Seraphim's Judgment:
Part 9a:
Shinji's Angels

A crossover between
Neon Genesis Evangelion and
Teknoman.

Within the holding areas of the four man-made demons, three of the
four souls conversed, while the fourth stayed uncharacteristically
quiet.

<Poor Ninohi. She can't even connect with Asuka anymore. No wonder
she's so quiet. > Yui of Unit 01 EVA said to her companions.

<True, until her pilot can let the past be as it is, there is no
hope for either becoming one again. > Koorichi said quietly.

<It gets worse. From what I can got from Shinji, they got another
pilot for Ninohi. > Yui whispered to the other two.

<No way! Yui, please tell me you're joking! > Sanshi exclaimed. The
other two quickly silenced him so Ninohi could not hear. Koorichi hissed
as quietly as she could.

<Be silent! We don't know how she will react if she heard you.
Besides, let's hope that it doesn't really come to that. > With that,
the other two souls released Sanshi's _voice_ and allowed him to speak
in hushed tones.

<I surely hope so. Touji's been worrying about Asuka for quite a
while. It's been getting in his way. I mean, what if an angel comes that
would have been defeated if all four of us were out there and only two
were functioning properly? >

Yui sighed and replied, <Well, let's not think about that. All we
can do is hope that Asuka pulls it together. >

The alarms wailed and the three remaining pilots ran to the plugs'
places over the EVAs. Apparently, another angel was found.

*************************************************

Around the central districts of Tokyo-3, three passages opened up
from the ground. From each one, a man made giant emerged. One purple,
the next blue, and the last being black. Each one armed with the best
weapons they could hold.

The purple was armed with the same weapon that had been given to
him the in the last battle. The blue was given not only another version
of the positron rifle, but a remodeled shield as well. The black carried
a rather large handgun as well as a long glowing sword in his hands.

The glowing disc suddenly turned 45 degrees and threw a large
volley of thin _sheets_ of light. Two of the three EVAs jumped out of
the way, while the third deflected the shots using his sword. Sending
the projectiles else where and into a few buildings. Every building that
was hit, suddenly found the upper half of it sliding off. It appeared
that the weapon of the angel was somewhat based on a principle of the
progressive weapons.

"Alright, Touji, see if you can distract the angel long enough so
that Shinji and Rei can take sniper positions. And all three of you
prepare to put your AT Fields just in case. Move out!" Misato ordered
from Central Dogma.

Touji nodded and thinking of the best way to distract it, charged.
More of the angel's weapon were shot and struck out of the way with
Touji's sword. When he was within range, Touji jumped over another
volley of shots and swung with all his might.

The blade collided with the AT Field and seemed to hold on despite
all the strength he put into the blow.

Meanwhile, both Shinji and Rei took the positions told by their
commander and aimed their weapons. Since Touji wasn't in Rei's way, she
began to fire, unlike Shinji. The fourth child was in the way of the
third's line of fire.

Closing one eye, Shinji took careful aim and said into the comm,
"Ok Touji... JUMP!" and pulled the trigger. The stream of positive
energy screamed forth and would have hit Touji, had he not jumped out of
the way. Using both the strength of the EVA and the boosters on the
EVA's shoulder blades, he landed beside Shinji, powered down the prog
sword, and took aim with the hand gun.

With relentless attacks from all three EVAs, it appeared that the
angel's AT Field would surely fall. Just as the next volley would have
hit the angel, it flew up above the line of fire and threw several
sheets in response.

All three EVAs scrambled to get out of the way from the rain of
death from above. The third and fourth child put up their fields which
slowed the shots enough to move. Sadly, Rei was not so fortunate. Even
with the improved shield, it was of no help as the collision between the
shield and the angel's weapon threw Rei across the city, with her
umbilical cord severed.

Now that one of the angel's three attackers was indisposed, it
continued to press it's advantage against Rei. It flew over to Rei's EVA
and started to spin, the double helix on it's edge was beginning to
break apart.

On the other side of the city, both boys made a mad dash to try and
stop the Angel, but knew that they would not get there in time. Shinji's
heart was pounding, he had to save Rei, and here he was, too far away to
do anything. He didn't know what the angel was going to do, but he knew
that whatever it was, it wasn't going to be good.

Rei blinked several times and looked up through the eyes of her EVA
to see Armisael above her. She looked to her right to see that she had
less than two minutes remaining in her internal battery. Returning to
the angel above, she knew what was to happen next. Armisael would use
her to try and get to Adam, and what was worse was that she could do
nothing. Except for allowing it to fuse with her and active the
self-destruct sequence on the EVA.

Yet, something was holding her back. She looked to see her hand
quivering. She blinked and realized something... she was scared. Scared
for Shinji and Touji. Scared of Armisael using her to hurt Shinji.
Looking forward, she opened the panel in front and saw the switch that
would destroy her EVA, along with Armisael. She would NOT let it hurt
Shinji.

She placed her hand over the small red panel, and before hitting
the switch that would end her life, she remembered him. Of all things,
that single, warm, and wonderful embrace they shared a while ago.
Somehow, that was one of the best things she could remember. She closed
her eyes and whispered, "Sayonara...Shinji-kun."

