crude attemps are artificial insemination to succeed? I recall reading that
it can't work that way.

Actually, it can. The odds of it working are about the same as for regular
sex. I.e. about 300:1 against. Statistically speaking, that is. And
factoring into that the fact that most sex occurrs when the woman is *not*
fertile. The odds get a lot better if the girl knows when she's fertile and
is trying.
