BGC/WHO: Slipt, part 11.

The familiar groaning, wheezing sound which accompanied the TARDIS'
journeys through the space-time continuum ended with a reassuring *thump*.

The time machine had landed.
Ace shook her head slowly, still unable to believe the Doctor would
give up his TARDIS so easily to one so despicable as Largo. She knew he
had a plan, but still hadn't the foggiest idea of what it might be.
She had a job to do, though. With a sigh, she got to her feet,
slinging her backpack over her shoulder, and padded silently out the door
and down the corridor.

Largo opened the TARDIS doors, gazing out across the smog-shrouded
cityscape that was Megatokyo. According to the readouts, he had traveled
back to 2022, 19th April. It was precisely one week before Katsuhito
would complete the construction of his new prototype boomer, the one that
would spend over ten years in hiding, slowly climbing the ranks of Genom,
from lackey, to programmer, to executive.
It was the one who would become himself.
He could not risk tampering with events this early, but there were
still preparations to be made. Katsuhito would be allowed to complete his
prototype, but his death would of necessity follow shortly thereafter.
There would be no data unit passed on, and no possibility of the legacy of
the Knight Sabers. Katsuhito's dream would die with him.
Largo stepped outside onto a dimly lit side street of Ota district,
smiling grimly. First, he would find a public access terminal. It would
not be difficult to hack into Genom's mainframe now, not with ten years
less security measures on it. With minimal care, he could easily inject a
trojan horse into the system to cover his tracks during his strike against
the father of the Knight Sabers.
With that in mind, he disappeared into the night.

From the adjoining chamber, Ace stealthily watched Largo leave the
TARDIS.
The minutes dragged on interminably. When she was sure he was gone
and not simply waiting outside, Ace followed. Without a key, she could
not return to the TARDIS, but once the Doctor arrived that would no longer
be a problem. In the meantime, she had to find Katsuhito and warn him, if
she could.
It was drizzling. The pavement was slick and wet, as the day's
accumulated dust and grime slowly oozed from the roadway into the storm
drains, making her footing uncertain.
The night was cold and unfriendly. She shivered, pulling her coat
close about her, and peering into the darkened night. Maybe she should
have waited in the TARDIS until daybreak after all, but it was too late
for second thoughts now.
Megatokyo was a city that never slept. Even at this late hour, the
bars were still open, and there were still quite a few people on the
streets. Still, this was Ota district, and it would be safer indoors.
She began to pick her way towards the only familiar landmark she
could remember: the Hot Legs.

