Let us assume that the general history of the world goes as so:

Legendary, mystical times with gods and free use of magic with a small
human population.

A dark age with larger human populations using religion against dark
forces.

Modern times with a vast human population discarding religion because it
doesn't seem to do anything for them.

Obviously then, the very presence of humans disrupts magical forces and
strong religious belief enhances this effect.

The result: wizards go off in the wilderness, far from any other persons
in order to work on their magic and Mr Cthulhu doesn't visit Time's
square.

Any sufficiently cool technology is indistinguishable from religion.
