I've been thinking about this matter myself, recently.  Ranma fanfic authors
have almost universally adopted the "Viz standard" for Shampoo's speech, which
typically involves inability to use pronouns and to conjugate verbs correctly.

Chinese attempting to speak Japanese, while for the most part conforming to

is apparently "kawaii" to do so, but the practice does not seem to be
restricted to cute characters) and to refer to second-person addressees in the

Now, it seems to me that an analogous portrayal of Shampoo is possible, using
comedy stereotypes of Chinese/Asians attempting to speak English, e.g.,
mixing up R's and L's, referring to everyone as "honorable," saying "Ah so"
all the time.  The question then arises, would use of these stereotypes in fan
fiction be offensive?  Probably.  But why doesn't the "baby-talk" imposed on
Shampoo by Viz and fanfic authors offend?

Probably because there was almost no other way to do it. True, the
stereotypical Chinese speach would have offended many readers so Viz
chose the lesser of the two evils and gave Shampoo baby talk instead.
They did the same with Ranma and Ukyo. They gave Ranma a drawl in the
English dub to substitute his rough Japanese speach. Ukyo was given a
southern tone which Viz seems to think is the equivalent of the her
Japanese dialect. Now, I personally first watched Ranma on the Cantonese
dubs. Shampoo spoke normally, but with a mandarin accent. So I had no
idea how others thought of her until I read my first fanfic and watched
my first viz dub. I had to change the her speach in my first fic because
I learned that if she is written any other way it would be OOC and many
wouldn't read it or take it seriously. I was not happy about that, but
that's how it is in the fanfic world. If you want people to read it,
Shampoo's baby talk is needed. I would personally read any story that
had Shampoo speaking normally though.
