Mina-san, Ohayou!
This is a side story for my Series _Ranko 1/2_. It takes place
between Volumes 3 and 4 (which is the reason why I posted Volume 3
today).

Ranko 1/2 (_____)
Side Story
"Be my Valentine"
It is early morning over Nerima, Tokyo, and the air is filled with
the song of birds sitting in the trees, waiting to catch the early
worm. Through the half-opened door of Ranko's room, the sounds
and light of the young morning stream in, making for a peaceful
awakening. Ranko stretches languorously on her futon, before she
jumps to her feet and opens the door fully. The glass doors of
the walkway are already opened into the garden, and Ranko takes a
deep breath of the fresh air - as fresh as air gets in a city like
Tokyo.
She turns back towards her room, but the place where the second
futon used to be is empty now. She sighs and walks back in.
~*~
Kasumi carries a full tray down the hall from the kitchen to the
living room. As she steps into the opened part of the walkway,
she sees Ranko in the garden, doing some simple punching exercises
with a cushioned wooden pole.
Kasumi: Good morning, Ranko! Breakfast will be ready, soon.
Ranko: Hey, Kasumi! Wait, I'll help you set the table.
She skips across the garden, jumping over the koi pond.
Kasumi: Thanks, Ranko. I appreciate the help. Usually at this
time, you are still occupied.
Ranko shoots a glance back out into the garden and cuts short a
sigh. Kasumi sets the tray down on the table and begins laying
out the dishes. Ranko joins her.
Kasumi: You miss your father, don't you?
Ranko: Yeah, kinda. That piece of wood does a good job of
replacing him for my morning workout - it's got slightly faster
reactions, without being quite as sneaky - but still...
When she looks back to Kasumi, she is met by a smile so full of
friendly understanding, she cannot help but smile back. They set
the rest of the table in silence.
~*~
Soon the family is gathered around the table, enjoying the first
meal of the day. Akane, Ranko and Nabiki finish quickly, since
they have to go to school; the nominal and the actual head of the
family take their time, watching the younger girls stand up and
leave to get ready for school.
When Ranko comes back into the living room, Souun has gone
already, and Kasumi is clearing the table. Ranko silently joins
the Kasumi in her work. When Kasumi walks off with the laden
tray, Ranko stretches.
Ranko: Hmmmmmmm! Ah, all right. I still gotta change before
we're off to school.
No sooner than she says this, Nabiki appears in the doorway.
Nabiki: Finally. I already thought you'd never get around to it.
Ranko: [turns] Nabiki?
Nabiki is carrying a glass of water in her hand. She saunters
over to Ranko with a strange look on her face.
Nabiki: C'mere. [seductively] Oooh, let me make you a man...
She leans into Ranko, just as she pours the water, and feels the
other girl's body shifting and changing into its male form next to
hers. Ranma eyes her nervously.
Ranma: [sweatdrops] Nabiki...
Nabiki takes a step back and looks to the ground. She seems
rather reluctant about something, clasping her hands nervously.
Nabiki: Ranma, I'm not sure whether I should say this, but... I
love... [gulps] I love making you nervous and confused.
It takes a moment for a look of realization to dawn on Ranma's
face as he catches on. Time enough for the grinning Nabiki to get
a headstart down the hall towards the stairs.
Ranma: Nabiki!!
Nabiki: [over her shoulder] You can't hit me; I'll foreclose on
your loans!
Ranma: [close behind her] Is strangling okay?
Nabiki: Sorry, no can do. Blue doesn't go with this outfit.
Besides I'm the sister of your fiance - a future relative.
Akane: We're not fiances!
Nabiki: Gaaah!
Nabiki narrowly avoids crashing into Akane who has suddenly
appeared from around the corner of the hall; she is wielding her
mallet threateningly.
Ranma: You can't hit her! She'll foreclose on all my loans.
~*~
Ranma: I just can't believe it.
Ranma and Akane are walking their usual way to school, with Ranma
on the ground next to Akane for a change.
Akane: I can. It's absolutely typical for her.
Ranma: Yeah, well, now that she *did* it, it certainly fits her
pattern, I can see that - but at that moment it came so
unexpected. How does she get an idea like that in the first
place?
Akane: Well, it's Valentine's Day. With loving couples and all
that stuff.
