution in his deeds and works."

Shinji blinked. He had no clue that Kaworu sometimes thought of life as
just a play or a game, "Life doesn't seem to be the way we want it to
be, so it becomes torture for some people. Like mine was."

"Yet, we as humans, are capable of adapting to our situation. No one
can control how we react. If a beloved friend or loved one dies, only we
can decided whether to let their death become the main focus of our
lives, or know that where ever they are, they're in a better place and
we should move on." Kaworu said back with a very serious look on his
face.

"Easier said than done." Shinji said looking up to the ceiling. "I've
lost loved ones too." What he didn't expect was that Kaworu wrapped an
arm under his head and took his shoulder gently.

Shinji was rather shocked, but yet as Kaworu leaned his head against
his, he heard the albino boy whisper, "As have I." It wasn't what Kaworu
said that made Shinji think about this, but the way he said it. The
sadness in his voice made it clear to Shinji that he lost a loved one
like he did.

Also, Shinji felt strange being held by Kaworu. His touch was never
harsh, quick, or demanding. It was gentle, slow, and giving. It was
something he never though he could experience before. Yet, the
experience with Rei a while ago before also spoke strongly in his mind.

He felt good being in Kaworu's embrace, but there was something wrong.
It was that brief second he saw Rei earlier that day. It looked like,
Rei was... crying? He was only able to see her for a second before she
left. If that was true, was he the reason why?

It was nice to know that there was someone else who cared about him.
Like Kaworu did, but from all that he and Rei went through, could she
really care for him too?

Still in Kaworu's embrace, Shinji curled up into a ball as hard as he
could and fell asleep. All the while his mind was in a state of complete
confusion. Not even knowing that Kaworu could sense his confusion,
Shinji slept dreamlessly and asked those same questions over and over.

{Shinji-kun...} Kaworu thought, his smile no longer there. He knew that
Shinji was confused about all this. After Tabris had gotten into Rei's
mind, he found that single embrace they both shared before meeting
Armisael.
