Actually, that same sort of phenomenon appears in my family.  I'm noticeably
taller than my dad when standing but when sitting in a car, his head nearly
brushes the roof while my head is nowhere close.  I believe that it has
something to do with the differing proportions of leg and torso height.  ^_^

I have a sketch which has the relative heights of most of the Ranma 1/2
characters also (it may be the same one) and it appears that Ranma-chan is
supposed to be just a bit shorter than Akane -- subject to artistic license,
of course.
