Neon Genesis Evangelion:
The End is the Beginning.
Prologue: The End of a Story
An EDF Production.
Written by Helix and Rune.
aka Travis Carr and Jonathan Lloyd.
"Our world is a thing that hates us already. For the pain and damage that
we have caused to her, if nothing else. Thus, it is a surprise that she
refused to allow SEELE to move humanity to a higher existence..."
Commander Shinji Ikari, 19 AR
Exert from Pilots Manual, as written by Shinji Ikari:
The Evangelion program could have said to be started in 2015 AD, by the old
reckoning. This is what the public is lead to believe, and what they will
continue to believe, until they can forgive us for the crimes that we have
committed against them. Because the Eva's are as much of the criminal as
SEELE was, however many lives they have saved.
It truly started in Antarctica in the year 1999. That was the year that
the Katsuragi expedition discovered what is believed to be ADAM at the south
pole. This truly was the end of the world, at least the world that we had
known and loved.
In the year 2000, the Second Impact occurred as ADAM was reduced to an
embryonic form, in order to reduce the damage that would result from the
Angels appearance. Yes, we knew about our enemies even back then...
From the form of Lillith, as well as the form of ADAM, the Eva's were
created. There were, of course, failures. Somewhere deep in what is left
of Terminal Dogma is a graveyards of failed Eva's... the failures of man's
attempt to become gods. As The Human Completion Project was our attempt to
play god as well.
And now your are an Evangelion Pilot. Selected from the millions of human
survivors, as the last hope for mankind. But, as a pilot you must know why
you fight. Reasons that no book could adequately tell you. Thus, the
reason for the classes and training courses. You are not just a pilot, not
just a face. Now you are the hope of millions. Go in peace, and God bless
you."
...
Ryan sat back, looking up from his pilots manual for a moment. So this was
part of the history behind the Evangelions, was it? Certainly not the most
fascinating thing at the moment, but worth reviewing sometimes. Sighing, he
looked around the room at the other recent accepted applicants. All of them
young, and all of them quite nervous. Well, he couldn't blame them, he was
as nervous as they were.
Finally the door swung open, revealing a tall, slightly haggard man. He
nearly brushed the top of the door, and he was definitely one of the close
combat pilots. But the one object that drew every ones attention was the
EDF logo adorning his shoulder.
"Alright recruits, LISTEN UP!" Everyone in the room snapped to attention,
as if prodded by a shock stick. "Thank you. Obviously you know why your
here, the days of Nerv have long past. Now, the first order of business is
to familiarize you with your new equipment. If you will please follow
me..." the sergeant turned and walked out the door he had entered.
All of the recruits were whispering now, excited noises of "you mean we're
going to see an Eva?" and "A real Eva, up close!" ran throughout the room.
Ryan leaned back and smiled. Of course, these kids were all excited about
seeing an Eva, as the closest that they had ever gotten to one was on TV.
Ryan lived close to the main battle zone, and had seen several Evas before.
Of course, he had never gotten to see one up close...
The group moved onto a platform just outside of the holding area that they
had occupied for the past hour. It had been terrible crampt, and Ryan hoped
that where ever they were going, they would get there soon. The lift gave a
shudder, and began its slow ascent. Ryan glanced at the lake of bright pink
liquid that lay off to the side of the lift, coolant from the look of it.
But what did they need so much coolant for?
The lift rose above the lake of coolant, and for the first time, Ryan saw
the Evangelions. Hundreds of them, spread throughout the lake of coolant.
Each of them had a small team of workers, ants at this range, swarming over
them, working repairs and tuning the great androids. Ryan felt a grin
spreading over his face as he looked across the lake, looking at his new
job.
"Gentlemen, welcome to the Evangelion Defense Force. Now if you'll wait
just a minute, we'll arrive at the dorms, and you can begin your training."

"The foundation of the Evangelion Defense Force could have been considered
as absolutely groundbreaking in the history of armed forces in human
civilization. At first, the need to use young children as pilots for the
Evangelion Force caused enormous amounts of resentment towards the EDF from
various sectors of society, but in times of great need, the force of
necessity could move mountains...."
The Beginning: The history of the EDF. 30 AR.
...35 AR... ...2135...
The new recruits had finally settled in, dividing up dorm rooms amongst
themselves. Ryan sighed as he entered the last unclaimed room, down at the
end of the cadets hall. He looked around at his ample accomidations, two
bunkbeds lined up against each wall, and dressers at the base of each.
Apparently his room mates had not arrived yet, so he took to settling
himself in. Time passed as Ryan unpacked his bags, pulling out a few music
CD's for the computer, a photo of his parents and brother that had been
taken off the coast of Florida, back before the days of the war. Finally
done unpacking, Ryan lay back across his bed and looked at the ceeling,
considering his options. Only half of the new recruits would be chosen as
combat pilots. And only three quarters of them were likely to survive the
brutal training in the weeks to come, the other either washing out... or
dying.
