Escalation to work the person has to have some goodness in him, and 
Gendou doesn't IMSO...

On every account I second this notion. Because he is what we all are, 
human, he is fully capable of being good as well as evil. Although it 
would be nice if he and Shinji got along better.

Though it would be funny if a healed Gendou started to sing Show 
tunes or something like that...
