Well, since my other stories have not gone anywhere lately, and this
piece is flowing along acceptably well, I'll post it. Hopefully I'll even get
a bit of c&c, too. This should be an attempt at a "day in the life" setting
for two fairly well known characters. Apologies for this chapter's
setting may be needed, and if so, consider them given to those who want them.
Explanations are located in the footnotes at the end of the fic, so please
watch your steps when exiting the reading area...

"Compact and High Powered"
This is dedicated to anyone who has wondered:
How in Kami’s name can anything as small as a young child can manage
to squeeze so much out of itself (i.e.: So much Energy, Chaos, Kawaii-ness,
Noise, etc.)
Ch. 1 Unpleasant Mornings
If natural light could exist in this place, it would have shone on a
young redhead waking into her daughter's room. The light shining on this lady
was the next best thing, being perceptually identical, only lacking those few
wavelengths with pesky health side effects. The air, and the complete
environment around the living area for that matter, were being very carefully
monitored to help the child in this room grow up to her maximum potential,
while maintaining an appearance of perfect normalcy. All the monitoring in
the universe could not conceal one fact, however.
"Pheewww!! Did you wet your futon _again_ last night?" (A morning
scene all too familiar to many a parent.). Making a mental note to increase
the weekly percentage of bed-wetting incidents up to an unacceptable 33.56% in
the diary entries for her daughter's development, and hearing the expected
mumbled response, she asks again: "Well, what have you got to say for
yourself, Ryoko? And speak up, I couldn't hear you the first time."
The little girl in wet pajamas blushes quite uncomfortably, well aware
of the embarrassment involved in answering the question asked. After about a
minute, while the probability distribution of various likely answers and the
many repercussions of the possible parental responses have already been
calculated to three decimal places by her mother, the girl decides to answer.
"I... Bwahhh!!!" <starts bawling, even as she tries to explain
herself> "They are really big and scary, and I am so little and... I'm
sorry!! Bwahhh!!" She continues bawling for a little bit, until her mother
comes to calm her down. Having read very few coherent thoughts in her
daughter's mind, Washuu decides to change tactics. Gently grabbing her
daughter and pushing her in the direction of the bathroom, she starts talking.
"Come on, let's get you cleaned up, and then we will together go to
the Science Academy, OK?" Calming down, the little girl agrees, right before
heading into her bath. (This outing’ll distract her for a while, all right.
And speaking of distractions...) Washuu pulls out her ever present laptop
interface and begins making a few notes. (Let's see...
On the screen:
Experiment 1132-s: Social stress & mental reaction time.
...
...If I brought Ryoko to class, it would let her make a small
commotion for a while among my students, and if I then drop a "little" test
for them? Ryoko would get an opportunity to show me a little self-control,
and I would get a ton of data… I like this!) A rather wicked smile turns into
a series of giggles as the professor considers various possible scenarios to
inflict on her test sub ... err, I mean, Washuu enjoyably plans today's
curriculum for her students. (Looks like today will be a really fun day,
after all.)
Half an hour later, after getting Ryoko all cleaned up, and having a
small argument over a photograph, Washuu and her daughter step out of a
sub-space door and into the sprawling campus of the Science Academy.
to be continued...
--------------------------------------
I originally started this with the idea of writing a short little
spamfic about Ryoko and Washuu’s relationship, back when Ryoko was still
under pre-school age. The inspiration was a small 4 panel "Theater of life"
about Ryoko and Washuu, where a picture is shown of a young, embarrassed
looking Ryoko is standing next to a futon being hung to dry. As I was
writing, I started to wonder what it would have been like for a parent to have
a child with Ryoko's "abilities," and how Washuu would deal with her, and
realized that there is plenty of room for something longer. Anyway, any
feedback, corrections, and/or questions are welcome, so write to me and let
me know what you thought.
I should also thank "Tuxedo" will and Doug Helm for any inspiration
from their "Adventures of the Chibi-Scouts" series. (Hopefully I'm not merely
re-telling some of their story elements from within a Tenchi setting.)
