I'm a firm believer in "there is no "one true way".I've written the middle
first and worked out from there, I've done the beginning and worked to the
end. I've heard tell of some pros who have to write the end and work
backward, just so they don't get off on tangents.  Whatever works for you
on any given story is how you should do it. 

I like to know what conditions are at the beginning and at the end, and
what high points, if any, I want to cover in between. I'll jot them down on
the blank piece of "paper", and then write whatever comes to me, when it
comes to me, to connect it all up. It's definitely not fast, but it works
for me.