Ranma: [blinking] What, you mean she wakes up, looks at the
calendar and goes "Oh, look, it's Valentine's Day. I think I'll
freak out Ranko by pretending to be attracted to her"? Boy, that
girl is such a... such a...
Akane: Pervert?
Ranko: A tease.
Akane: *And* a pervert.
<A-chooo!>
>From around the corner the sound of a sneeze can be heard. When
Ranma and Akane round the corner, they find Nabiki, who is just
accepting a handkerchief from Kunou Tatewaki.
Akane: [stops] Nabiki.
Nabiki: [turns] Oh, hi, Akane. Fancy meeting you here. Isn't
it a nice morning? But don't let me keep you with my idle
chit-chat. By all means, be on your way.
When Akane shows no movement, Nabiki makes shooing motions with
her arms, as if flapping at an animal.
Nabiki: Get along. Don't you have classes to attend?
Akane: So have you.
Meanwhile Ranma has jumped onto Kunou's head and looks down at
him, upside down.
Ranma: Yo, Kunou. What's up?
Kunou snarls and slashes at him with his bokken. Ranma
disdainfully evades the strike and touches down on the pavement
again.
Kunou: Begone, cur! I was merely conducting business with Tendou
Nabiki, when you so rudely interrupted. I was just about to buy -
Ouch!
Nabiki: Oh my, Kunou-chan, I seem to have trodden on your foot.
I'm so sorry.
Kunou: You are forgiven. But let us now complete our
transaction, for I am am anxious to see your newest set of - Ouch!
Nabiki: Tsk tsk tsk, I am *so* clumsy today. Or are your feet
getting bigger, Kunou-chan? Sorry 'bout the heels. Perhaps we
should meet again later and finish this deal somewhere that's
*not so crowded*.
Kunou: [hopping on one leg] If you so wish, Tendou Nabiki.
Though this can hardly be called crowded - there is but you and I,
that wretch called Saotome and...
He stops hopping, as if remembering something suddenly.
Akane: Uh, oh!
Kunou: Akane! My love, I almost forgot! And this on the day of
love and affection - no this will not do at all.
He pulls a bunch of roses from out of nowhere and falls to one
knee before Akane.
Kunou: Dear Akane... [with horrible accent] "bi mai barentain"
Akane: Uh... what?
Nabiki: I *think* what Kunou-chan meant to say is "Be my
Valentine" - it's English for-
Akane: I know that!
Kunou: Then will you accept...?
Akane: No!!
Ranma: [thinks] Thank god that I'm male right now. That way he
only wants to hit me - not hit *on* me.
<Splatter>
A stream of steaming water hits Ranma from above, turning him back
instantly. Already knowing what she will see, Ranko looks up,
where a little red-haired girl with a kettle sits on a balcony and
giggles.
Ranko: You're enjoying this, aren't you?
The little girl giggles again.
Kunou: Pigtail Girl!
Ranko: Oh damn.
~*~
Akane, Ranko and Nabiki enter the schoolyard together. Ranko is
rubbing and occasionally blowing on her right hand, which seems a
little swollen.
Nabiki: Well, okay then. See you later, Sis, Ranko.
She separates from the other two and makes her way towards her
classmates, some of whom are grouped in one corner of the yard.
Akane: Later, Nabiki.
When Akane turns back, Ranko speaks up.
Ranko: Um, I'll go change before class, now. I'll use the water
fountain out back, so's nobody sees me. See you in class then,
OK?
Akane: [smiles back] All right. Be quick.
Ranko separates from her and jogs towards the corner of the
building, en route to the back of the school ground, where some of
the sports fields and the woods are located. She passes a vaguely
Kunou-shaped impact crater in the ground that indicates that the
upperclassman made it to school some time earlier.
Behind the school building she walks along the edge of the small
patch of forest, towards the water fountain, when she hears a
muted muttering come from the underbrush between the trees.
Voice: Gotta be here. *Gotta* be here somewhere.
Puzzled, Ranko turns towards the voice and peers into the bushes.
She blinks in surprise when she sees the bandanna'd countenance of
Ryouga, who is fighting his way through the bushes in a grimly
determined way. He is moving exactly parallel to the forest edge.
Ranko: Yo! Ryouga!