Ryan finally walked to the door, figuring that he had gotten off lucky and
not gotten any room mates. Well, sharing a room could be kind of fun, but
he knew that relations could wear thin after a time. Especially when the
cadets were stuck in the same rooms all day, and all night as well.
"All right scrubs, LISTEN UP!" The seargent bellowed. "My name is SARGENT
Stickly. And I dont want to hear Mr. Stickly, yo, or anything like that
directed my way. Sir is for your fellow Eva commanders, so you can call me
Sarge, or Sargent. Stick to it, do well, and I guarantee that we'll get
along well. If not..." Stickly cracked his knuckles meaningfully. "All
right, recruits, fall in! Your going to your first lesson in 20 minuites.
Be settled in by then and out in the meeting area in 20 minuites."
Ryan sighed, turing back into his room to enjoy the last few minuites of
non-military life left to him...
...
The professor droned on, and on, and on... Ryan caught himself just before
he nodded off. This history class had been boring so far, with the studies
of ancent wars and tatics that had been outdated with the construction of
the Evangelions. To Ryan, this had to be one of the most boring classes
yet. And it had just started ten minuites ago.
"Mr. Fusha, please answer the question."
Ryan jearked up, blinking in surprise. "I'm sorry, what did you say?"
"Mr. Fusha, please, what was the name of the battle that Napoleon was
defeated at?"
"Ummm... waterslide?" Ryan stammered.
"Close Mr. Fusha. It was called Waterloo. Its nice to see that the
lintcatcher of a brain of yours can catch even these small facts." The
professor nodded. "Class, I can see that your bored..." A hand shot up.
"Yes, Miss..."
"Ikari. Rei Langly Ikari. Professor-sensi, just why ARE we having this
class?" Ryan turned to see who was speaking. The girl was standing in the
back, with her dark brown hair pulled into a pair of pigtails. She had a
severe yet pretty face, which was doing its best to look bored out of its
mind.
"Ah, yes... Miss Ikari, this class is to teach you the value of history.
Combat in a Evangelion is certainly much diffrent that combat in those
ancient days, but one must realize that even the most insignificant lessons
in history can be very improtant under the right circumstances." the
professor looked at the sceptical Rei and continued. "My job is to teach
you to think for yourselves. And one day this information may become useful
to you, even if its usefulness is not immediately apparent. And if you are
done, Miss Ikari, will you please SIT DOWN???"
Rei dropped into her seat, and Ryan heard a whispered "Nice going sis."
before the professor resumed his lesson.
...
Finally the most anticipated class of the day had arrived... Evangelion
Orientation. Always taught by one of the more senior pilots, it was also
the one that dropped the most cadets. Apparently this class lasted four
HOURS, Ryan noted from his schedule. "Hey," he shouted to a boy standing
next to him of the walkway. "Why the heck is the Orientation class so
long?"
The boy turned and glanced at Ryan. "Ummm, apparently we do more than
learn about the Evas there. We service the Evas, learn technical
informations, as well as view some of the past engagements." the boy raked
his dark brown hair out of his eyes. "Myt dad told me about it a while
ago..."
Ryan looked the boy over. White shirt, jeans... rather normal boy.
Strange, considering that most Eva pilots children were reputated to be
rather strange. "So, was your dad a pilot?"
"Yeah..." was all that Ryan could hear before the lift emerged into the
cage area. A vast cavern at the bottom of the compound, the cage was a lake
of the pink coolant that Ryan had seen earlier. "Wait a second, why was
there coolant up above too?"
One of the students responded. "Why do you think, you baka? They
obviously need a ready bay, for rearming and such. So that bay is located
higher in the base." Ryan had a moment to notice Rei Ikari before she
vanished into the crowd of students.
Finally they came to a stop infront of one of the Evangelions. Ryan gazed
up at the head of the massive andriod, towering at least three stories above
them. Ryan let out a quiet "wow" as he examined the Eva, at a range that he
had never DREAMED.
Finally a bullhorn sounded, and a voice came over the speaker. "Greetings
cadets, my name is Leutenent Commander Samuel Johnson, and I'll be guidng
you through this Eva Orientation class. Now if you all step off the lift
onto the platform..."
The class stepped foward onto the platform, and there was a collective gasp
as the Evangelion turned to face them. It lifted an arm into the air,
giving the class a salute. "This is the type 3 Evangelion Combat Android.
This particular model is designed for Hand to Hand combat with the enemy."
As he spoke, the Evangelion turned to face its back to them. The entry plug
ejected, stopping just over the platform that the cadets stood on. They
watched as the Lieutenant Commander stepped out of the entry plug, and
dropped nimbly to the deck.
