Maze apparently started as a radio show and a series of novels, which you're
supposed to have read. A _lot_ of anime is like that: it seems unexplained
because it's written under the assumption you've seen the series in other
forms, which only Japanese fans have.

genes and a cotton button down shirt, where as every one else has
stereotypical Fantasy gear.

That's because Maze isn't from that planet. She's from a version of Earth.

Nothing has enraged me more than gratuitous lesbians. If it wasn't for the
gratuitous cross-dressing, I would have ceased watching El-Hazard after
the first episode.

Gratuitous crossdressing has its own set of problems similar to gratuitous
lesbians. The reason that putting a man in a woman's role is funny is that
the status of women is lower than the status of men--especially in Japan, which
is years behind the times in women's rights. Showing crossdressing for humor
purposes trivializes the very real oppression of women.

Don't they exist? And what about homosexual males? Where are they?

You obviously haven't seen much shojo stuff. :-) They're there. Shonen ai is
a whole genre.

They also fail to show the harsh realities. Where are the couples living
with AIDS?

Lesbians? Getting AIDS? Umm, not very likely, unless they got it from dirty
needles. I suppose you could say it's wrong to have lots of shonen ai stories
without showing AIDS.

Were are the women who are denied jobs or promotions because of
their sexuality?

Same place as the women who are denied jobs or promotions just because they
are female. Anime doesn't show much of that, either.

Where are the lesbians who are harrased by mobs of angry
Baptists?

Baptists? In Japan? Umm, not very likely.