Ryouga: [spins around] Ranko?! What are you doing out here in
this untamed wilderness?
Ranko: Uh, going to school, actually. It can be rough sometimes,
but I wouldn't call it an untamed wilderness.
She grabs Ryouga and pulls him the few meters unto the back yard
of Fuurinkan. Ryouga looks around, blinking in astonishment.
Ryouga: I was lost for so long... I thought I might never see
civilization again.
Ranko: Ryouga. This piece of woodland is barely half a mile
squared, with houses on three sides and the school grounds on the
fourth.
Ryouga: [irritably] Well? Woods can be treacherous, leading you
to walk in circles and stuff.
Ranko: [mutters] Not as if you need a lot of leading anyway.
[out loud] So what's that thing you're lugging around?
Ryouga blushes embarrassedly and looks about to launch into a
"Thing? What thing? Oh, *that* thing; it's nothing, really"
routine, but Ranko gives him a stern glance.
Ryouga: Uh, it's- it's a present for Akane.
Ranko: [grinning] Why, Ryouga! You *do* care for her. So
when do you plan on giving it to her, huh?
Ryouga: [nervously] I don't know. I'm not so sure how to
present it to her...
Ranko: Jeez, Ryouga, what's so difficult? You walks up to her
and sez "Yo Akane, my Love! This here present is a token of my
affection for you. Please marry me and bear my children."
Ryouga: [gasps, blushes] I couldn't say that!
Ranko: [thoughtfully] Nah, you're right. You're not the type of
man for whom it'd work, anyway. You'd have to be more like
Nabiki. But anyway. You'll have to scrape together the courage
to give it to her eventually before it goes bad or something.
She eyes the large package on Ryouga's backpack.
Ranko: On the other hand, knowing you, if it hasn't gone bad by
now, it's probably something that can't spoil at all.
Ryouga is only listening with half an ear.
Ryouga: [anguished] I just don't know what to say to her.
Ranko: So write her a letter, dolt!
Ryouga: But I don't know what to write, either!
Ranko: Geez, what's your problem, Ryouga? Just write about the
things you love about her. What a nice person she is; how she
cares about other people and is kind to stupid animals.
Ryouga: [uncertainly] So I should write that...?
Ranko: Yeah, and lots more. [grows unfocussed] Tell her how
beautiful she is. How you can drown yourself in her deep brown
eyes; how her whole face lights up when she smiles; how wonderful
she looks when the sunlight is playing on her hair. That the
sound of her voice makes your heart soar, when you hear her call
out, and makes it beat loudly in time with her approaching footsteps.
Ryouga: [scribbling furiously] Uh-huh... anything else.
Ranko clasps a hand over her eyes and shakes her head.
Ranko: Oh man, I guess I'd better grow a large nose, so I fit
into this scenario.
Ryouga: Huh, what are you talking about? What's Pinocchio got to
do with this?
The school bell rings for the first time, calling all students to
their classes. Ranko grabs Ryouga and drags him over to the water
fountain.
Ranko: Look, Ryouga, just you wait out here in the yard, and I'll
write up something fitting for you. I'll slip out here and give
it to you during break, and you can give it to Akane when we get
home. I'll lead you there during lunch hour.
Ryouga looks at her gratefully, but keeps a cautious distance,
while she splashes herself with water from the fountain.
Ryouga: You'd do that for me?
Ranma: [shaking water out of his hair] Sure. A girl of Akane's
age could really do with a nice boyfriend, especially after what
she's been through, guys-wise. [pauses] Plus Kunou doesn't have
a chance against you. [thinks] If he could find you, that is.
~*~
Ranma quickly slips into the classroom under the disapproving eyes
of the teacher, with bare seconds to spare before the second bell
announces the beginning of classes. He takes place at his desk
next to Akane's
Akane: [whispers] What kept you?
Ranma: [whispers back] Met someone out back and couldn't change
right away.
Akane nods, and both turn their attention to the teacher. After a
while, Ranma takes one sheet of paper and begins composing the
letter for Ryouga, while the lesson drones on around him.
Teacher: Ano jitsu wa dare ga?
Student: Kore wa BEITOMEN no itansha.
Ranma: [thinks] Hmmm, would she go for a poem? Nah, Ryouga's
not the type for that. Besides it might remind her of Kunou.
