Not quite.  It's name is derieved from the first use, which was used to
destroy a dragon.  I know the "slave" part is a corruption of the original
name, which I believe is "Slay", but I could be wrong - I'm kind of fuzzy on
that part.

Its the "Slave" part that's corrupted. Lina-chan remarks on it during one of the
first 13 episodes of Slayers(original series)

Besides, Dragu sounds enough like Dragon anyway.

Yeah, I've seen subs with Dragu ;)
