Heya, just subscribed to the list recently and have been wondering. What
would you people think about writing yourself (or any RL person) into a fic?
Too way out? Won't work?

Self-insertion fics are generally held in low esteem since they
are written for the entertainment of the author rather than any
other reader. A very few have risen above this handicap and
actually been good, but in no case were they actually better for the
self-insertion element.

I know it is hell tempting if you do write yourself into a fic that you wind
up being a God, all seeing and all powerful etc etc. Though if controlled it
may work out fine. I been thinking of a Ranma 1/2 story set about 5/6 years
after the last manga release. The world has been mostly destroyed in the
form of World War 3 (or some other great disaster). Ranma, in a bid to try
and change the future, goes back thru time via the Nanban Mirror but
accidentally winds up in our world/dimension/shithole.

>From there i guess a lot can just flow. The person(s) going into the fic
would have some abilities/powers/skills i guess perhaps as a result of
interdimensonial hopping just to let them hold their own but not to make
them a Godlike figure.

What'd ya all think? If it's a good idea i may start something like this. :)

Write what you want. But the basic premise sounds stronger than
the self-insertion element. You might be better advised to just
create a new character, to some extent based on yourself (at least
in regard to personality) with the abilities needed for the plot as
opposed to total self-insertion.