~*~
After class, most students use the five-minute break to walk
around a bit and talk, before the next class begins. Akane's
friend Yuka, a short haired girl with a small, fluffy ponytail,
walks to the front of the class to talk with Sayuri. When she
squeezes past Ranma's desk, she acidentally brushes against his
somewhat disorderly stack of paper and causes it to fall down.
Quickly she bends down and picks up everything, but when she plops
the papers back onto Ranma's desk, something catches her eye.
She looks around surreptitiously, but Ranma is not to be seen in
the classroom, so she pulls one sheet out of the stack and begins
reading. After a while she sniffles and blinks rapidly, wiping at
the corners of her eyes. When she is done she hurriedly places
the paper back into the stack and pats it. Then she dashes to the
desk of her friend.
Yuka: Sayuri! You'll *never* guess what I just found...
~*~
During the next class, Ranma puts the finishing touches to the
letter, occasionally paying attention to the teacher. Finally the
bell rings, marking the begin of the fifteen-minute recess. Ranma
quickly leaves with the completed letter, while back in the
classroom a grinning Yuka and Sayuri make small talk with Akane.
Yuka: So, Akane, how are you getting along with Your fiance
these days?
Akane: [groans] Next question please.
Sayuri: Huh! You always say that. What's wrong with Ranma?
Akane: Nothing's wrong with Ranma [thinks] Nothing I could tell
you about, anyway. [out loud] But you weren't talking about
*Ranma* - you were talking about my "fiance". And we're *not*
fiances, so there's nothing to talk about.
Yuka: [smugly] You might change your mind about that, Akane.
You might just change your mind.
Akane: What's that supposed to mean, now?
Sayuri giggles.
Yuka: [mysteriously] You'll see.
Akane: Fine! I can't wait. [thinks] In your dreams.
~*~
Outside, Ranma meets up with Ryouga behind the school building.
He hands the letter to the fanged boy, who holds it as if it was a
fragile piece of china.
Ranma: Here. This is what I've come up with. You'd better read
it well, since it's supposed to be from you.
Ryouga: [nods] U-huh.
Ranma: Oh, and if there's anything in it that you don't think
should be in there, you can rewrite the thing and edit it out.
Perhaps you should rewrite it anyway, so that it's in your own
handwriting.
Ryouga: U-huh.
Ranma: There's another two classes before Lunch hour. Then I'll
get you back to the Tendou's and you can wait there until we
return.
Ryouga: U-huh.
Ranma looks at Ryouga, who is still staring at the letter and
barely listening to him.
Ranma: Perhaps you should get yourself someone to write your
dialogue for you, too.
Ryouga: U-huh.
Ranma: [turns] Right. See ya later.
~*~
Back in class, Ranma takes his place next to Akane.
Ranma: Hey, Akane, I just met Ryouga on the school ground.
Akane: [smiles] Oh, that's nice. He's back?
Ranma: Yeah. I promised I'd take him to the Dojo during lunch
hour, so he can wait for us there.
Akane: Try not to get into a fight with him on the way.
Ranma: [grinning] Would I do such a thing?
Akane: [punches his shoulder playfully] Promise!
Ranma: [yelps; ducks, grinning] Help! Help, she's hitting me
again! I promise; I promise!
A good-natured scuffle breaks out between the two. Yuka catches
Sayuri's eye across the room, and the two nod knowingly at each
other.
~*~
Finally lunch hour arrives with a ring of the bell. Ranma gets up
and turns to Akane.
Ranma: Okay, I'll go get Ryouga to the Dojo. I'll make it quick,
all right? [smiles]
Akane: [smiles back] See you when you come back.
As soon as Ranma leaves the room, Yuka and Sayuri pop up besides
Akane.
Yuka: Does that mean you are free for lunch?
Akane: Heh, looks like it, doesn't it? Where shall we go?
Together the three friends get out of the classroom and wander
down the hall.
Sayuri: I don't know. There's just too few good restaurants
around here; we could do with a few more.
Yuka: Dutch?
Sayuri: Mmmm, yeah.
Akane: Fine by me.
They leave the school building and cross the yard.
Yuka: [innocently] So, where do you go eating with Ranma.
