Not exactly on-topic, but thought it was a good step for anime's popularity
at least.

Hi everybody, this is a copy of a press release that is pretty recent
that Lisa Robertiello wrote (she is the person who answered my
questions). It also has the right address for DIC, sorry for the
mistake I made in my previous post.

DIC ENTERTAINMENT RENEWS "SAILOR MOON" IN CANADA ON GLOBAL TV AND Y-TV
THROUGH THE '98 SEASON, AS THE COMPANY EXPANDS WORLDWIDE TV AND
MERCHANDISING EFFORTS FOR THE POPULAR ANIMATED FRANCHISE
Network Seven in Australia Premieres The Popular Animated Series In Key
Kids
Time Slot
(BURBANK, CA August 6, 1996) DIC Entertainment, L.P. has renewed
SAILOR
MOON in Canada on Global TV and Y-TV through the 1998 television
season, it
was announced today by Andy Heyward, president and chief executive
officer,
DIC Entertainment.
Additionally, SAILOR MOON is airing in Australia on Seven Network,
which
premiered 65 half-hour episodes of the phenomenally popular animated
girls
series in May 1996 as part of the Agro's Cartoon Connection which airs
Monday through Friday between
6:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. SAILOR MOON is rating 40% higher than all
shows in
that cartoon block.
The series will premiere on TVNZ (New Zealand) in September 1996.
The new TV deals reflect an expansion of the SAILOR MOON franchise in
the
English-speaking world as DIC Entertainment expands the licensing and
merchandising campaign of the property.
"We are pleased with the ratings performance of SAILOR MOON in Canada
and we
are excited about the introduction of the series into another major
territory such as Australia," stated Heyward. "SAILOR MOON has
continued to
gain tremendous international popularity as broadcasters around the
world
have recognized the viability of a unique program such as this that
appeals
to the underserved girls audience."
In Canada, SAILOR MOON has premiered as the top-rated animated
children's
show, airing on Global TV, Monday through Friday at 8:30 a.m. and on
Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Global TV has renewed its broadcast agreement
for
another two runs of the existing 65 half-hour episodes. In addition,
the
cable channel Y-TV is also scheduling SAILOR MOON Monday through Friday
at
noon and 3:30pm. Y-TV has a deal through 1998 for the 65 episodes.
DIC Worldwide Merchandising division has expanded its licensing efforts
for
SAILOR MOON. More than 20 licensees that will introduce more than 150
SAILOR MOON products have been signed in Canada, including Irwin Toy as
the
master toy licensee, which reports that the SAILOR MOON doll is
consistently
on the best-selling list.
In Australia, DIC Worldwide Merchandising has signed Croner-Tyco as the
master toy licensee for SAILOR MOON. In addition to the master toy
license,
DIC is also planning to unveil an extensive line of other products in
Australia.
In the U.S. market, DIC Entertainment reported that disappointing
ratings
have led to the discontinuation of production of additional episodes of
SAILOR MOON. DIC Entertainment launched the show in September, 1995,
on
more than 87 television stations, representing over 84% of the country.
While SAILOR MOON will go on a production hiatus in the U.S., DIC
Entertainment will continue to explore other ways for the show to
return to
the air.
"While SAILOR MOON continues to enjoy tremendous worldwide success
across
Europe and Asia, the kid's syndication business in the U.S. is
extremely
competitive with very few choice time periods, and this ultimately
limited
the potential to build a large audience," said Heyward. "We're proud
of the
production and we felt that it was one of our best properties, because
SAILOR MOON met the needs of the underserved girls audience."
The "action hero" in SAILOR MOON is a 14-year old female who struggles
daily
to maintain peace among the myriad of evil doers threatening her world.
SAILOR MOON is based on a series of books from Kodansha and has been
an
unprecedented success in Japan, where the series has successfully been
airing on TV Asahi. In addition to Japan, SAILOR MOON has been a top
rated
program in Spain (Antena 3), France (TF-1), and Hong Kong (TVB), among
others. The series has broken ratings records.
