Promises and Vows
By Myrriden
AKA Shane McCoy
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Promises. Broken or kept, they keep our hearts in balance with
what truly is. Men make promises not to break them, but to show honor
unto their families. To increase the family's. . .prestige.

Natsume Kyusaku stared at the old letter which had once been a
large driving force in his effort to maintain a career with his wife at
Mishima Industries. It had largely been a part about honor.
Nuku Nuku, his daughter and the person he loved perhaps most on
the earth, had found the ancient letter inside an old dictionary from
Kyu's college days. He hadn't even realized he had packed the letter in
his haste to leave the mansion that one day. He had never bothered to
look inside the old text, because he had enough dictionary's on his
computer. The only reason he had for taking it was sentimental value, as
it was one of the only things left of his father's possesions.
Nuku Nuku had been looking through the dictionary, an event she
found mildly entertaining, when she ame uopon the hastily written letter.
Puzzling over the words, she took it to Papa-san to figure it out.
A promise had been made on the letter.
A promise he had yet to enact or carry out.
Oh, he had the full abilitiy to fulfill the promise. But how
could he force Nuku Nuku into a situation like that? She seemed well
enough, but she was little more then a child in reality. A promise he
knew he couldn't possibly fulfill now.
A promise that even his bride to be, Akiko had known about, and
had signed fully and willingly, knowing what it could possibly do to a
future child. He had been an idiot then. He was still an idiot now.
God...Nuku Nuku.
How could a simple NK 1124 cyborg, made for little perfection, and
in the haste of the moment, evolve into a creature that he would have
willingly called his own flesh and blood? She loved him with what he
considered almost a pet's love and deotion, but with such a degree that
she knew and comprehended that she loved him. She knew she cared deeply
for him, and he for her.
That was something that no human could acheive, even on of his own
flesh and blood. Nuku Nuku loved with no inhibitions. She cared not who
you were, or what you did. She only cared about the self. Who you are,
not who you were.
Never had he found a trust so binding and complete, that he found
himself instincivly following her example.
	She was his daughter.
How could he possibly do this to her?
The answer was simple. He couldn't, not eve if it was a question
of honor. His daughter...his family was more important to him then an
ancient, stupid promise made in college to a boy he almost hated, but
still inately pitied and liked for the crafty geniousness.
Ryu frowned and released the paper. Slowly, gently it floated
down into the trash can. A nearly spent cigarette followed it a second
later as Ryunosuke left the room to tell his daughter what was not going
to happen.
Slowly, the cigarette cherry lit the paper on fire. Smoke drifted
lazily to the cieling as the fire clowly ate at the words which had once
been a solemn promise between two men.
I hereby swear that if I have a child, and you have a
child, both of opposite sexes, then we shall wed the two in
matrimony, so that our two families will be joined, and our lives as
friends will continue forever.
I, Natsume Ryunosuke, swear and agree to this vow.
I, Mishima Akiko, swear and agree to this vow.
I, Saotome Genma, swear and agree to this vow.

	So much for promises.