Akane: I don't. It only leads to trouble, so we stopped going
out to eat. Besides, our fathers always try to turn such
occasions into "romantic dates".
Sayuri: So what? I like romantic dates.
Akane: [darkly] Not this kind.
Yuka: You mean the kind that might further your relationship with
Ranma?
Akane: What relationship?
Yuka stops and holds Akane's shoulder with one hand.
Yuka: No, come on, Akane, what the hell is wrong with you? Ranma
is the #1 hunk of our school - heck, of the *district*. All the
girls are green with envy because he's engaged to you already.
Sayuri: Yeah. *I* should be so lucky.
Akane: Now listen-
Yuka: [interrupts] But you keep treating this engagement as an
unwelcome obligation. You know how that looks? Half of the girls
think you're just flaunting it, saying "Look at me; I caught Ranma
and I don't care a bit".
Akane: [stunned] Really?
Sayuri: Of course the other half thinks that you'd rather date
Yuri.
Akane can't help but chuckle at this. Yuka remains serious.
Yuka: I just don't understand you, Akane. You and Ranma seem to
get along fine - what would it hurt you to go along with the
engagement? Is it just because it's arranged? Come on, that
would be such a stupid reason. If you end up losing Ranma to
some other girl, just because you were to stubborn to accept an
arranged marriage, you'll hate yourself for it for the rest of
your life.
Akane: [sighs wearily] It's more than that. You wouldn't
understand, but we're... incompatible in certain ways. We get
along fine, but a marriage wouldn't work.
Yuka: Even if it's an arranged marriage, you can still do your
best to make it happy. As it happens, I know that Ranma likes you
very much.
Akane: [rolls her eyes] I'm sure he does.
Yuka: [smugly] In fact he is writing a love letter to you.
<Thunk!>
Akane's school bag drops to the floor.
Akane: He what?!
Yuka: You heard me.
Sayuri: You see? Even though you are always acting so opposed to
the engagement he likes you. You should do your share, too, if
you want this to work out.
Akane's arms are grabbed by her two friends. Yuka scoops up her
bag with the other hand.
Yuka: [dragging Akane along] We're going shopping now.
Akane: W-what?
Sayuri: Chocolate!
~*~
Lunch hour is two thirds over. In the classroom Ranma, back from
delivering Ryouga, is eating his lunch, but the goings-on around
him keep distracting him.
Girl: Umao-kun. [giggles shyly] Here!
With a great show of surprise the boy takes the offered box of
chocolates.
Umao: Why, Shikako-chan - for me?
Ranma: [head in hands; thinks] Oh geez! get a bit more
original, will ya?
All over the classroom, the very same scene takes place with
little to no variation.
Girl2: Take this.
Boy2: Oh, for me?
Girl3: Here, chocolates.
Boy 3: For- for me?
Ranma shakes his head and turns back to his lunch.
Voice: You what?! For me??!
Blinking, Ranma turns around.
Ranma: [thinks] That one sounded actually surprised.
His jaw drops, when he sees his classmate Yuri give a wrapped gift
to Daisuke of all people.
Ranma: [thinks] Yuri?! Giving Chocolate to Daisuke? All right,
who drugged her food? She'd never-
Yuri: Not for *you*, dolt! [drops her voice] But... could you
give this to your sister for me...?
Reassured, Ranma turns back, letting his breath out.
Ranma: [thinks] Man, that would have been weird. I guess some
things simply *can't* happen, even when everybody goes crazy like
today.
Voice: [from outside] No excuses. Go!
Akane stumbles into the classroom. She hisses something back out
of the doorway, then reluctantly turns towards Ranma. After a
moment's hesitation, she resolutely stomps up to his desk.
Noticing her, Ranma looks up.
Ranma: Oh, hey, Akane. There you are. I wondered where you
went.
But Akane has other things on her mind - she is just noticing that
almost all the people in the room look at them. Angrily she grabs
Ranma by the shirtfront.
Akane: Come with me.
She races out of the classroom, Ranma flying behind her like a
rather surprised pennant. When they reach the roof of the
building, Akane stops and sets him down.
Ranma: Geez, Akane, what's the matter that you drag me off to
this place.
Akane: Well, in the classroom in front of all those people, I
couldn't possibly-
Boy's Voice: What, for me?
A girl giggles.
