As I said, I'm taking a shot at this one. This is *very* rough, and
there's not much to C&C yet. Let me know what you think; I'll be
writing more of this tomorrow.

	Prologue

-Tokyo, 1995

	"BAKA ODANGO ATAMA!"
Three girls seated around the table at Hikawa Shrine grew sweatdrops
as the raven-haired priestess Hino Rei whapped the late blond arrival
upside the head with her broom. Tsukino Usagi shuddered for a moment,
before bursting out in tears. "REEEEEIIIIIII!!!! You're always so
MEAN to me!! BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!"
Rei threw down the broom in disgust and stomped back over to the
table. Usagi followed shortly, her brief bawling spell passed like a
sudden rain. She seated herself at the table, pointedly turning away
from the shrine maiden.
"You really need to start at least *trying* to get your act
together, Usagi."
"Oh, be quiet, Rei!" Usagi huffed. She dug around in the pile of
books she was carrying, and produced a manga. Soon, she was lost in
its pages, laughing like a hyena.
Rei snapped her pencil. "Ooooooh, that's IT! Either pipe down or get
out, Usagi! What's your problem anyway? Do you have ramen for brains
or something?"
Usagi slammed down her manga, and stuck her tongue out at Rei, who
reciprocated. The tongue duel ended with Rei mashing a textbook into
Usagi's face. "Maybe if you tried READING one of these every now and
then, you'd be able to think of more than that to defend yourself
with!"
Usagi turned her back on Rei, and crossed her arms. "Why should I
listen to someone with such a horrible personality?"
"What's wrong with my personality?" Rei demanded hotly.
Usagi spun around and pointed a finger at her. "You could stand to
have a lot LESS FORCEFUL ONE, for one thing!"
Suddenly, there was a bright flash of light. The five girls all
froze. "What the--?" Kino Makoto wondered.
Before any of them could react, the light settled around Rei. She
began screaming.
"Rei...Rei!!" Usagi screamed, reaching for her brooch.
The air before Rei shimmered, and the fiery sigil of Mars rose from
her forehead, expanding briefly before evaporating into the light.
The priestess also known as Sailor Mars collapsed in a heap.

-Tokyo-3, 2015

"...and another thing...HEY! Look at me when I'm yelling at you! Are
you even listening?" Souryuu Asuka Langley popped a vein in her
forehead as she leaned over the rather bored-looking albino seated at
a desk in the classroom.
	"No," said albino replied quietly.
Asuka clenched her fists. "I swear, Wonder Girl, one of these days
I'll figure out what makes you tick, if I have to cut you open and
dig around in your guts!"
"I don't think Commander Ikari would appreciate that," Ayanami Rei
said absently. Asuka just shook her head in disgust and walked away.
"How can you be so calm with Asuka screaming at you like that,
Ayanami?" Ikari Shinji asked from his place near the wall.
Rei shrugged. "It doesn't bother me," she said.

Across the room, Asuka fumed while her friend Hikari attempted to
console her. "Stupid," she said. "Why is she so damn strange? Look at
her! Is she some kind of space case?"
Hikari laughed. "That's just the way Ayanami is, Asuka-chan. It's
just her personality."
"Yeah? Well it sucks. She should have a lot more...aggressive
personality than that."
The room suddenly lit up. Everyone looked around, wondering what was
going on. "Is it an Angel?" Asuka said out loud.
"I don't think so," Shinji said.
The light began condensing around Rei, who blinked, then began to
scream. "Ikari-kun...help me!" she cried out. Shinji moved closer to
her desk, but froze at what he saw.
For a brief instant, a blazing cross rose from Rei's body, then it
was gone. The albino slumped in her seat, her head thudding against
the deskboard.