She was suddenly tossed back into her seat as she looked up. There,
standing on the top of her prone EVA, was an armored person, with six
wings sticking out of the person's back. The light that encased the
person's body was almost blinding, yet not so bright she couldn't see
what exactly was going on.

The light was holding back Armisael! Pushing against it the same
way she, Shinji, and Asuka did with the eleventh angel. The light became
stronger as the real angel pushed back Armisael further. That was what
gave Shinji and Touji the time they needed to get Rei out of there.

When they got to a safe distance, Shinji scrambled out of his EVA
and ran to the semi-ejected plug of Rei's. He tore open the entry hatch
and saw her there, still as a stone, until she saw him.

After EVA Unit's 01 and 03 got 00 to a safe enough distance, Shinji
opened up the communications between his EVA and what little power Rei's
Unit had left. He saw her, breathing the LCL as quickly as she could
from the panic she felt that came from nowhere at seeing her rescuer.

"Aya Rei, are you alright?!" he said, trying to keep his calm. She
looked to him, a little surprised at seeing him as the one who saved
him, and then smiled a bit.

"Arigatou, Shinji-kun." She whispered into the LCL. Though she was not
in his arms like last time, it certainly felt that way, seeing him
relieved to see her unhurt. Before, she would have given no thought of
her own life, but after experiencing a few of the many things that most
normal people could, she wanted to know more and lose that cold feeling
of emotionlessness.

Back there, when Armisael nearly fused with her, she had felt fear. True
fear. Fear for losing her life, only after when she found an avenue to
so much more. Now, she felt another new feeling. She believed that
people called it 'relief'. And she liked it. These new emotions also
lead to many questions as well. How would Commander Ikari react if he
knew? Should she try and follow these unusual feelings to their end? Be
them good or bad?

Yet, somehow, there would be time to find the answers later. Also, she
felt too relieved to even think of a reason why she was that way.

*************************************************

Seeing that her first objective was complete, Seraphim suddenly
flew out from under the angel to continue her next objective. Destroying
Armisael. She flew up to the roof of one of the higher remaining
buildings and prepared for her foe's next attack.

As expected, the angel shot another slew of razor thin shots at the
light that dared interfere with it's mission. Seraphim pulled out the
same sword that ended Bardial's life and knocked away several of it's
shots. In response, she fired several energy blasts from her hand.

Knowing what to do, the angel inverted it's AT Field, caught the
blasts, and threw them straight back at her. Also, it fired more of it's
weapon, not intending to miss.

The shots hitting the building created the smoke screen which
blinded Seraphim from seeing the second assault. She had no time to
defend as several of the razor sharp _sheets_ went across the junction
between her left arm and shoulder. Not only that, but a single right
wing, and two of her left, shared the same fate. Both Seraphim and
Nodoka felt the pain that raced through their bodies like liquid fire.
The scream of pain reverberated throughout Tokyo-3.

Touji and everyone in Central Dogma looked on in horror as the
light that had saved them a few times in true defeat, was now being
defeated in front of them. Gendou pushed up his glasses again and
figured that who ever it was, was paying the price for interfering in
this war.

Seraphim collapsed and tried to clutch at an arm that wasn't there.
The arm fell off the side of the building and the severed wings
dissipated in the wind, no longer being a part of they body they
belonged to. She tried to get up using the single arm, but only was able
to turn herself onto her back to see Armisael hovering over her. Almost
jeering at her defeat.

She wouldn't be beaten that easily. Several plate on her shoulders,
chest-plate, and remaining gauntlet opened to reveal thirteen crystals,
glowing blue. It would have been sixteen had she her other arm as well,
sadly, she had to make do with what she had remaining. A sphere of blue
light soon covered her place on the roof and grew larger.

At that time, Armisael made a decision to do the same thing to her
what it was about to do to Rei. It started to spin and the helix broke
up once more. Yet, didn't get any farther than that as the sphere that
contained Seraphim exploded upward, creating a literal volcano of
anti-matter. The sheer size of the blast made the city seem small. The
sixteenth angel was no more.

Within NERV, everyone stared dumbfounded at the immense display of
power. Save for Gendou, who narrowed his eyes and reassessed the
situation. <Interesting.> he thought, also thinking about the questions
that accompanied this new player. What were the motives? Did it have
some ideas of it's own? Or was it really a messenger of God, sent to
help them? Or to warn and divert them from their present course? It
appeared that waiting was the only course of action they could do.

Back on the roof, Seraphim made another attempt to get up. It only
resulted in her falling off the side of the building. With no strength
left, she could neither scream or fly. At least they both did the best
they could and hoped that their end would be quick. Yet, instead of
hitting the concrete, she felt a giant pair of cupped hands were holding
her.

She looked up to see the black and demonic face of EVA Unit 03 and
smiled beneath her helmet. From inside, Touji could see she was in pain
and hated himself that he could do nothing. Holding the angel like a
child holding a small animal, he knelt down opened his hands open just
enough to let her get her dismembered arm.

Looking back at him, she nodded once and crawled out from between
his hands. She took a final look at the giant black demon and walked
away.