Ranma and Akane look around. There are about half a dozen pairs
up on the roof, blushing and going through the same motions as the
boys and girls down in the classroom.
Boy: Chocolates for me?
Girl: [nods] U-huh!
Akane: Aiiiieegh!
She grabs Ranma again and jumps off the roof.
~*~
Ranma: Better be careful, these woods can be treacherous.
Akane: What are you talking about?
In the woods behind Fuurinkan, a flushed Akane turns to face
Ranma.
Ranma: Nothing. So what's so important that you drag me up to
the roof and then down here for it?
Akane: Uh, you see... It's...
There's a rustling in the bushes, and the eager faces of Yuka and
Sayuri can be seen peeking through the leaves.
Akane: Oh god, this is so embarrassing.
She thrusts the package at Ranma, eyes averted.
Akane: [blushing] Here, take this.
Ranma: Huh? [looks at it] Err, Valentine chocolates? You
bought Valentine chocolates for me?
Akane: [whispers] I was kinda bullied into it. Act happy,
they're still watching.
Ranma: [whispers back] Akane, this is weird.
Akane: [blushies fiercely; fidgets] Tell me all about it. Now
just take one and act suitably in love. I want to get this over
with.
Ranma very slowly takes one of the little chocolate hearts out of
the box and pops it into his mouth, looking at Akane strangely.
Akane: Oh, while we are talking about "weird" - Yuka claimed you
were writing a love letter to me.
Ranma almost chokes on the chocolate.
Ranma: <cough, cough, splutter> She- she did?
Akane's eyes go wide, then she covers her eyes with one hand,
bowing her head, and takes a deep breath.
Akane: I can't *wait* to hear this one.
Ranma: [turning red] I- I can explain.
Akane: You're calling *me* weird for buying Valentine chocolates,
while *you*-
Ranma: [wails] It's not like that!
~*~
Ryouga: ...not like that. I just can't do it!
Ryouga is rapidly pacing to and fro in the garden of the Tendou
Home. He is talking to himself under his breath, clutching the
letter to Akane in his hand.
Ryouga: Arrgh! I'm just too weak. I'm not worthy of Akane, if I
don't even dare to give her a simple letter.
He stops pacing and looks towards the house, where Kasumi has set
a little tray with a cup of tea and some bisquits on the open
walkway for him. The tea is already cold. It's late in the
afternoon and Akane will return home very soon.
Ryouga: I'll... I'll just sit down in the living room and wait.
And when they come home, I'll give her this letter and everything
will be fine.
He resolutely walks towards the house once again. But before he
even reaches the steps, he stops anew, shaking with tension and
anxiety.
Ryouga: No! No, I can't! [walks away again] But I must! How
am I ever going to confess to Akane if I'm not strong enough for
this.
He decisively turns and stomps back towards the house.
<Ka-plish!>
<Bweeeeeee>
At that very moment the front door opens and Akane's voice can be
heard through the hall.
Akane: We're ho-o-ome!
Soon Ranma and Akane emerge from the depths of the house and enter
the living room. They set down their school bags and Ranma puts
the chocolates onto the table. Then he notices the untouched tray
and looks around.
Ranma: [thinks] Aw, man! Don't tell me he got lost again.
Akane: P-chan! You made it back.
Ranma turns when he hears this and sees Akane out in the garden,
approaching the dripping wet pig.
Ranma: Of course. Leave it to the pig to play in the mud.
Akane: [chastizing] He's not muddy, Ranma. He just fell into
the pool again. Oh, look, he's carrying a letter.
The pig shoves the soggy envelope towards her.
Akane: For me?
She takes up the Letter and opens it. P-chan looks on anxiously,
but when her eyes come to rest on the opened Letter, the strain is
to much for him and he runs off squealing, not able to watch her
reaction.
Ranma: There he goes. [mutters] Coward.
Akane: Oh, What a pity - the ink has run and it's all illegible.
Ranma slumps to the ground besides the table, resting on his back.
Nabiki comes in, leans across him and picks one chocolate heart
out of the box.
Nabiki: Hmmm, nice chocolates, Ranma.
Ranma: [tiredly] Yeah. Akane bought them.
Nabiki: [raises a brow] So, she finally coming around, then?
Ranma & Akane: Go away, Nabiki!
The End