"All right recruits, time to get started. First we're going to review the
parts of the Evangelion, as well as its weapon systems..."
Ryan simply stared in shock as he looked at the man who was teaching the
class. It couldn't be...
"Big Brother?"

The End is the Beginning.
Chapter 2
An EDF Production.
Written by Helix and Rune.
aka Travis Carr and Jonathan Lloyd.
"The source of the LCL is still a mystery even to this day. It is apparent
that Nerv took the secrets of the liquid with it to its death, but it is
known that under each EDF compound, a lake of LCL forms. Whether or not
this is a property of the Evangelions or not has not been determined..."
Dr. Wright, "Evangelions, an Essay."
Ryan stared in shock at the man who was currently standing in the front of
all the recruits, teaching the Evangelion Orientation course. Blinking a
few times to clear his head, Ryan looked around at his fellow students, all
of whom were paying either rapt attention to the Lieutenant Commander, or
were taking notes. Except for Rei, of course, who was watching Samuel with
a combination of desire and adoration on her face.
Ryan shook himself, still a little shocked from seeing his older brother
present, and turned his attention back to the lesson. Sam was not going
anywhere, if nothing else, he was more closely bound to the EDF than Ryan
himself was.
The class continued, and Samuel Johnson continued through the long process
of identifying the Evangelion parts that until now had been only words in
the cadet's minds. Ryan stood there with rest of the cadets, absorbing
words like entry plugs, Prog-Knife Sheathes, Emergency Eject systems and the
like. Finally, when one too many students had fallen asleep on their feet,
or leaning against the rail in some cases, Sam stopped lecturing.
"Alright, that concludes the Evangelion Reference Section for today. Next
we're going to examine some pilot gear," he reached over and stabbed a
button on the platform, which lurched into motion, moving across the lake
towards a nearby pillar. "There will be a variety of gear that you will
use, both within your Eva and without. Your standard issue of equipment
will include your plug suit, an a survival/repair kit. Your plug suit helps
you to interface with your Eva, while the kit is if you are brought down
away from the assistance of a base or your support crews." The platform
came to a rest within the pillar, settling down gently. Sam gestured the
cadets to walk towards a nearby double doorway.
Finally the class had managed to shuffle, with some grunting and groaning,
into the locker room. Sam shouted that everyone should find a stall, and
get into one of the plug suits located there. There was once again a groan,
and then the room emptied as everyone found an appropriate locker/changing
room, and stepped in. It just had to be Ryan's luck that Rei Ikari had
chosen the stall next to him.
"This class is so BORING." Rei complained in her stall. "I swear, if it
wasn't for that dream who's teaching it, I don't know how I could stand it."
Ryan heard a sigh, then a click and whooshing sound as Rei compressed her
plug suit. "Oh well... its not like I haven't heard most of this from
mother half a million times."
Ryan grunted as he pulled on his plug suit. "Why do these things have to
be so darn heavy?" he grunted as he worked his leg past the knee joint. "I
thought that these suits were supposed to be COMFORTABLE, since we'd be
stuck in them so much."
"Well, what do you expect? These ARE combat plug suits, not the old
fashion skin tight kind." Rei stated. Ryan looked up to see her leaning
over the partition between the stalls. He gave a short yelp and pulled his
plug suit on even faster.
"Just what in the devil are you doing?" he shouted, finally working his
suit around his shoulders. "Haven't you ever heard anything about
privacy???"
Rei twirled a lock of hair around her finger, with a slightly bored
expression on her face. "What, its not like you have anything to hide is
there? What, are you embarrassed or something?" In fact Ryan's face was
blazing red by this point, and he finally snapped his plug suit on. With a
hiss of air, it conformed to his body.
"No, its just that I don't exactly feel comfortable with girls looking in
on me when I'm dressing." Especially a cute girl, Ryan thought as he walked
out of his stall. Rei walked out beside him, still twirling a lock of her
hair. "You can understand that, can't you?"
"I suppose..." Rei admitted. "But its not like it's 25 years ago again.
I mean, they even desegregated the dorms, so why not the locker rooms?"
"Probably because the dorms have enough bathrooms for people to change in
peace..." Ryan started as Sam called for attention again. Sighing, he
walked away towards the from of the classroom to hear what the Lt. Commander
had to say.
