Chapter 1
*********

Miya Igarashi let out a strangled cry as she felt the rough brick
wall against her back. In front of her stood a menacing looking boy of
fourteen, demanding that she gave him all her money.

She spat at her classmate's face in response, which enraged him
even further. Despite the show of bravado, Miya was trying her best
not to cry in front of him.

She saw him swing his hand up in preparation for a punch, causing
her to wince and quickly close her eyes.

Feeling nothing, she opened her eyes a couple of seconds later
and was quite surprised to find the bully on the ground unconscious.
Near his feet stood a smug looking brown haired youth.

"Guess he wasn't as tough as he thought he was," her protector
muttered while holding his cheek which had been cut during the fight.

"T-thank you," Miya whispered shakily as she looked at the boys
wide-eyed. Her expression became filled with concern when she saw the
cut on the older boy's cheek. "Hey, are you okay? Your cheek..."

"Don't worry about it," the chestnut haired boy replied as the
cut on his face healed in less than a minute.

     "H-how...?"

"A special talent of mine," he shrugged while walking up the
stairs to his class. He was halfway up when he suddenly turned around
and looked her straight in the eyes. "I'm glad you're okay."

Miya, felt lost as she gazed at his hypnotic violet eyes for an
indefinable amount of time. She looked up with a hint of panic when
the boy resumed his trip back to his class. "Wait! What's your name?!"

     "Why do you want it?"

"I... I want us to become friends."

     "Don't bother..."

Miya's expression became irritated. Who did he think he was,
anyway? Sure, she was grateful that he had saved her, but that didn't
mean she was going to let him treat her like this. She was sticking
her neck out trying to be friendly, and he...

She turned her back on him with a disgusted snort, ready to stalk
stalk back to her classroom when she heard him finish the rest of his
sentence.

     "...I don't deserve it."

"What?!" she demanded, dropping her indignant attitude as she
turned to face him once again.

Before the chestnut haired boy could form a reply, a new voice
interrupted them from the top of the stairwell.

"Hey, better get to class before the bell rings."

     "Yes, sensei."

                       *        *        *

Even after the final bell had rung, Miya's mind was still the
mysterious boy she had met earlier. She looked down at her notebook in
disgust when she noticed that she had drawn his face over and over
again where she should have been taking notes.

Miya stood up and left the class, stopping brieftly at her locker
to get her shoes.

She was about to leave the front yard when she spotted a familiar
head of brown hair near the gates.

"Hey, what are you doing here?"

Her protector looked up from the manga he was reading to reply,
"I go to school here, too."

"I know that, but everyone left a long time ago."

"So what are you doing here?"

Miya's face turned a bright shade of red as she looked away. She
couldn't very well tell him that she got carried away thinking about
him, now could she?

She was saved from the embarassment when he decided to change
topics. "By the way, what's your name?"

     "I'm Miya. Miya Igarashi."

     "I'm..."

Whatever he was going to say next was cut off as a group of boys,
including the one who had harrassed her earlier stomped into view.

Miya adopted the expression of a deer caught in headlights, while
her companion let out an annoyed sigh.

"So, too chicken to face me alone, huh?" the chestnut haired boy
taunted while making clucking noises at the back of his throat.

The bully let out an enraged growl before tackling the older boy,
the rest of the guys eagerly joining what looked like was going to be
an entertaining fight.

Miya's protector ducked as two boys from opposite sides tried to
punch him on the head, the result being that they knocked each other
out instead.

He dodged another punch from a third boy, grabbing the bully by
his shirt to use him as a shield.

Pretty soon, there were only one of them left. The brown haired
boy was breathing heavily at this point, but he refused to admit
defeat.

Using his remaining strength, he let lose a punch targeted at his
adversary's solar plexus which fortunately connected.

Despite the odds, the mysterious boy managed to win. The cuts
that he had received on his face disappeared quickly like it did
earlier, but the rest of him was not in very good shape.

Miya was about to go to him when he heard a confused male voice
yell out, "What happened?!"

"Sho," the fazed boy mumbled as he tried his best to sit up. She
offered him a hand, but he ignored it, insisting that he was fine.

"Mitsuru, didn't mom tell you not to get into fights?" the
newcomer pointed out as he picked up his brother's book bag.

"Aw, forget it." He turned around and for a moment looked like he
was going to say something to the blue haired girl he had just saved
for the second time, but in the end, he just shook his head and tried
to catch up to Sho.

Miya, for her part, was too shocked to notice their departure.
She had just talked to Mitsuru Ikeda. The gang leader Mitsuru Ikeda.

He sure was different from the rumors she had heard about him. He
didn't act like a delinquent at all. She took another glance at the
pile of unconscious bodies and gulped. At least, she hoped not.

AUTHORS NOTES: Wow. A Greenwood fic that's longer than two pages. I
must be losing it. I promised myself I wouldn't write another series
until next summer, too *grumble*
