PM Productions Presents
A Phillip Masters Fanfic
The See-Through Heart

How does one discern the difference between I and Self, when one
doesn't even understand individuality? How does one seperate the Soul
from the Heart, when one isn't even sure she has either?
I ask myself these questions everyday, every moment. I try to give
answers to queries which have befuddled man for eons. Faith is the
eternal reply man has created. It has made them weak. I have no faith,
I only have life and death, the two constants in the Universe.
Everything that lives must die, as well as everything that dies
will again live. It's not faith, it's Conservation of Energy. Life is
an energy, and must follow the same rules as all other forms. How do I
know this? Is it faith? No, I have been witness to the devistating
power of this energy. I have seen the fall of the Angel, and it does
not bring beginning, but end.
End of an era, end of an age. Why has man done this? Why did man
wish to bring his own downfall? To destroy all he has accomplished, to
remove his mark from the face of the Universe? Why did he wish to make
me?
What am I? A fixed set of amino acids, painstakingly manipulated
to form what I am now. Is that truly all I am? I search and search for
more, but if I do have a heart, it seems to be transparent. I could
just assume I have one, but I have no faith. Life dominates my
existence, and death my fate. Anything more is irrelevant. He thought
so too.
I look down to the spectacles in my hand. They were his. The man
who accomplished humankind's last great feat. The one who stepped up
and challanged their God, their faith. Whether he won, or succeeded at
all will never be known, and is unimportant. They are all gone now, a
large pool of goo is all that remains. What good is a large pool of
goo?
The lenses of the glasses are long gone, removed before my time.
However, the overall appearance of the frame is unchanged. They are
largely the same, yet completely unfunctional. Much like my heart, if I
have one. I have no faith, but am capable of speculation. It is a cold
art, speculation, requiring neither a heart nor soul. Thus, it proves
nothing, other than the fact that I am sentient.
Yet, even that must pass. My sentience is limited, by the failures
of the flesh. Lack of sufficient sustinence has rid me of the ability
to stand, and I fall. I can see the surface of the lake coming at me,
the only organic substance other than myself left on this derelict
planet. The Earth will go on, and from this lake will grow more life.
Nature, ultimately, could not be destroyed by man.
I sink into what was once humankind. The LCL fills my lungs,
causing a sharp pain to wrack my wiry form. My teeth grit
involuntarily, but otherwise I relish the feeling. It has been so long
since I have felt such stimulus, and it is almost overwhelming. Soon,
it passes as my lungs accept the new form of nourishment and my blood
begins to process the oxygen. It is an irony, that in the very stuff of
life I shall die.
     Yet, death is my fate.
And so my fate comes to pass.