	-SPIRIT ZERO-

	Chapter One

"Rei!? Rei-chan, are you alright? Rei! Wake up!"
The girl groaned softly, and the crowd around her backed up a step.
"She needs room to breathe," one girl said.
"Speak to us, Rei. Are you alright?"
Rei opened her eyes. "H...hai," she said softly. She blinked, and
looked around. "Where...am I?" she asked.
The others exchanged worried glances. "You're at the shrine," a
blond girl with an unusual hairstyle said.
"Shrine..." Rei said, her voice quiet. She began picking herself up
off the floor, and frowned at her clothes. "I...I don't recognize
these clothes I'm wearing," she said.
The other four girls blinked, and looked at each other. One of them
pulled out a palmtop computer, and scanned Rei. She frowned. "I'm not
reading any injury, or trauma, but..."
"Could she have amnesia?" the tall auburn-haired girl asked.
"Amnesia...but I remember who I am..." Rei said quietly. She looked
around, blinking. *Who are these girls?* she wondered. *What's
happened to me?*
The one with the unusual hairstyle stepped in front of her, and
looked her in the eyes. "Rei-chan?"
	"Hai."
"So you DO know who you are! I'm relieved!" The others showed signs
of relief as well, but still seemed edgy.
"Hai." Rei paused. "Excuse me...I need to report in now."
This made everyone blink. "Report in? Anou..."
"You sure that computer is working right, Ami-chan?"
"Of course. But still..." Ami began working frantically with her
computer.
"Where is my card?" Rei asked. "I need my card to report in."
"Anou...report in where, Rei-chan?" the other blond in the room
asked.
"To NERV," Rei said. The others looked around in confusion.
"What's a NERV?" the tall one asked.
"An English word for part of the body?" the blond with the hair bow
shrugged.
Ami stepped forward, and peered into Rei's eyes. "Please state your
name," she said.
	"Ayanami Rei."
"NANI!?" both blonds and the tall girl shouted. Ami did not react.
	"Where do you live?"
	"Tokyo-3."
"Three? There's only one Tokyo, isn't there?" the blond with the
unusual hairstyle said.
Ami frowned. "What is the year?"
	"2015."
"Okay, this is getting creepy," the other blond announced.
Ami rubbed her chin thoughtfully. "Rei," she said softly, "It's
1995."
It was now Rei's turn to blink. "It can't be..."
Ami nodded. "This is Tokyo. The only Tokyo."
Rei's eyes widened. She pushed past Ami, and ran for the shrine
entrance.
Outside, the birds chirped merrily, as the sakura blew on the
breeze. On the street below, people walked, biked, and drove back and
forth...many people, families, all carefree and happy.
Rei sank to her knees. "I don't understand."

	*****

"Hey! HEY! Wake up already! Stupid, deaf, crazy girl!"
Rei opened her eyes, and winced at the light which was shining right
into them. To make matters worse, whoever was shining it was also
screaming in her ear. She lashed out at the light with one hand,
irritated. "Cut off that damn light already, I'm awake. Wanna lower
the volume while you're at it?"
	"I said wa--HUH!?"
"Rei? Are you...are you alright?" asked a timid male voice.
Rei lifted her head, and looked around. The world slowly came into
focus--she was sitting at a school desk, with a red-haired girl
holding a flashlight standing in front of her, and a short-haired boy
looming...no, looming was too strong a word for his presence. More
like...well, whatever he was doing, he was doing it about a meter
away from her. "I'm...I'm fine, I think...where am I?" she asked.
"You're in school, baka! You fainted!" the redhead snapped.
"HEY! No need to be so rude! Sheesh," Rei said. "What's your
problem, anyway?"
The redhead blinked. "What did you say?"
"I said what's your PROBLEM? What's wrong, can't understand simple
Japanese?" Rei said, rising to her feet and shaking a fist at the
other girl. She stopped when she caught a good look at her fist.
"What the--?"
"What is it? What's wrong?" the boy asked, moving closer.
"I...I..." Rei stammered, looking at her hand strangely.
"It's your hand, Wonder Girl, what's so interesting about it?" the
loud girl said, crossing her arms.
"Asuka!" the boy hissed. "Not now. Something's obviously bothering
her."
"Oh, can it, Shinji! She's just bothered as it is."
Rei moved on from her inspection of her hand, to an inspection of
her clothes. *Something is very wrong here.* "Could someone hand me a
mirror, please?" she asked.
"A mirror? What, did you suddenly find vanity?" the one called Asuka
asked.
"Just get me a damn mirror!" Rei shouted.
"Okay, FINE! Sheesh, what turned you into a bitch all of a sudden?"
Asuka huffed. She reached into her handbag and produced a compact.
"Here."
Rei snatched it angrily from her hand. *I won't kill her for that
bitch comment, I won't kill her...* Rei looked into the mirror, and
gasped in shock, dropping it. Shinji quickly caught the compact
before it hit the ground, and passed it to Asuka, who took it without
a word.
"What's the matter, Wonder Girl?" Asuka said. "Find out you're
uglier than you thought you were?"
Rei shook her head. Her eyes began brimming with tears.
"What...what's going on here? I don't understand...it doesn't make
sense..." Seeking any comfort, any morsel of security, she lunged
forward and latched onto Shinji. "What's HAPPENED TO ME!?" she
screamed, sobbing.
Shinji flushed, began to stammer a reply, then closed his mouth and
simply held the sobbing girl. Asuka scowled at him, and turned away,
making a show of fuming. *What's gotten into her all of a sudden?*
Asuka wondered. *This is very bizarre...*
