No, the ending had Ranma finally confess his love to Akane only to
discover that she'd been in love with Ryouga for a long time now.  A
heartbroken Ranma then challenged Ryouga to a fight over her and they
ended up destroying the Tendo Dojo in a do-or-die battle and nearly
killed each other when Akane begged Ranma to stop, tears in her eyes and
said she could never love him.  

Ranma runs away, too hurt and stunned to do much else.  Then a month
passes and Ranma hasn't been seen since that day.  Akane and Ryouga are
now engaged to be married, the dojo is mostly rebuilt and Ranma's
fiancees are sad since they don't know where Ranma went.  Then one day,
a letter arrives at the dojo from Ranma.  It wishes Akane and Ryouga a
happy life and that he's sorry for the damage he caused in the fight
before.  It ends with Ranma saying he's begun a new life in another
town.    
         
Then we cut to Ranma in another school, Ranma is dressed in a school
uniform and looks bored as he stares out the window while sitting in
class.  Then someone taps him on the shoulder and he glances back to see 
Lum give him a knowing smile.  Ranma simply smiles back and nods 
briefly while glancing to his left to make sure Ataru was still sleeping
at his desk, blissfully unaware....

Well, actually, the above is a total lie.  But it *could* still happen
that way.  They've made OVA's and nothing's been written in stone,
right?  ;)

Actually, the ending of Ranma 1/2 was simular to the manga ending. 
Ranma basically discovered his mother's existance in the final anime
episode and wanted to tell her the truth about his curse only to be
convinced by Genma that he would have to commit seppeku if he did.  In
the end, Ranma briefly appeared before his mother as a boy but convinced
her that it was a dream so he could have time to find a cure to his
curse.  Then he and Akane ran off for school together the next day. 
That was basically it as far as I can remember.