Misato's face appeared to Touji's right as he saw the angel walk
away out of his sight. "Hey, Touji... why did you do that?"

He sighed, smiled, and turned to his commander, "Well, I never
really got a chance to thank her for saving me. Until now that is. It
just felt like the right thing to do, you know?" He turned to the
direction the angel left and only saw the setting sun. He started to
shake his head. What a day!

*************************************************

The door of Seraphina Brown's door was struck with urgency. In haste,
she opened the door to reveal a horribly injured Nodoka.

"Nodoka-san!" she exclaimed as she caught her companion from
falling. Trying to keep her composure, Sera carried her friend over to a
clear portion of the floor and laid her there while she went to get the
medic kit. From what she could see, Nodoka's left shoulder was cut
severely, and had several gashes on her back.

Just when Sera was about to peel off Nodoka's blood stained kimono to
wash the wound, Nodoka's blood covered hand grabbed her wrist. Despite
the amount of pain she went through, Nodoka kept a calm face as she told
Sera, "We... don't need.. that. Remember?"

Sera blinked a few times, until Nodoka put her hand on the wound. That
was when she knew what the elder woman was getting at. So, placing her
other hand over the slash, she concentrated her healing power of the
Teknos into the wound. Seconds later, a gentle blue glow came from her
hands and slowly closed the injury.

Minutes later, the wounds were closed and Nodoka's condition went
stable. Sera turned around, fell on her bottom, and turned to give an
exasperated look at Nodoka. This whole ordeal was giving her a headache.

That was when one of Nodoka's eyes opened, she frowned, and said,
"You're not the one doing the fighting!" With those last words, the
elder woman fell silent, falling asleep.

Sera blinked a few times, then sighed. She didn't want to admit it,
but Nodoka was right. She hated getting berated. Especially by
cantankerous old women. A fist out of nowhere bapped her on the back of
her head. She turned to see Nodoka still asleep, but her thought to Sera
was loud and clear.

     <I heard that! >

*************************************************

The next day, all five of the children were placed in test plugs to
check for synchronization. A fifth was made with the arrival of Kaworu
so all could take the test at the same time.

In the control room, Misato and Maya took final look at the screen
where it showed all of the children faces with their eyes closed.
Clearly in concentration.

     "Begin." Misato ordered.

Maia punched up the necessary sequence of numbers and the five
children found their minds trying to merge with a pseudo-EVA. Five
minutes passed slowly as the numbers next to Maia's screen came up.

"Sir, the results are in." Misato then walked over as the smaller
woman spoke out the results. "Rei 50%, Asuka 24%, Shinji 53%, Touji 49%,
and Kaworu... oh my..."

Misato looked over Maia's shoulder to see what was the cause of her
gasp. She found her eyes widening as well.

Both women looked up at Kaworu's silent face and wondered. What
exactly was it that enabled him to arrange any syncro ratio freely, of
his own will?

End of Part 9a.

[Warhammer comes out slowly, making sure that the angry fans are
calm by this time.]

WH: {Revision notes} For this chapter, I changed a few more things
than the last. For example, I am taking the Shinji/Rei thing a lot
slower, I reexamined the original characters and then realized my folly.
Oops. Also, I was informed that 100% would most likely absorb any pilot
foolish enough to get that high, and after checking what he originally
did in the anime, I figured it would make a lot more sense to be more
faithful to it.

Also, I made the pure amount of power the Seraphim had a bit more clear
than in the first try. It was made rather obvious to me by valued
prereaders and MSTers.

Lastly, I added a bit more to Gendou's assessment of Seraphim. Make it
look like there was a third player in this game.

On a final note, expect the Shinji's Angels arc to go to at
least part 'f' or at most 'h'. Man this is getting long.

{Original notes}You actually thought I was going to kill Rei? GET REAL!
After all I did for her and Shinji? Come on! Besides, I'd hate myself
until I fixed it, and this is the way it should have happened.

Next, we all know that Seraphim and Cherubim are pretty high on the
Christian Hierarchy of Angels, but it's likely they're not invincible.
If it were Gabriel or Michael, then it would be a different story all
together. But it's not, so I won't worry about it. If you're wondering
what the heck I'm talking about, it's my justification for hurting both
Seraphim and Nodoka.

I may be overstepping Rei's and Shinji's feelings for each other,
especially Rei. Yet, I would think that since she's so new to emotion,
that she wants to feel more. Especially with Shinji. If I am overdoing
it, let me know quick!

I looked over the outline for this chapter and realized that I had
to cut this into two chapters if I wanted to keep the Rei/Shinji/Kaworu
triangle in my story. I wonder just how long Kaworu kept his little
secret before everyone found out? Also, the next couple of chapters
talked about _Shinji's angels_ so they actually fit. I should be whacked
for using the title of that old show, Charlie's Angels. Oh brother!

Since I am not done with the entire chapter (meaning part
b,c,d,e,f, and possibly g), I won't put any of the questions that I
usually do when I finish a fic. One of the things I can tell you about
the next chapter is that you're going to see Gendou be a little more
OOC. Which may be a good thing. Until then my friends.
