It does indeed; it's a time-honored approach to a difficult problem.
Though if I were going to write such a story, I think I'd go for the
more believable approach of killing Akane off in the beginning.

Now the real challenge is... can anyone do it _without_ either killing off
Akane or characterizing her as an abusive maniac?I'm trying ^_^ read

	Indeed, how can Ranma and Akane get split up without resorting to 
death or character distortion.  I assume Love potions and such are 
considered extreme cheating of course.  And so would the more subtle 
alternate history storyies.  Hmm.  The Burakimin concept has beendone in a 
few ficts, I'm not convinced that it would be enough to make Akane break up 
with Ranma, but it's a possibility.  Well conceivably if the honor or 
continued survival of the Tendo and or Saotome families were at stake and 
every attempt to find an alternative to marrage failed.  Didn't the Ranma 
who married Ukyo in Converging series marry her to protect the Tendo's?  
Still as to a way of having Ranma and Akane break up of their own free 
will...  Maybe if Ranma became convinced that he was destined to live a 
chaotic life full of suffering he might break up with her to try and 
protect her, but then he'd go off alone to protect everyone.  Besides as 
Ranma said in the episode where Happosei was dying, he beleives that people 
make their own destiny, which combined with his stobornness would make him 
fight whatever fate had in store for him for the rest of his life.  I 
honestly can't think of any trick to break Ranma and Akane up.  Takahashi's 
put them through too much for there to be any simple way to split them up.

It could also be argued that if they have been through so much together,
and still haven't sonfessed their feelings, then they really aren;t meant
for each other.  Sure, Takahashi doesn't take that angle, fanfics can
pretty much follow any logic the author wants (within reason, or course).

Ways to split them up?

1)  Ranma falls in love with someone else, for any normal reason.
2)  Akane falls in love with someone else, for any normal reason.
3)  Akane decides that she's sick of the chaos that Ranma seems to bring,
decides that she can't live that way for the rest of her life, and breaks
off the engagement in a state of rationality (as opposed to all the other
times she's broken the engagement in anger).
4)  The dojo burns down.  Since the engagement was intended to united the
families to run the dojo, it could be argued that there is no longer a
basis for the engagement.
5)  Everybody dies.
6)  Ranma goes into Neko-ken mode permanently.

Why not?

Oh, as for the maniac comment a concerning the "sleeping with Beldandy"
scene, does anyone see a way for Akane to not get mad at Ranma and still
be IC?