Deputy Todo *hated* the night beat.
He was cold, wet, and miserable. Slogging down yet another
nameless thoroughfare, trying to avoid tripping in the slime and muck
lining the walkways, while keeping a watchful eye on the passerby for any
sign of suspicious behavior... It wasn't his idea of a rewarding job.
There was the occasional bit of excitement to brighten his
day...er, night, however. Last week, he'd broken up a bar fight between
at least ten angry drunks. It was heartening to know he could still
handle himself in a brawl, and this one had ended with only a few bruises
for him, but several broken bones for his opponents.
He continued down the nearly empty street, utterly failing to cheer
himself up at all with his fondly remembered feats of prowess. Bored
nearly out of his mind, he took to lining up imagined target sights on the
few passerby who were still out at this ungodly hour.
It wasn't long before he spied a street urchin, walking slowly
down the darkened street, bent on some mischief as she eyed the shops. He
smiled greedily, and began to pace her on the opposite side of the street.
As Todo watched, she walked up and down the street three times,
seeming more and more agitated. Finally, she gave up in frustration and
sat down on the pavement, in the cold, early morning rain.
Todo frowned. Whatever she was looking for, she couldn't find it.
What would she be looking for at this time of night, though? And why,
among the middle class apartments in this neighborhood?
He crossed the street, nearly devoid of traffic, and approached the
street urchin. She looked up at him.
"Looking for something, miss?" Todo asked guardedly.
"Dunno," she muttered. "I thought for sure it was here, though."
	"What?"
She gestured vaguely at the apartments. "A bar called the Hot
Legs. I know someone who works there."
Todo blinked in confusion, frowning more deeply. "Uh, no place by
that name anywhere around here. You sure that's the name of it?"
The girl looked as if she were about to say something, then caught
herself. "Er...I dunno. That's what my friend told me it was. Maybe a
joke, you know?" She smiled weakly.
Todo nodded, not believing her story at all, but deciding it wasn't
worth pressing. "Sure. Um...you gonna be okay?"
She stood and shook her coat, shaking off the larger beads of water
that had begun to cling to it from the unrelenting drizzle. "Guess so.
Is there a hotel around here? Oh, um..." She searched her pockets
hurriedly. "Didn't I have--oh, yeah. I have 5000 yen." The girl pulled
out a crumpled bill. "Anything that cheap?"
By that time, their conversation had attracted some unwelcome
attention. Several shadowy figures were creeping down the darkened
street, giving the streetlights a wide berth. A metallic click echoed
faintly in the early morning air, and Todo saw the gleam of steel as one
of them flicked open his switchblade.
Todo froze, his hand resting inches above his gun. The girl was in
the way, but a quick motion to one side would take care of that. He was
sure that he could handle these gangers, but having the girl around could
complicate things, more than he was comfortable with.
"Get out of here!" he hissed. "Take the subway to the police
station, you'll be safe there." He edged slowly along the curb, towards a
public access booth that would help to break apart a rush if the gangers
decided to get serious.
"Not on your life," she answered quickly, with a grim edge to her
voice, and pulled a flattened disc from her backpack. "I've got me own
life insurance."
The girl gestured threateningly at the gangers, who were nearly
upon them. "Stay back, if you know what's good for you, or I'll blow you
all to kingdom come!"
"You and what army?" sneered one of them, waving his blade at her.
Suddenly, several of them broke into a run, charging at him and the girl
with blades at the ready.
"All right, you asked for it!" she yelled, and threw the disc at
their feet. "Duck!" she said as she turned and ran for the cover of a
nearby parked car.
Todo quickly followed, while the gangers scattered. When the blast
came, only one of them went flying, and didn't get up.
"Bitch!" the largest one screamed. He had a long, slimy black scar
running down the side of his face, probably from some freak accident long
ago, which gave him a ghoulish look. "You'll pay for that!"
Two of them made a grab for her before she could retrieve another
disc from her pack, but she twisted away, whacking one with the flat of
her palm on his temple. The blow landed true, and the ganger blinked
dully and collapsed in a heap.
"All right," she murmured threateningly, "who's next?"
One leapt towards Todo, ready to kick him off of his feet, but Todo
was quicker. Drawing his gun, he slammed the butt of it into the ganger's
gut as he flew by. The ganger grunted, and doubled over in pain.
Another sliced at him with his knife repeatedly, narrowly missing.
Todo didn't waste any time. Pulling the trigger, he heard a satisfying
*phut*, and suddenly the ganger's midsection vanished in a puff of smoke.
The ganger slumped to the ground, dead instantly.
Now the gangers finally *did* decide to get serious. One whipped
out a pair of nunchaku, expertly yanking the gun from Todo's hands with
its chain. Grinning wickedly, he began to twirl one handle freely, like a
flail. "Time's up, asshole. Time to die."
Ace was momentarily distracted by the latest development. Another
ganger took the opportunity to cuff her soundly across the face. She was
unconscious before she hit the pavement.
"Damn!" muttered Todo, burning with anger. This street scum was
*not* going to get the better of him. But, there was little he could do.
He was no hero.
With that in mind, Todo did the only sensible thing: he ran.

The ganger stopped twirling his nunchaku. "Heh. Fucking cops
think they own the streets." He glared at the unconscious girl. "Bring
the bitch. We've got a score to settle."

They called themselves the Perks. It wasn't necessarily a name
that meant anything. Names rarely meant anything, anyway. But, it served
to explain to the other city gangs that they had an identity.
It was short for, "We're a gang. Don't fuck with us."
The other gangs had little trouble understanding that.
Greaser was pissed. When Greaser was pissed, people got hurt.
Tonight would be no exception.
The little bitch had taken out Skinman, the newest member. He had
been good with locks, but had always been a little slow on his feet. Too
bad. He was a little dead, now.
The cop had offed Harley, the one who had treated his friends the
same way he'd treated his bike. Greased.
Greaser was the man. He kept the gang lubed, kept them together,
and found the jobs. Usually, the jobs came easy and often. Sometimes,
the jobs got harder, but nobody had ever died on a job.
Tonight was different. Tonight, somebody would seriously pay for
that.
The shacks, where they hung out, were just ahead. It was a
mismatched collection of ramshackle hovels that served to shelter them
from the elements. They weren't high class fashion statements, but the
Perks took pride in them nonetheless.
Skunk was carrying the bitch. He'd razored a stripe of hair off
the top of his head, "so I won't drag on my bike." Skunk never used a
helmet, although he wore a beat-up pair of shades constantly. Skunk was
big enough not to be bothered by the girl's extra weight.
His scar was bleeding again. That usually meant that he'd been
taking life too fast. It was clenching his jaw that did it, of course,
but he normally took that as a sign to slow down.
Not tonight. Tonight would be party time.

An hour later, after grub, they were ready to start.
The bitch was tied up in a chair in one corner of Greaser's shack,
still unconscious. He backhanded her twice, quickly remedying that.
She blinked, looking around. Her eyes finally settled on Greaser.
"What the hell do you want?" she spat.
Greaser pulled out his blade, and licked it slowly, letting the
blood run warm inside his mouth. Pain was something he'd learned to
enjoy.
	"You're crazy," said the bitch.
"Yeah," he agreed. "I like pain, you know. I think I'll like
yours even better."