"Alright, your probably wondering why these are different from the standard
issue plug suits that you've probably seen pilots wearing. These are Mark 2
suits, different from the Mark 3 suits that the pilots wear. The Mark 2
suits utilize armor plates within the suit to protect your directly from
harm. The reason that we can't issue Mark 3 suits to you is that they
require you to have at least a 20% sync ratio, due to the bio-organic
components inside the suits... Walking can be hard enough, let alone
fighting in one, so for now you'll stick to the Mark 2s." Sam talked on for
another five minutes on the differences between the original Mark 1 suits
worn by the original Evangelion pilots, and Mark 2 and 3 suits. Ryan
listened for about half the time before he got bored with the lesson and
started to look around at his fellow cadets, a prospect that he had been
setting off for too long. Rei apparently had a small group of friends that
she was talking softly with, occasional fingers pointed at other cadets, or
more often, the teacher. A good portion of the cadets were listening to
Sam, but then there was the other half. People either adroitly examining
the equipment around them, staring off into space, or talking quietly
amongst themselves. The boy that Ryan had talked to earlier turned towards
him just as Ryan looked in his direction, and smiled slightly before turning
back to the lesson. Ryan shook his head, about to turn back and listen to
Sam when an ear splitting cry rent the air.
"PAPA!!! HI PAPA!!!" Rei shouted, jumping into the air and waving her
hands at the man just arriving from the platform. He wore a combination of
flight suit and formal uniform, common to all high ranking EDF officers.
But what drew Ryan's eyes was the confidence in his step, and the air of
assurance that seemed to radiate from him. An air that had inspired almost
an entire world to unite behind this man in the war that was threatening
their very existence...
"Supreme Commander on DECK! ATTENTION!" Sam shouted, and to their credit,
the cadets all snapped to attention. Including Ryan, who currently on the
front row watch the man walk over to Samuel.
"At ease. Hello Sam." the man extended his hand to Samuel, who clasped it
warmly. "Are these our new recruits?"
"Yes they are, Commander Ikari. And this lot looks promising, too." Sam
turned to the cadets. "At ease, Cadets." He turned back to Commander
Ikari. "I take it that this is an informal visit?"
"Yes, I wanted to see how this new batch was doing. Obviously very well...
I may have to stick you as the permanent teacher in a few years." The
commander grinned broadly, glancing at Sam to see his reaction.
"Um, yes sir... of course you would, but surely there isn't someone who
could do this better...?" Sam was a little flushed at this comment. After
all, he didn't want to spend his entire post combat career teaching
CADETS...
"No, I think that Mishui will fit that post better. Don't worry Sam, I
won't stick you with a desk job that quickly. But what ARE you doing
teaching this class? I thought that Mizuhara was scheduled today."
"Well sir, have you ever bet one a sure thing?"
"I see. So where are you going next?"
Sam grinned. "Next on our schedule is to introduce the cadets to the
miracle of link connection liquid. Although I never quite understood that
particular method of introduction..."
"Apparently some people suffer severe bouts of mania when they are
introduced to it in a entry plug due to claustrophobia. This seems to work
better..." he shrugged. "They tell me it works better. Although it wasn't
how I had my first experience with it though... Any ways, carry on." He
saluted to Sam, who returned the salute, before watching the commander walk
off. When Ikari had reboarded the lift, Sam let out a slow sigh.
Ryan turned to one of the other students. "Who was that?"
The student looked at him in surprise. "You mean you don't know? Thats
Supreme Commander Shinji Ikari, the Third Candidate. The fact that he
checked in on us is a great honor..." there was a squeak from Rei. "Or it
could be the fact that his daughter is here, also. My names Keith. What's
yours?" Keith extended his hand to Ryan.
Ryan clasped it warmly. "Ryan Fusha. Nice to meet you Keith. So...
what's this Link Connection Liquid they were talking about?"
"Apparently its some sort of oxygenated liquid used by the pilots of the
Evas." Keith shook his head. "I'm not exactly sure what it is, but
apparently there's a small lake of this stuff beneath every base. They must
use a lot of it to run all the Evas."
Ryan considered that. "Interesting..." he was about to add something to
his statement when Sam called them back to order.
"All right everyone, listen up. I want you to move to the platform outside
this room, and then we'll move to the final portion of todays lesson."
Again there was a movement of people, and finally everyone managed to cram
themselves back onto the platform. Ryan jumped slightly as a steel cage
snapped around them like a steel trap, but Sam was apparently unworried.
Finally the lift gave a shudder and began descent down a long, dark shaft.
The trip lasted several minutes, and Ryan reflected on what Keith had said
about the LCL. A lake of it beneath each of the bases? Then it was likely
that they were descending to that lake, for some reason or another.
Sam finally turned to the cadets and started speaking. "Alright, your
familiarization with the LCL process will be commenced soon. When we get to
the beginning of the familiarization, everyone should force all the air out
of their lungs."
Ryan was wondering what was going on when the lift shuddered, apparently
striking something below. Then,a yellowish liquid began to seep through the
slatted floor, slowly filling the shaft that they were traveling down. Ryan
stepped back a bit, looking at his brother for askance for what to do...

bit and Ryan meeting his brother. Thanks for looking!
