But why write a Lodoss fanfic?

Stick to Ranma fanfics, Hunter Kid.  You'll notice that you got not
C&C (or very little, if you got some privately) for this fic.  You
know why?  Because it was Lodoss, a little-known series.

 you seem to have forgotten the purpose of FANfiction.  they're stories
for fans _BY_ fans.  It doesn't matter that there's a small audience for
Lodoss fanfiction, it doesn't matter that it's a little known series.  He
wrote a fic, a good one by your own admision, for a series that he likes.
Beyond that, who cares--and if it gets people interested in Lodoss, so
much the better.  Where would Evangelion Fanfiction be if Andrew Huang
hadn't written Evanjellydoughnut?  There're weren't very many Evangelion
fics out there before, Evanjellydoughnut came out, but afterwards it
became pretty popular.  And what was the last Slayers fic you saw,
probably Onna-Red Side by Lurker, Rayearth is an extremely well known
series, but it doesn't have too much fanfiction.  Who knows maybe Hunter
Kid will have started a new rush of Lodoss fics.

oh and FYI, Record of Lodoss War isn't that obscure an anime series, it's
just a bit older than a few of the other ones out there.
