Taking this to the logical extreme... NOTHING would ever be written. Ever.

Since no one was familier with it, George Lucas wouldn't have given us Star
Wars. Rumiko Takahashi would never have tried out UY or Ranma. Shakespear
wouldn't have even written Romeo and Juliet.

People have to try new things, occasionally. Ranma may be the most popular
topic for fanfics now, but a few years down the line, that may not be true at
all.

And, with the new TV series coming out, Lodoss War may be in the same
position.

I didn't get a chance to read the fic in question (tho I'd like to) but kudos
to Hunter Kid for trying something new.
