They were aware of what the rules were, and broke them because they chose to
do so, rather than because they didn't know any better or because they were
simply lazy.

Bah.  I say Joyce broke the rules because he was drunk when he wrote and
sent the unreadable scrawl off to be typed up by a company that spoke no
English...

But then, I don't see why people consider Joyce a "great", much less an
"author".
